I Unintentionally Cured the Grand Duke’s Insomnia - Chapter 74
37. — Million Black (2)
I swallowed dryly as I watched Million speak to Cain with a big grin on his face.
Something was obviously wrong, and it had been wrong for a long time. I couldn’t figure out where the author had gotten the impression that this man had a fragile personality and was a disappointment to the Marquis… or was Marquis Black a stronger character than this?
As I was dozing off while drawing images of the Marquis I hadn’t even met yet, I lifted my gaze to see Cain while the atmosphere somehow got colder. His face was cold enough to suggest that if he’d been wearing a sword, he might have tried to separate Million’s neck from his torso. As an extra, I felt like I was going to die right away because of the gravity that flowed between the two of them, like shrimp in between in a whale fight.
In the end, I gingerly grabbed the hem of Cain’s robe, unable to hold on to the heavy air that seemed to be suffocating me.
‘…Please calm down.’
This wasn’t the foot of a mountain where no one went, nor was this the residence of Duke Destro. Couldn’t they see the dozens or hundreds of eyes that have been watching us for a while now?
Still, it seemed that the effect of sending telepathy without blinking once worked.
It was because a shallow sigh that escaped Cain’s lips felt like he understood. The answering sigh that came out of him made me smile as I straightened my shoulders, which had been slumped from the tension.
I was about to take a breather when Million suddenly parted his lips with an ‘Ah’ sound.
“Ah, my father sends his regards to the Grand Duke.”
“….”
“Are you sleeping well these days?”
What did he mean, sleeping?
What…? Did Marquis Black know about Cain’s insomnia? The secret that only the people of the Grand Duchy and Irene knew about in the story?
Cain’s face stiffened as he saw the smile on Million’s face. He then smiled at me and uttered in a lowered voice in response to the question.
“I didn’t think the Marquis would be so concerned about my bed.”
“There’s a strange rumor going around in Aren, isn’t there?”
“….”
“The rumor that the mad Grand Duke is suffering from insomnia, haunted by the ghost of his brother who died in his place on the battlefield.”
“A ghost?”
Million’s gaze, which was directed at Cain, shifted to me.
He seemed to take offense at my interruption, cutting him off. Nonetheless, I continued my words while facing Millions’ gaze as he stared at me with his eyebrows narrowed.
“If his brother appears in his dreams, why is it a ghost?”
“I don’t think it was something I said to the Young Lady.”
“I didn’t want to get involved in this conversation either. However, even if I didn’t want to intervene, the Lord has been saying too much for a while now.”
There was only one reason why I, who had been holding my breath to somehow avoid getting caught between them, suddenly intervened. It was because I was upset by Million’s remarks, that were more excessive than I thought.
“Say… what does the Lord, who didn’t even participate in the war, know what the relationship between His Highness* and Lord Abel was like or what happened in the war?”
[ T/N: I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this before, but the author referred to Cain as ‘His Highness (전하와)’ even though his title is the grand duke. Normally, it would’ve been ‘his excellency’ though I’ll stick with what the author used, so I hope there’s no confusion! ]
“Young Lady Adelia.”
When I put strength in my eyes that met Million’s gaze, the corners of his mouth twitched up.
“If you talk about it because I didn’t participate in the war, isn’t that the same for Young Lady Adelia?”
“That’s right, so I don’t even talk about it because I don’t know what happened there or what happened to the two of them.”
“….”
“But what does Lord Black know about that you could share the words of Lord Abel to His Highness?”
Yes, I knew what I was saying.
I knew how much Cain went through in that war and what kind of pain he had to live through because of it.
“His Highness is sleeping soundly, so you don’t need to worry about it.”
“His Highness is sleeping well?”
“Yes, I put him to sleep every night…”
…Oh, I’ve made a mistake.
It was because I was infuriated by Million’s sarcastic tone. I shut my eyes tightly as I realized the mistake I’d made at the sound of the commotion around me.
My mouth… this despicable mouth!
“I-I don’t mean that I’m putting him to bed strangely…!”
“To the point where I look forward to every night.”
…Huh?
My eyes widened as I stared at Cain, who had suddenly interrupted our conversation. Meanwhile, he smiled leisurely at Million as if he couldn’t feel my gaze.
“So, I guess you wouldn’t have to worry about my bed in the future anymore, Lord.”
“….”
“I hope you tell the Marquis that as well.”
After greeting Million with his eyes, instead of saying anything, he then gazed down at me before smiling mischievously at my bewildered face.
“Can I ask you a favor tonight, Lia?”
“…Yes?”
“I don’t think I can sleep because I’m looking forward to it already.”
Those who heard Cain’s words sucked in their breath, and from one side of the room came the squeaky screams of women.
I’m doomed…
It seemed that this life, too, was completely ruined.
