It would be comfortable to wash her face and change clothes, but she didn’t feel like doing that either.
“Franz, Franz…”
While laying on her side as she sobbed, she called out her husband’s name. Nevertheless, no one showed up to take care of her.
She was so upset that she couldn’t stand it.
“It’s because of Maria. Maria betrayed me!”
She paced around her room and grabbed her hair.
Even while she was in anguish like this, Claire would be dancing in Erich’s arms at the party, wearing the cornflower key around her neck.
She would be laughing merrily as she had taken away all that Louisa had been proud of all her life.
This shouldn’t happen. Louisa shed tears of both anger and sorrow.
Erich had been hers for the past seven years. She was always the one who stood by his side during gatherings. Even before that, at parties where her husband wasn’t in attendance, the place next to Erich was always hers.
She was House Klausener’s only lady.
“How… How can that be? How?”
Louisa cried incessantly.
She never expected Erich would treat her like this—like she’s nothing, like she’s someone he could cut off at any given moment.
As if she was a mere vassal or employee to him, like a woman he could so easily throw away.
And, she felt regretful as well.
“I shouldn’t have done this. I didn’t mean to do this!”
She just wanted to get rid of that nasty thing. It wasn’t that she didn’t know that Erich was going to get married to that woman, nor did she really think he was hers.
There were still people out there who’d wholeheartedly agree with her—if that woman had been of outstanding noble descent, grace and beauty, Lousia would not have been so resentful about this whole ordeal.
No. She was okay with being normal. If it is a marriage between families for which there was a clear reason.
If only Erich hadn’t acted so differently.
Louisa cried and suddenly came to her senses.
“No. I can’t be like this. I will get really hated for this.”
She could no longer live if she was to be hated by Erich. That was a bigger problem to Louisa more than having her key or title stripped away from her.
She wept for a while, then crawled into her bedroom, found her sedative, and poured it into her mouth.
Losing consciousness, she fell into a dark sleep.
It was only in the morning when Louisa awakened from her slumber.
Startled, she opened her eyes after noticing the presence in her living room. She had fallen asleep.
Louisa sat up. And, she stayed like that blankly for a moment.
Click.
The sound of the door opening woke her up. It was Maria who entered.
Maria put down the washbasin she had brought, went out again, and came back with a water container. And she helped Louisa up.
“Have you not slept at all? It would be better for you to wash your face and change your clothes.”
“You…”
Her voice was hoarse from all the crying she did the night before. When she barely opened her mouth in a rasping voice, Maria handed her a glass. It was filled with warm honey water.
Louisa wanted to say she didn’t need it, but she was so tired and thirsty that she had no choice but to take it and drink it.
She then said,
“How dare you show your face in front of me?”
“Then, are you going to continue to look like that? Baron Delford will be here soon.”
Louisa’s breath was caught.
Half frightened, half angry, she raised her voice.
“She’s doing what? Where’s Erich? Tell Erich to come!”
“Elder Madam.”
“Erich must come to kick me out! How dare she…!”
Maria let out a sigh.
“That won’t be possible, Elder Madam. You know that.”
She must have cried so much that her eyeballs would fall out, but tears welled up again in Louisa’s eyes.
“Yesterday Erich… treated me like that, what else does she have to say?”
“That’s not the problem. Another thing happened last night.”
“What?”
Before Maria could explain, there was someone entering from the living room.
Surprised, Louisa eventually rose to her feet and went out into the living room. About twenty women donned in similar security service uniforms poured in at once and scattered over Louisa’s bedroom, dressing room, and other private rooms.
And Claire followed suit and entered at a languid gait.
“You…”
Louisa’s mouth opened, but she couldn’t speak any more. She gasped for her breath.
She felt wronged, resentful, and sad. But she knew that it was no use for her to cry and shout now.
“Sit.”
Claire sat down on the sofa first and offered a seat. Maximilian, who entered last, stood behind her.
That meant that House Klausener’s security department, the most powerful core that obeyed only the Duke’s orders, had thus decided to follow Claire’s orders.
“Why are you here?”
Louisa looked at Claire with a weary face. Claire was neatly dressed in midday attire, her hair tied in an updo.
Louisa suddenly realized that she was still wearing the same luxurious party dress that she had been wearing the night before.
The dress itself was made from opulent fabric that she likened to a peacock’s feathers. But now that the fabric and the skirt were all crumpled, it only made her look even worse. The golden decorative chain also drooped and became tattered.
Maria was right. If she had at least washed her face and changed her clothes, she would have felt less miserable than she was now.
Even so, completely unperturbed by Louisa’s shame, Claire spoke calmly.
“I’m here to look for the drug that had been put in the congratulatory glass you gave yesterday, Elder Madam.”
“…What are you talking about?”
“You’ve devised a plan to give me drugged alcohol. Erich had blocked the attempt, but since the congratulatory drink was given in the middle of the banquet, Erich had no choice but to drink it.”
While saying that, Claire carefully examined Louisa’s reaction.
Louisa looked nervous and anxious. Perhaps it was because of her fatigue, and as if her comprehension was a little off, she couldn’t understand the meaning behind Claire’s words right away. With her head tilted to the side, she asked.
“I sent you a congratulatory drink?”
A maid named Nora came from the cellar and said that she’s there under your orders to prepare a separate drink for me.”
This incident had upset the butler as well. It was imperative that the accomplice must be found, but even if there was no accomplice, the congratulatory drink could not have been sent out the way that it had.
Claire spoke slowly and clearly.
“At the party yesterday, not just one or two people saw the congratulatory drink sent to me by you, Elder Madam. And after drinking it, Erich collapsed and has yet to regain consciousness.”
