Obviously, It's My Child - Chapter 129
“Where’s Mom?”
“She should be in the boudoir. But Miss, it might be better not to meet her for a while…”
Ignoring the caution, Iris headed straight to the boudoir.
Katya was alone in the Countess’s bedroom.
Her position was particularly delicate. Count Schneider had not confronted her with allegations of infidelity.
[I trust you.]
His eyes, saying so, were trembling in a mess.
Though he didn’t restrict her actions, Katya found it hard to believe it was trust.
Probably, deep down, the Count already harbored suspicions. His not questioning her might be because he had defended her just a short while ago.
‘He defended me when the Duke warned him, so now he doesn’t want to believe I’m at fault.’
The idea of infidelity was somewhat unfair.
She did sleep with Thomas, but only to appease him.
However, there was no way to prove it wasn’t true. Trying to prove anything might just bring out evidence of Thomas visiting the Count’s residence under another name.
‘This is a headache. Maybe I should just leave far away.’
Since the whole situation had turned sour, that might be a good choice.
If the special investigation team proved the infidelity allegations, it could negatively impact Iris.
It might be better to leave. She could announce that she was not Iris’s biological mother and then disappear. That way, Iris could marry well as the beloved daughter of the Count.
The position of Duchess Klausener was now out of reach. Settling for a match of similar status to the Schneider family might be okay.
Although it might not be as good as her own arrangements, the Count would choose a good match for his daughter.
Her only concern was what Stefan Heinz was up to.
‘Just need to confirm the news about that man.’
Katya had just finished writing a letter when there was a slight commotion outside.
Iris entered, bringing the night air with her. Despite her radiant appearance, the chilly night atmosphere lingered around her.
“Mom!”
“Iris.”
Katya was flustered.
“For the time being…”
“Mom…!”
Iris was sobbing and threw herself into her arms. Katya was confused and just embraced her.
“What’s wrong? What happened?”
“Mom, what do we do? Dad has found out.”
“Found out what?”
“That I’m a fake.”
At those words, Katya jerked her head up, scanning the surroundings. A maid was loitering in the hallway, but her face didn’t show any sign that she knew anything.
Katya naturally commanded while still holding Iris.
“You, go and prepare a wet cloth.”
“Ah, yes, Madam!”
The peering maid hastily disappeared. Katya closed the door.
Then, she wiped Iris’s cheeks with her palm and asked.
“What are you talking about? That you’re a fake? Who said such a thing?”
“I’m Mom’s biological daughter.”
“Where did you hear such a thing? Iris, have you heard rumors about Mom seeing another man? No, that’s not true. It has nothing to do with you.”
“I didn’t need to hear it to know. She was there.”
“She?”
“Lina.”
Iris whispered softly.
“That Lina, Mom. She was at the Duke’s residence. That woman had her.”
Katya gasped for air. The ‘that woman’ Iris referred to could only be Claire Delford.
“Do you remember?”
Iris hesitated for a moment, but slowly nodded. Katya took a deep breath to calm herself.
“Seeing her face brought it all back. Everything. Even the things I wish I didn’t know.”
“You…”
Holding the sobbing Iris, Katya looked into her face and asked with a trembling voice.
“Could it be, you’re the one who killed Thomas?”
“I didn’t want to, Mom. I really didn’t.”
“My goodness. Why did you do it? You should have told me, why did you? Even if you hadn’t, I would have taken care of everything…”
“I had no choice. That kind of man being my father, it’s unimaginable.”
Iris’s sobbing turned into heavy weeping.
Katya urgently gripped Iris’s shoulders. She couldn’t believe Iris would have committed the act without leaving any evidence.
“How did you know? Thomas was supposed to be hiding.”
“Stefan, he…”
Iris stuttered, not understanding why Katya was asking. Katya let out a long sigh.
“Ah! So the Empress is trying to ruin you…”
Not understanding the matter, Iris just looked at her tearfully.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. The maid had come with the wet cloth.
Katya opened the door slightly and took the cloth. She spoke briskly to the maid.
“I’ll calm Iris down and send her away. Wait here.”
“Huh? Oh, yes, Madam.”
This was a common occurrence before the infidelity suspicions, so the maid was a bit startled but didn’t suspect anything.
Katya gently wiped Iris’s face with the cloth and whispered.
“Leave everything to me and go back to your room.”
“Mom.”
Iris’s voice was filled with fear as she grabbed her sleeve.
“You don’t know anything. Not about Thomas, not about Lina.”
Katya patted Iris’s shoulder firmly.
“No matter what, cling to the Count and cry. He’s a kind man, he can’t abandon you. You are the Count’s daughter, understand?”
Iris nodded again. Tears welled up in her large eyes, but she seemed to understand what she needed to do.
Katya wiped Iris’s face once more and opened the door.
The maid was still waiting. Iris hesitated to leave and continuously looked back, but Katya coldly closed the door.
Better if the maid thought they had fought and Iris had been driven away.
