Chapter 208

“When would I have had the chance to do something like this?”
“Haha…”
Lacie laughed and wiped the sweat from her forehead with her sleeve. Then Aiden approached and offered her a handkerchief from his inner pocket.
“Thank you, Young Duke.”
“Don’t mention it. I’m just sorry I couldn’t be of more help.”
“Nonsense. Without your ability, we wouldn’t have found this place in the first place.”
“That’s right. Your ability is incredible. Please cherish it.”
“…Thank you. Oh, Lady Clausent, could you keep my ability a secret?”
Aiden hadn’t forgotten his brother’s and Irene’s advice to keep his ability confidential, though he had to reveal it due to the circumstances. Lacie, tightly holding the handkerchief, responded,
“I promise, on my knight’s honor.”
“Okay, I trust you.”
Irene watched the two with a proud smile. Although they had managed to block the biggest monster, they couldn’t just stay put.
“If everyone’s rested, let’s head outside.”
“Should we just leave it like this?”
Aiden asked, pulling his sword out of the monster’s hand. Irene looked at the motionless, grotesque green forearm and hand, then nodded.
“It seems motionless, so it should be fine. We need to check if the civilians have evacuated safely.”
“Alright, let’s go.”
“Yes, let’s do that.”
The trio left the half-destroyed store and ran towards the direction of the screams and roars. Lacie easily dealt with the monsters that appeared using her powers, clearing the path.
Arriving where the screams were loudest, Irene stopped and pulled out the bow wrapped around her back. She aimed an arrow at a monster that had burst from the ground, trying to grab a child’s ankle.
The arrow, designed for monsters, sliced through the wind and struck its target accurately.
Kreeeek!
With a bizarre sound, the snake-like creature vanished. Irene quickly ran over and picked up the child.
“It’s okay now.”
“H-Hiic, uwahhh… My, my younger brother is still trapped inside!”
The child pointed to a house. Irene ran towards it, holding the child. Suddenly, a monkey-like monster burst through one of the walls.
The monkey-shaped monster, covered in green fur, was a familiar sight from the past. It looked exactly like the monsters she had seen in Korea—and this was also a mystery. However, Irene first kicked the door that wouldn’t open.
“I’ll do it!”
Aiden ran up and opened the door for her. A boy who had been hiding inside ran out, and the child Irene was holding jumped from her arms.
“Philip!”
The two children trembled but looked after each other.
“Come here. Is there no one else here?”
“Yes. Our parents went to work…”
“Alright. They will be safe.”
“Okay…”
As Irene and Aiden were leading the children out, a giant aberrant creature suddenly burst from the ground.
“Dodge!”
Aiden pushed Irene and the children aside and shouted, blocking the monster with his sword. Lacie, who had been fighting other monsters, noticed late and tried to help, but using telekinesis simultaneously was quite draining.
“Young Duke! Get out of the way!”
Spotting another monster approaching Aiden, Irene shouted. She quickly drew an arrow but worried it might be too late. Then, someone rushed in swiftly.
Not one, but three people carrying clubs rushed in, striking the monster attacking Aiden.
“These things!”
The strength of these seemingly common folk was immense. Every time they moved, the ground sunk in, and walls easily crumbled.
Irene looked at the three with a peculiar gaze.
“Goodness, what brings nobility to a place like this?”
“Leave this to us and please go.”
“Right! These monsters are easy for us.”
One of the children in Irene’s arms recognized one of the three.
“Uncle Matthew!”
“What, you’re still here? Didn’t you hear the evacuation order?”
Matthew, who had rushed over, lifted the two children in Irene’s arms with one arm. He immediately acknowledged that Irene, Lacie, and Aiden were the people who saved the children.
“Thank you for saving our kids. Let’s go to the shelter together.”
Irene looked up at him and stood up. Lacie, having dealt with the monster, came over and offered her hand.
“We will lead the way and deal with the monsters. Just follow us.”
Matthew started to speak but then took a deep breath.
“Uncle, are you still hurting?”
“Ah, when have I ever been hurt?”
“But still…”
“I’m sturdy enough, no need to worry. Let’s go.”
Irene realized right away that this man was an Esper. Noticing his slightly trembling body but strong will to persevere, she immediately grabbed his arm.
“Oh? If you’re surprised, I can support…”
Matthew was speechless. A strange energy enveloped his body and wouldn’t let go. Surprised, he almost dropped the children he was holding.
