I Unintentionally Cured the Grand Duke’s Insomnia - Chapter 111
56. — Mountain of Sacrifices (1)
Million, entering the Marquis’s mansion, furrowed his brows when he felt the disarray in the house. Upon entering, the maids, who were whispering amongst themselves and cleaning something off the floor, were startled and quickly rose from their floor.
“You, you’ve arrived, Young Lord.”
Their attempts to straighten their disheveled clothing and hide the rags behind their backs definitely seemed suspicious. Nodding curtly at the maids, his eyes fell on the bucket set beside them.
The water in the buckets had a blackish-red hue.
When he saw the servants’ reddened eyes, as if they had been crying, and the blood-like liquid in the buckets, he realized what had transpired in the mansion while he had been away for a moment.
He turned to his maids and asked.
“Where is Evelyn?”
“She’s in her room.”
Million smiled at the maid who gave the answer, then took the first step forward.
As he passed by the maids and ascended the stairs, he could hear murmurs once again coming from below. It made him feel rather dirty to watch people say things behind someone’s back when they couldn’t say it upfront.
“…Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to take advantage of this opportunity to clean everything.”
Muttering to himself, he reached the third floor and glanced down the end of the hallway where Evelyn’s room was. In the quiet hallway, devoid of any signs of activity, Million sighed softly and started walking towards her room. He stood before the old, large door before raising his hand to knock, but the room remained deadly silent.
With a slight furrow of his brow, Million entered the room without hesitation.
“Evel—”
Clang.
The moment he stepped into the room, a glass flew terrifyingly close past his face.
As the shattered glass hit the wall, a shard grazed Million’s cheek. With a stinging sensation, something trickled down his cheek. When he raised his hand to wipe his face, he noticed the clear blood staining his palm.
“It’s a shame. I wanted to blow your head off.”
A sneering voice accompanied by a caustic tone echoed.
After roughly wiping away the blood trickling down his cheek, Million smiled as he met Evelyn’s piercing jet-black eyes.
“Why are you so angry again today, Evelyn?”
“Ha, why am I so angry again?”
“….”
“Why don’t you stop acting like you don’t know and get your filthy face out of my room?”
“I’m still your brother, so don’t you think you should speak a little nicer?”
The corners of Evelin’s mouth twisted upward, just as her head was tilted crookedly. A tone so bitter that it was difficult to believe that it came from such a pretty mouth flew towards him.
“Didn’t I tell you last time? Don’t go around calling yourself my brother.”
Evelyn stepped forward with long strides and came right in front of him, her eyes shining fiercely. Still, Million looked at her with an indifferent smile.
“That’s an interesting thing to say. Don’t call me your brother.”
“That’s only when you’re really Million Black.”
[ T/N: OMG THEY KNOW TOO?? Σ(°ロ°) ]
“What do you mean, Evelyn? If I’m not Million Black, then who am I?”
Million was relaxed, even as he watched her narrow her eyes at him. Evelyn chuckled sarcastically as she looked at the man in front of her as if he was trying to soothe a child.
“You don’t really think father and I think you’re the real Million Black, do you?”
“….”
“Regardless of what you are, to us, you’re merely a byproduct of black magic failing.”
Her words, sharp as a razor, flew towards him.
Million let out a shallow laugh at her mocking words and lowered his head towards her. Evelyn’s face contorted as they got so close that the bridge of their noses brushed.
“Yes, maybe you’re right. Perhaps I’m just a byproduct of black magic failing.”
“….”
“But you know, Evelyn.”
“Don’t call my name…!”
“How does it feel to be driven to this alcove by that byproduct?”
Evelyn’s eyes were filled with venom at Million’s smiling question.
As she looked at him, fiddling with the ring on his finger, she realized that the obsidian ornament, which had been jet black just a few days ago, had now turned as transparent as glass. The fact that the obsidian’s color had turned white meant that he had used the power of the ring.
Using a ring containing the vitality of ten people for personal purposes.
He looked at Evelin, whose expression hardened, and added.
“Poor Evelyn, your father doesn’t care about how great you are.”
“….”
“The only important thing is that you’re not a man. So, I suppose father gave me this ring and brought in a child from some unknown lineage, hoping to continue his legacy through someone else.”
His whispering words brought to her mind a memory of one of the family members who had recently gone to see her father. The child, who seemed about two or three years younger than her, was still too young and foolish to understand the weight of being the head of the family.
No, perhaps it was because he was foolish that he caught her father’s eye.
