78. — What Remains After the Choice (2)

If there was one problem, it was that Lyle and Irene, who had been listening to me, had also fallen asleep. Seeing the two of them still fast asleep, I steeled myself once more.

“First, let’s try to get as far from the castle as we can. You’ve got this, Adelia Blaise!”

The truth was, it wasn’t about whether I could do it. I had no other choice. Even though I didn’t know why, the lord had turned against us and threatened our lives. In such a situation, it was impossible to tell which of the guards stationed at the castle were actually on our side.

So, I frantically started reciting the contents of the book to all the approaching guards. One by one, they collapsed like leaves falling in the autumn breeze.

I ran the back of my hand over the makeshift bandage around my neck, hastily tied with a torn curtain.

Maybe because I had pushed myself so hard, the cloth was still stained with blood.

“…Let’s take one more step before we fall.”

The constant bleeding was now making my vision blur.

I pushed myself up from the ground, leaning against the wall for support. The eerily quiet hallway filled me with fear once more.

I rushed to help Irene up, but once again, I collapsed forward.

It seemed like this was beyond my limits.

Maybe I should just hide in an empty room instead? Cain and Abel might come searching for us, and if Lyle wakes up, we might stand a chance.

At that thought, I propped Irene back against the wall and was about to stand up when, suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway. The footsteps soon grew louder, confirming that what I had heard wasn’t just my imagination.

Someone was coming closer.

I stood in front of the two of them, still sound asleep, and went over the contents of the original story in my mind.

“Cain Destro. He’s the empire’s, Lian’s only… Alright.”

As the sound drew nearer, it felt like my heart was about to jump right out of my chest.

I felt nauseous from the tension as I stared at the corner.

“Cain Destro. He’s the empire’s, Lian’s…”

I stopped reciting the first line of the book I had been murmuring and biting my lip hard as I saw Cain, his face drained of color, turn the corner.

“…Cain.”

The moment his name left my lips, a wave of relief and sadness washed over me. As soon as our eyes met, Cain rushed toward me without hesitation and embraced me.

His body, holding me, was trembling.

Seeing Cain, who seemed to be more afraid than I was, I let out a soft laugh and patted his back.

“I told you I wouldn’t die…”

“Lia!”

As the tension lifted, everything in front of me went dark.

Irene, her face drained of color, ran down the hallway with Noya, who had come to get her.

She had just been facing Jackson, who had taken Lia hostage, yet she couldn’t understand why she had been sleeping so peacefully. Before all of this unfolded, she had been teaching Noya how to use his holy power. That was when a lark flew in through the window.

The lark was actually Lyle.

It was only after hearing from him that Irene realized Lia was in danger, along with the realization that they, too, might be at risk. Just as she had suspected, the lord was a suspicious figure. He had threatened Lia and, in the end, even held a knife to her throat. Faced with the dire situation, her mind went completely blank, and she couldn’t think of anything.

That was when it happened.

Despite bleeding profusely, Lia was the first to speak.

〈 It seems like today might be the end of my life, but could you pass a message to His Highness the Grand Duke, Lord Jackson? 〉

Lia looked tense, but her voice didn’t shake at all. Her calm demeanor was truly remarkable.

Irene, on the other hand, couldn’t bring herself to say anything to Andre, who was mocking her. The mockery was the truth. Until the moment Lia died before her eyes, she wouldn’t have been able to save either of them.

Finally reaching her destination, Irene threw open the door.

She stepped forward and spoke as she looked at Cain, who was holding Lia’s hand tightly as she lay in bed.

“I’ll do it. I can do it.”

“I’ve already called the doctor. You don’t need to step in.”

“Your Highness the Grand Duke!”

“I’m saying you can’t heal her.”

Irene frowned at Cain’s words.

There was no one in the world she couldn’t save.

…Unless they had used black magic, or been a victim of it.

As Cain turned his gaze away from her, Irene’s voice grew louder.

“There’s no one I can’t heal, unless they’ve used black magic or been affected by it…”

At that moment, she caught sight of Lia’s snow-white hair. More specifically, it was her hair, which was now beginning to show a hint of pink.

Irene balled her fist as she watched Cain avert his gaze from her.

She had heard from Noya that Lia had collapsed like that because, even while bleeding, she had protected both Irene and Lyle with her fragile body.

“…Your Highness the Grand Duke.”

“….”

“I may not be able to decide who lives, but if I have to choose between myself and someone else, I can make that choice.”

“…What?”

“I’ll choose Lia.”

Irene moved around the bed and stepped closer to Lia, who lay unconscious. The cloth wrapped around her wound was soaked in blood.

If she used divine power to forcibly save a corrupted soul, she might incur the wrath of the gods.

…Even if it meant that Saintess Irene Rochere would disappear from this world.

She wanted to save Lia.

Divine power, filled with her desperation, began to flow from her hands.
