Marriage with a Suspiciously Demure Husband - Chapter 99.2
Chapter 99.2
“Is it…the demons again?”
“Perhaps.”
“I’ll come with you.”
Kairos gently placed his hand on my back.
“I can’t ruin your first banquet. I’ll just assess the situation. I’ll be back shortly.”
“…Alright.”
I watched his retreating figure.
‘I hope they’re not too close.’
Even though he had mentioned inspecting the perimeter before the banquet, just in case, I couldn’t help but worry.
‘He’ll likely resolve it quickly, as always, but what if there are many followers, like last time?’
I took another sip of juice to mask my unease.
“Thank you for hosting this banquet, Duchess.”
“Oh? Ah.”
Turning, I found the captivating young lord standing before me.
‘When did he get here?’
* * *
“The attacks occurred simultaneously from all directions. As if coordinated.”
Sid reported, Kairos’s brow furrowing at the news.
“And the situation now?”
“It’s under control, though the sheer number of lesser monsters is proving somewhat troublesome. However, their simultaneous appearance and subsequent disappearance is concerning.”
“Keep me updated throughout the banquet.”
“Yes, Your Grace. We’ll ensure they don’t come anywhere near the castle.”
Not satisfied with the report alone, Kairos personally inspected the area to confirm everything was secure before returning to the banquet hall. He stopped abruptly, his gaze fixed on the young man standing close to Hazel.
‘So it’s him. The one who caught Hazel’s eye earlier.’
“Ah, yes.”
He was about to stride over and throttle the young man, but Hazel’s radiant smile stopped him in his tracks.
‘What are they talking about that’s making her smile so beautifully?’
“Yes, I truly admire you. It’s an honor to meet you in person.”
“There will be plenty of opportunities in the future.”
“May I truly look forward to that?”
‘What is that whelp saying? Look forward to what? Plenty of opportunities?’
They exchanged a few more words.
“…Truly beautiful…”
‘That dried-up stalk of wheat dares to utter such words, practically a confession, in front of Hazel.’
Hazel’s face brightened further, a touch of shyness coloring her cheeks.
‘She hasn’t smiled at me that brightly recently. What’s so special about that young fool that she’s reacting this way? He’s clearly not her type, but her unusual response is making my mouth go dry. Normally, I wouldn’t care.’
The precarious one-year timeframe he’d managed to secure was affecting him. The anxieties he’d suppressed were now surging like a tidal wave.
Instead of approaching Hazel, Kairos turned towards the exit.
* * *
“Hazel.”
“Oh, you’re back? How is the situation outside? I was getting worried and waiting…”
‘Huh?’ I scanned Kairos from head to toe.
“There were no issues outside. I’ve instructed them to be extra vigilant, so you needn’t worry.”
“That’s a relief. But Kairos, your hair…”
I distinctly remembered his forehead being clear a moment ago.
‘When did his bangs…come down?’
And his dark attire had been replaced by a dazzling white uniform.
‘Did he change because his clothes got dirty dealing with the demons? But I don’t recall him ever wearing anything this ornate. Though, he manages to pull it off remarkably well, as always. This man could probably wear a burlap sack and still look magnificent.’
“…You say there were no problems outside, but your expression suggests otherwise.”
Kairos tilted his head and offered a strained smile.
“No, there weren’t.”
“I, I see.” I averted my gaze as Kairos moved to stand impossibly close.
“Why, why are you so close? Move back a little.”
‘This is dangerous, incredibly dangerous. This is outright seduction.’
I decided to change the subject to distract myself.
“Oh, right. Guess who I was talking to just now? After you left, a young lord approached me.”
“…Who?”
“He was quite handsome. He greeted me, and we chatted. He was a charming conversationalist. I enjoyed our talk. It was…”
I turned to point out the young lord, but a hand cupped my cheek, gently turning my head back. I was pulled closer, practically pressed against Kairos, his expression now undeniably stormy.
“Do you like him?”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“Do you like that young whelp?”
