Chapter 126

“Heyna. Are you alright? You look a little drunk.”

“Huh? No. I didn’t drink.”

Rose approached with a puzzled look and sniffed the air.

“Hmm? You’re right. I don’t smell alcohol… Then why is your face suddenly so red?”

“…Is my face red?”

“Yes. Both your cheeks are red, like you’ve been drinking.”

I brought my hands to my cheeks. I couldn’t see myself without a mirror, but the heat radiating from my skin told me everything. My cheeks were flushed, just as Rose had said.

I wasn’t like this in front of Dekir earlier, was I? Just a few glances at Dekir had made my cheeks burn like this… The thought of what my face must have looked like when he told me he loved me made my mind go blank. I was so embarrassed I wanted to hide in a hole.

“Oh my. You’re even redder than before! If you haven’t been drinking… do you have a fever?”

Is my face really that red? Rose’s eyes held genuine concern, thinking I was truly unwell.

“No, Rose. I’m fine.”

“Fine, my foot! If you’re not feeling well, don’t force yourself to stand. Sit down and have some water.”

Rose fussed over me, handing me a glass of water. After gulping down the cool water, I felt the heat in my face subside.

“Oh? The redness is fading now. That’s a relief.”

I gave Rose a weak smile in response to her worried gaze. “Thank you for your concern. I’m not sick, so you don’t have to worry. My face was red because… I guess I was a little warm.”

“It’s not that hot… You must run hot, Heyna.” Rose giggled, covering her mouth. It seemed her wariness had completely disappeared during our conversation.

I had succeeded in lowering Rose’s guard, but what should I do now? To wake Rose, I had to tell her that this was all a dream. But even if she knew, would she willingly wake up? If it’s the Rose I know… She’ll definitely try to run away again.

Lost in thought, I decided to continue the conversation with Rose. I might find a clue to wake her up.

“Rose, why are you here all alone?”

“…Uh, huh?”

The bright smile in her blue eyes wavered. Her lips, which had been moving freely just moments before, opened and closed repeatedly before clamping shut.

With a darkened expression, Rose ran a hand roughly through her hair. “I was just taking a break. I’m tired from dancing so much.”

I hadn’t seen Rose while I was dancing with Dekir. It could have simply been that our paths didn’t cross, but… The tremor in Rose’s voice and her flickering eyes told me she was lying.

“Didn’t you have anyone to dance with?”

“…What? What are you talking about! You think I, I didn’t get asked to dance?”

Hitting a nerve, Rose’s voice rose in agitation.

“No, I didn’t say you didn’t get asked. I just asked if there wasn’t anyone you wanted to dance with….”

Rose’s face fell at my words. I didn’t miss the opportunity.

“Rose, don’t tell me you really didn’t get asked to dance?”

“….”

Her blue eyes flickered uncertainly. After a long pause, Rose blurted out, as if chased.

“I’m Rose Liverton! Everyone is dying to even speak with me. I was alone because I wanted to be, not because no one approached me!”

She was so terrible at lying.

“So, you were alone because no one approached you, right?”

“…No!”

Rose shrieked, unable to contain her frustration, then stomped her foot in anger.

“If you’re going to keep picking a fight, just go away! I don’t have time for someone as annoying as you.”

Looking at her tear-filled eyes, whether from anger or sadness, I remembered the first time I saw Rose here. Rose, boasting about her dress. The people around her were all putting on a facade, flattering her.

The more they did, the more Rose acted as if she were truly someone special. But the Rose I’d seen so far was different. Rose was a kind person who cared about others.

Just now, she had been worried about my flushed face and even brought me water. She can be selfish and thoughtless at times… but Rose isn’t a self-centered person.

But the ghost in Rose’s form had said that no one liked the selfish, troublesome Rose. Everyone wanted her to disappear. This was Rose’s dream. A dream born from her desire to laugh and mingle with the other noblewomen in a splendid ballroom.

And the ghosts I’d encountered, bearing Rose’s likeness, were probably… Nightmares created from the dark insecurities within Rose’s heart.

Deep down, Rose must have felt insecure, fearing that no one truly liked her. Was that why she didn’t want to wake up from this dream? Afraid that, like now, a wallflower in a magnificent ballroom, everyone would turn their backs on her.

Then, the way to wake Rose was simple.

“Rose.”

“….”

“Honestly, that dress isn’t very pretty.”
