My Contract Husband is Going Crazy Because of My Iron Wall - Chapter 54.2
Chapter 54.2
‘It seems only Amil and I can see it, so it’s probably invisible to human eyes… but why?’
“Why is that light converging on Empress Roxanne, who’s just sitting there? Isn’t that suspicious?”
I agreed. The light focusing on Roxanne, coupled with her previous interrogation of me, made her incredibly suspicious.
“Stars of the Empire, prove that you aren’t the fruit of sin! Prove your right to judge the sinner!”
One by one, the concubines, known as the ‘Stars of the Empire,’ passed through the Gate of Judgment. With each one that crossed, the light surrounding Roxanne grew brighter, even though their hair color remained unchanged.
“I always wondered why His Majesty kept taking concubines as if it were a hobby… Now I understand.”
Amil glared at Roxanne, a sneer twisting his lips.
“I don’t know what that light is, but seeing it grow stronger with each person who passes through the gate, it seems Empress Roxanne needs a lot of it.”
* * *
I was standing in a fog-filled sky.
‘What? How am I standing in the sky? Oh, I see. I must be dreaming again.’
Rumble… Boom!
Torrential rain poured down, drenching the earth. Then, Roxanne, with a face as pale as the moon, appeared before a young boy.
“You are….”
The boy, facing Roxanne with an incredulous expression, knelt and bowed his head.
“Larboris, at your service. I pledge my eternal loyalty.”
…Larboris? The Larboris I know?
‘Ah, right. Larboris has the ability to shapeshift into any creature he desires.’
“P-pledge my loyarty!”
“Me too!”
“Good. My servants. I accept your loyalty and shall give you your first command.”
Roxanne looked down at Larboris and the squishies with a satisfied expression, then continued,
“Kill Reinhardt Erestein.”
“That’s….”
Larboris hesitated, his voice trailing off. The squishies began to tremble, their gelatinous bodies quivering.
“We cannot obey that command.”
“You pledged your loyalty to me.”
“But that human is currently outside the barrier. I’m still young and cannot breach it.”
“So, you’re saying you could breach the barrier once you reach maturity?”
“Yes. That is correct.”
“And once you mature, you could kill Reinhardt Erestein without any problems?”
“No. The Demon King wouldn’t approve.”
At the mention of the ‘Demon King,’ the smile vanished from Roxanne’s face.
“Is that so?”
She asked, her voice flat and emotionless, like a doll.
Then, she commanded Larboris again.
“Do as I say, whether Belloa wants it or not.”
A red aura began to envelop her. The light faded from Larboris’s eyes.
“Yes.”
“No, brother! Irovel will be sad!”
“Right! Irovel will cry!”
“Shut up, you brats.”
A blast of red energy erupted from Roxanne’s hand, striking the squishies. She smiled sweetly, as pale as the moon, as she looked down at their bisected bodies.
* * *
“No!! Gasp….”
I woke up, gasping for breath.
‘How was Roxanne with Larboris and the squishies? How did they get past the barrier? And why were they obeying her?’
Could Roxanne be a half-demon like me and able to cross the barrier? However, if she were a half-demon, her true nature would have been revealed during the mana examination before she became Empress…
‘Whatever the reason, I need to go to the North and protect the squishies as soon as possible.’
Fortunately, I was already on my way to the North with Reinhardt.
“Wife, what’s wrong?”
Reinhardt, awakened by my cry, approached me.
“In my dream… Empress Roxanne used some unknown power to command Larboris to kill you, and then she killed the squishies.”
“…Do you think it was a premonition?”
“I’m not sure, but if it was, we need to stop Empress Roxanne immediately.”
“I’ll give the order to depart at once.”
Reinhardt left the tent and woke the soldiers. We were quickly ready to leave, and thanks to our relentless pace, we reached Tahita in no time.
“Reinhardt, I think I need to go alone this time.”
As I prepared to secretly cross the barrier, I remembered Roxanne’s words from my dream.
“…Kill Reinhardt Ehrenstein.”
I relayed this to Reinhardt, and he responded with unusual firmness.
“Absolutely not. You might have been safe with the smaller Tatars, but the larger ones tried to attack you.”
“Larboris and the squishies will protect me.”
“The squishies are too weak to protect you from the larger Tatars, and Larboris seemed too young. It’s safer for me to protect you.”
“But… Empress Roxanne ordered Larboris to kill you.”
At my worried words, Reinhardt sighed softly.
“Wife, do I look like someone who can be killed against my will?”
I shook my head, my gaze lingering on Reinhardt’s strong arms and shoulders.
“No… but Larboris is a High Tartar, his magic nearly on par with a demon. Even Reinhardt, you might not be able to defeat him.”
“Which is precisely why I can’t allow you to meet him alone. If you truly fear for my safety, then call off the meeting with the Tartars.”
“I can’t do that. I can’t stand by knowing the Empress will slaughter the squishies.”
“And I can’t stand by knowing you’ll be walking into danger alone.”
Reinhardt stood firm, his resolve unwavering.
‘I should have just left.’
I thought as regret washed over me. He would never let me go alone, not with his personality.
‘What should I do? Should I just run off now and go by myself?’
“Wife.”
His voice, low and deep, pulled me from my thoughts. His gaze was intense as he suddenly drew me close, one arm around my waist, the other around my neck, and pressed his lips to mine.
