Obviously, It's My Child - Chapter 124
One of the ladies who used to stand behind Countess Pfaffenheim was now behind Viscountess Spee, giggling softly.
Countess Pfaffenheim pretended nothing happened, cleared her throat, and turned her head. Lady Schupe, with a snicker, nudged her away with a well-timed snort and secured a better position.
There were quite a few people bustling about, enjoying the view of the chapel.
“Wow… to invite someone like us, indeed, the Baron is different. To enter the Sanctus Populi Chapel in my lifetime. It feels like a dream.”
Soon, the jingling sound echoed. It was a signal that the sacred procession with the censer was entering.
Everyone sat down, and the lips were sealed in silence.
A young priest stood at the front, holding the holy symbol, while following behind, the bishop purified the central aisle, swinging the censer.
Following them were the neatly adorned young choristers. They scattered light blue and white flower petals in the central aisle, filling the chapel with their clear voices.
And then, the bride and groom entered.
“Oh, the dress is splendid. Elegant figure, too.”
Archduchess Manfred couldn’t help but marvel. Bettina nodded her head.
“I thought they looked well together even at the engagement party, but now, it’s beautiful. Regardless of other things, I like Erich’s face.”
“Bettina.”
“I didn’t say anything wrong, did I? It’s a fact that he’s handsome. Even if I don’t know about his character.”
“Bettina.”
Following Archduchess Manfred, the Archduke also called Bettina’s name, scolding her. Bettina playfully laughed.
“I said it as a compliment. Oh, not a compliment for Erich, though.”
Claire might not be a typical beauty, but there was a captivating charm that caught the gaze. She knew her appearance well, and she knew how to adorn herself with a new style.
“It’s hard to believe she was ordinary during the academy days. Seriously, I can’t understand.”
“If she was really ordinary, would Erich have noticed her?”
Archduke Victoria spoke gruffly. Lady Bettina nodded, agreeing with her statement.
The bride and groom slowly walked through the central aisle and finally stood in front of the altar.
The archbishop, who would officiate the wedding, blessed each of them.
“Today, these two stand to unite their souls as one before God. Before the ceremony, I ask, is there anyone who objects to this marriage?”
A slight tension crossed Erich’s face. Claire looked at him with confusion.
As their eyes met, an unintended smile appeared on both of their faces. Erich’s mouth subtly lifted.
Seeing the couple smiling at each other, the archbishop coughed lightly.
“If there are no objections, this marriage will be concluded in the name of God. As God created people to rely on each other, unlike birds soaring in the sky or beasts running in the mountains. From today on, whether joy or sorrow comes…”
Following the procedure, the archbishop officiated the wedding. Finally, he extended the marriage declaration written on the first page of the holy book and said,
“If you have no objections, this marriage contract, though earthly, is an eternal vow to God. It cannot be erased or torn apart. Please sign it.”
Although the words were that, when it came to divorce, the church and such would be conveniently forgotten. It was the principle of the church that such things should be forgotten when needed.
Erich signed first, and Claire signed beside him.
『Claire Delford.』
And next to it, she wrote another character that no one would recognize.
“Claire?”
Erich called her curiously and Claire only smiled faintly.
It was the signature she used in her past life. However, Claire thought it was something no one needed to know.
“With this, the marriage is official.”
The archbishop declared.
Erich took Claire’s hand, turned around, and in that spot, he pulled her hand and kissed her.
Deng…! Deng…!
The bells announcing the marriage rang vigorously.
The guests applauded in unison. The singing of the choir poured through the church, piercing the light and rising to the sky.
It truly felt like a blessing.
“Congratulations.”
“Best wishes.”
The two walked out while exchanging greetings with familiar faces.
Count Schneider, who had been sitting on one side of the church, sat there in a daze amidst the pouring congratulations.
Everything was filled with joy, but his body seemed to be collapsing to the ground.
‘That voice… that voice…?’
He attended today, but he sat alone today in the last row corner, not where Count Schneider’s family would usually sit.
It was natural to congratulate the wedding, but if his wife’s real intention was to harm Claire, how could he shamelessly show his face?
So, to fulfill his duty silently in his heart, he attended secretly.
It was unbelievable in many ways.
His wife, Katya, was a devoted woman to him. Although the reason for their marriage was to transfer the daughter, there was no way there was no affection between them after living together for 17 years.
He originally had an affectionate personality. Being a person who would return several times the affection given to him, their married life was incredibly happy. Despite the age difference in their marriage, he never once doubted that it was a wrong choice.
Even though he knew that others claimed Katya seduced him to secure the position of the Countess, he regarded it as mere gossip from people who knew nothing.
He heard rumors about his wife having an affair, meeting her former lover even after their marriage. He didn’t believe it could be true, but enduring the accusations, even from acquaintances, was too difficult.
Could it be that what Erich warned about was true? Could Katya really have tried to harm Claire? Even if it was for Iris, could she really?
Did her affair partner also take care of the matter? Why? Is that man doing it for Iris too?
