I Don't Need the Grand Duke's Regret - Chapter 82
Giving birth was not easy.
Even with Asil, the Magic Tower Master, practically pouring magic into the process, it took a whole day to deliver Charles. Mirabel couldn’t even count how many times she had passed out during it.
If she hadn’t been Mirabel but Armilla, Charles might not have been born at all. It was only with the generous help from those around her that she was able to give birth.
The world that was so cruel to a stranger like Armilla was kind and warm to Princess Mirabel.
Mirabel found this both fortunate and at times, bittersweet.
“At least you both weren’t hurt.”
Sophie, after handing Charles to the nanny, carefully placed a pin on Mirabel’s hair. The diamond hairpin matched Mirabel’s golden hair. She smiled gently after finishing.
“You look so beautiful. Who would look at the princess and believe you’ve just had a baby?”
Sophie glanced at Charles being fed in the nanny’s arms and whispered softly.
“Have you considered looking for a suitor now?”
“I’ve told you, I have no plans to marry.”
“It’s just such a waste.”
Sophie shrugged and sighed. It was a shame that the princess, who was called the flower of Segolinde, was living secluded in the inner palace, away from everyone’s sight.
As she recovered her health, her beauty was returning more each day, making her absence felt even more keenly.
The now-healthy Mirabel was becoming more beautiful than when she left Segolinde. If she sparkled with pure brightness before, now her eyes held a depth that captivated anyone who looked into them.
“All they wanted was for me to get better.”
Mirabel smiled warmly at Sophie and gracefully adjusted the pin in her hair. Her serene and composed actions made her seem like a different person from the one who had collapsed in the Tara forest.
Back then, she was like a wounded bird, constantly on guard of her surroundings.
Recalling the miraculous day of their reunion, Sophie sighed and replied.
“Now that you’re better. If marriage is too daunting, how about dating?”
“Shh, stop. Charles listens.”
Mirabel cut off Sophie’s suggestion and turned her gaze to Charles. She smiled softly at her son.
“I just need Charles.”
“Still, though.”
“I’m truly fine…”
“Mirabel.”
Mirabel’s blue eyes, which had been conversing with Sophie, shifted towards the doorway. She stood up stiffened as she noticed someone enter with a trail of ladies-in-waiting.
“Mother.”
The king made a graceful gesture with her chin as her gaze met her daughters. Upon her entrance, everyone in the room stood up to pay their respects to the king.
“Greetings, Your Majesty.”
“I need to speak with Mirabel.”
With just those words, Sophie and the others quickly left the room, including the nanny caring for Charles. Left alone, Mirabel faced her mother with a confused face.
Ophelie Etienette, the King of Segolinde.
She ascended the throne at fifteen and has since maintained Segolinde’s era of peace and prosperity.
Ophelie’s judgment was always precise and wise. Without her, Segolinde would have fallen to the empire long ago.
Under her reign, Segolinde enjoyed peace. That was why the citizens revered the royal family.
No one fretted over a woman ascending the throne.
Thus, when the prince, Asil, became the Magic Tower Master, the people respected his choice, thanks to Princess Louise, who closely resembled her mother.
A wise monarch, a prince who was the Magic Tower Master, and a princess who is heir to the throne. Along with a beloved youngest princess. It made the royal family of Segolinde perfect.
Until the youngest princess was thought to have died in an accident.
“How long do you plan to hide in the inner palace?”
Ophelie gently yet firmly reproached her daughter.
When her daughter, who was believed to be dead, returned alive, she thanked God.
However, when she learned that Mirabel was pregnant, it wasn’t joyous anymore. Her precious daughter was carrying a child whose father was unknown. It was embarrassing.
“Do you still not remember who Charles’s father is?”
“I’m sorry, Mother.”
Under Ophelie’s scrutiny, Mirabel bowed her head deeply.
Before, even under stern reprimand, Mirabel would have smiled brightly and hugged her mother. But after facing death, she became noticeably darker.
“I’m not trying to scold you.”
Ophelie expressed uncomfortable feelings.
She could accept Mirabel’s pregnancy and the birth of Charles. Though shocking and embarrassing, that was all there was to it.
Her child returned from the dead, so what’s the big deal?
Yet, what troubled Ophelie was the change in Mirabel’s personality. What had happened to her daughter to make her so easily deflated?
“Mirabel, my daughter.”
Ophelie reached out and gently caressed Mirabel’s cheek. She softly smiled as she stroked her smooth skin.
“Just as you cherish Charles, I cherish you. That’s why I’m saying this.”
Hearing Ophelie’s tender words, Mirabel slowly lifted her gaze. She looked straight into her mother’s eyes before speaking.
“It doesn’t matter who Charles’s father is. He’s my son, born to me.”
“A child needs a father. You missed your father a lot when you were young.”
Ophelie sighed as she mentioned her late husband.
“I’ll talk to Asil about using a memory restoration spell on you. Don’t you wonder what happened to you during this time?”
“Please don’t.”
Mirabel shook her head to Ophelie’s suggestion.
She hadn’t lost her memory, so Asil’s magic would be pointless. More importantly, Mirabel wanted to forget her past.
