While making plans for contingencies, Weathering’s face kept coming into my view, so I eventually turned back. The truth was, I had been trying to clear my mind to avoid facing the fact that Weathering was dying.

Watching someone close to you die feels different from witnessing the death of a stranger.

Thud, thud, thud.

Even after taking deep breaths, the sound of my heartbeat didn’t subside.

“Eu, el…”

“Weathering?”

I turned at the murmured sound, but Weathering was still unconscious.

“Hold my hand.”

After a brief hesitation, the female high-ranking wizard urged me.

“Hurry! And keep talking to him. It will help bring him back to consciousness.”

“Weathering.”

He looked quite fragile without his glasses, something rare for him. His eyes were dark under the sockets, likely from staying up for days on end.

The skin of his hand was rougher than I expected, and calluses were visible on the tips of his fingers.

“Oh, Weathering. Did you get some of the reagent on your hands while you were working? There are spots of different colors here.”

I awkwardly spoke and my voice lingered in the otherwise silent room.

“Once this war is over, you’ll receive a great reward. That should take care of any future research funding worries.”

It would have been easier if no one else were around. But with the high-ranking wizard treating him, and the Chancellor and attending wizard standing by, I couldn’t help but feel nervous.

“Cough.”

Weathering suddenly coughed up a mouthful of dark blood, and the wizard beside him quickly supported his upper body, lifting him to prevent the blood from going down his airway.

My heart began to race.

“Ah, I shouldn’t be acting so unfamiliar. You treated me the same way even after three years, without a care in the world.”

I clenched his limp hand tightly.

“I was surprised by your dancing skills. I’m terrible at it myself and often end up stepping on people’s feet, but now that I think about it… Ah, you’ve never stepped on my feet.”

The hand I held was cold.

“Hmm, you always surprise me in unexpected ways.”

Naturally, there was silence in response, but I kept talking.

“If you just hold on a little longer, you’ll be able to do what you want. You said you wanted to go to Britis, right? We’re just one step away.”

Not even a single eyelash moved.

I was unsure if he was still breathing, so I lightly placed my hand under his nose. There was a faint breath, barely perceptible, as if he could stop at any moment.

“If you don’t open your eyes, I’ll call for Carin. She’ll talk non-stop to you. Or, maybe she’ll be so emotional she won’t be able to say a word.”

I felt sorry for Carin, but knowing Weathering despised her, I thought there would be some reaction, but there was none at all.

I felt a sense of weakness, like I had lost my last support.

“Weathering.”

His pale and slightly cracked lips trembled slightly.

“You foolish, dumb wizard. You said scholars were more impressive, right? Hmph, from now on, I’ll call you wizard. Wizard, wizard, wizard.”

In the meantime, the high-ranking wizard finished her treatment. I heard her quietly mutter, “Now it’s entirely up to Weathering’s will.”

It sounded as though she was implying Weathering might die soon.

The wizard left the room for a moment.

Weathering’s face was still pale, and without worrying about who might be around, I threw out words that might provoke him into getting up from his shock.

“Don’t die. Don’t die, Weathering, you idiot. You’re not planning to give up on life just because I turned you down, are you?”

It felt wrong to see anyone dying, but it was even more for Weathering lying there helplessly.

He was someone who belonged in a lab. If he had collapsed from overwork, I might have understood, but this situation was unacceptable.

“Try it, and I’ll never forgive you for the rest of my life.”

His pale face hadn’t changed, and I grew frightened, wondering if he was going to die right there.

“I’m telling you not to die!”

I gripped his large hand tightly with both of mine, but his long fingers were still limp, and it bothered me somehow.

Someone else would be worried sick, but he seemed to be resting so leisurely, like he was planning to spend his whole life like this.

“Weathering Blest, wake up!”

“Well, Lady Hardland. Just a moment.”

The Chancellor, who had not left, called me, and I heard a strained voice.

“Euel.”

“…Weathering?”

“Huh.”

“Weathering!”

When I grabbed his shoulder, he flinched.

“Could you be gentler? You’ve got quite a bit of strength right now that you’re very tense, Euel.”

Oh.

I cautiously released my grip, and Weathering asked for water. I helped him sit up and drink.

“It’s nice that you’re so rattled because of me.”

“Ah…!”

He smiled more openly than usual. But soon, I grabbed a tender spot on his body and furrowed his brows.

“This person, he’s alright, right?”

“We’ve treated the external and urgent wounds, and most of the internal injuries have healed. However, he must refrain from vigorous movements and needs rest.”

“Will the healing priest’s treatment be effective?”

“Yes, the priest’s treatment will be effective now.”

However, since we couldn’t bring a priest into the Magic Tower, I asked a nearby knight to move Weathering.

The knight brought a makeshift bed, but Weathering didn’t seem to like the idea of lying on it.

“I can walk on my own.”

“If you don’t listen, I’ll use magic to float you in the air.”

At my threat, Weathering silently lay down on the makeshift bed carried by two knights.

With the chief attendant’s help, I had Weathering rest in the annex.

“Euel.”

“Yes?”

Despite looking exhausted, Weathering was reluctant to rest.

“Take me to the fairy realm.”

“Suddenly?”
