My Contract Husband is Going Crazy Because of My Iron Wall - Chapter 57.2
Chapter 57.2
A few days later, Mario received a heavy sack from the insider.
A shattered teacup nearby suggested the Duchess had been drugged and placed inside.
Mario slipped out of the residence undetected and loaded the sack containing the Duchess into his wagon. As he prepared to leave, curiosity about the Duchess, whose beauty was widely praised, overcame him. Figuring the mask concealed his identity, he untied the sack.
“…D*mn.”
A crude exclamation escaped his lips.
The rumors were true. The Duchess was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Even bound in a sack, her hair disheveled, she resembled a painting. If she looked this stunning with her eyes closed, how much more breathtaking would she be with them open?
Consumed by the desire to see her open eyes, Mario waited.
The waiting client was long forgotten.
“…Ugh.”
After a while, the Duchess stirred. Her violet eyes, framed by light brown lashes, were even more captivating than he had imagined.
“I’m thirsty…”
She murmured, still dazed.
Mario instantly fetched her water.
“Thank you… but who are you?”
She asked, clearly surprised by the kidnapper’s kindness.
Merely meeting her gaze made Mario’s heart pound. He blurted out, “I’m… I’m your kidnapper.”
“What?!”
* * *
My eyes widened in alarm.
The fog in my mind cleared, revealing my predicament: I was inside a sack in a strange wagon. I scrambled out and tried to escape, but the kidnapper banged on the wagon wall, yelling.
“Paul! Let’s go!”
‘So, there’s an accomplice.’
As the wagon lurched forward, the kidnapper bound me tightly with rope.
“Let me go!”
I shrieked.
“Please stay still. I don’t want to hurt you…”
Struggling against the ropes proved futile.
‘Calm down. If strength won’t work, I’ll use my wits.’
“Why did you kidnap me?”
“I was paid to.”
At least he was cooperative, unlike a typical kidnapper.
“Who hired you?”
“I don’t know. There are usually many intermediaries in these situations.”
“Don’t you know they eliminate loose ends to avoid future problems?”
It seemed he hadn’t considered that, seeing as his expression was now filled with panic.
“Um… well, there’s nothing I can do now. I’ll just have to finish the job and run.”
“Turn this wagon around and go back to the Erestein ducal residence. Erestein will protect you. They’ll pay you more than your client. I promise.”
“Are you trying to trick me into getting caught?”
“Do you have any idea what’s going on?”
I let out a haughty chuckle, feigning composure.
“My husband is already after you. He’s obsessed with me and always has people following me without my knowledge. You’d be wise to take my offer.”
It was a lie, of course.
Inside, I was terrified. Having just asked Reinhardt for a divorce, there was a chance he wouldn’t bother looking for me.
“Someone like that would never let me go.”
The kidnapper countered, still skeptical.
If this negotiation failed, my only option was to wait for Reinhardt to rescue me… but would he even try?
* * *
“Your Grace! It’s terrible!”
A maid, whose face Reinhardt didn’t recognize, burst into his office without knocking. He didn’t stop her. After Irovel’s divorce request, he had planted numerous maids around her, instructing them to report any sign of her attempting to leave.
He’d tasked so many that it wasn’t surprising he didn’t recognize them all.
“What is it?”
“The Duchess has run away!”
He had hoped she wouldn’t leave without a word just because he refused the divorce, but she had. Reinhardt felt his heart plummet, running a hand over his face.
