I Don't Need the Grand Duke's Regret - Chapter 60
‘No way.’
Ugo is the most skilled doctor in Renato. There is no way he wouldn’t know the fact that she was pregnant while he was treating her.
Ugo is now asking Armilla if she is aware of her own condition. Her heart pounded as she read the hidden meaning behind his question. Anxiously, Armilla grabbed him and asked.
“Did you tell His Grace?”
“You knew.”
As Armilla asked urgently, Ugo shook his head,
“I haven’t told him yet. There’s something I need to confirm first. First, is the child you are carrying His Grace’s seed?”
“If it is?”
“You should inform His Grace immediately. There’s a potential heir to Renato, isn’t that a blessing?”
“What if that’s not the case?”
“That!”
Ugo’s face turned pale as she suggested another possibility. He shivered as if not even wanting to imagine.
While staying in the palace over the past week, Ugo learned that Armilla is the rumored Grand Duchess.
Since he heard the rumor about the Grand Duke getting married, he had early suspicions that Armilla might be the Grand Duchess. However, considering the cold attitude of the servants towards Armilla, he doubted it.
“It’s not possible for the Grand Duchess to conceive another man’s child. It’s not only improbable but also unacceptable.”
Ugo spoke in horror.
During the week when the Grand Duchess lost consciousness, he found out that the Grand Duke was obsessed with her. It was more than just a rumor
The Grand Duke visited the Grand Duchess relentlessly. He didn’t eat nor sleep properly. Moreover, he nagged Ugo to stay with her until she woke up every day.
If the Grand Duchess doesn’t wake up today, Ugo is scheduled to die at the Grand Duke’s hands. That’s why he forcefully woke her up using strong medicine.
“As soon as His Grace finds out, a storm will rage in Renato. Me and everyone in this mansion, all will die…”
Ugo trembled, unable to finish his sentence. Even imagining it was dreadful.
Contrastingly, Armilla remained calm. Observing Ugo’s reaction, she carefully looked at him and slowly spoke.
“Then let’s keep it that way.”
“What?”
“So, please keep my pregnancy a secret.”
“What are you talking about…”
Ugo responded with a confused expression to Armilla’s answer. Rubbing the aging wrinkles around his eyes with a trembling hand, he finally spoke.
“A doctor can’t lie.”
“What if it’s to save lives?”
Armilla pleaded earnestly, clutching her stomach.
“A doctor is someone who saves lives.”
Armilla pleaded with urgency and desperation.
“Please, keep it a secret. That way, both I and this child can live. I’ll make sure Ugo doesn’t get hurt. Please pretend not to know. Please…”
Armilla’s voice shook as she pleaded with the doctor.
Hearing her tender voice moistened with tears, Ugo looked at her with a troubled face.
“Even if I don’t say anything, it’s only a matter of time before His Grace knows.”
“Don’t worry. It will be resolved before that.”
Armilla spoke firmly, wiping away the tears. Ugo wanted to ask how she was going to do that, but he swallowed down the pressing question. Instinctively, the sense that the more he knows, the more dangerous it becomes blocked his mouth.
Having obtained the doctor’s silence, Armilla turned her moist eyes to look out the window. Her piercing gaze extended beyond the mountains.
* * *
Armilla faithfully followed Ugo’s instructions. She endured the nausea, ate her meals, and swallowed the bitter medicine without hesitation.
Seeing her actively trying to recover, Ricardo also seemed relieved. It seemed that he decided to go to the palace because of this.
“We can no longer ignore the decree.”
Nasir, who came to see Armilla, explained with a troubled expression. He did not disclose the contents of the decree but only conveyed that it was causing Ricardo great difficulty.
“We might be accused of rebellion if we continue to resist. There are those in the imperial family who do not view Renato favorably.”
“Will Nasir be coming along too?”
“Yes, the Crown Prince called, so I will be coming together.”
Armilla nodded her head while listening to Nasir’s answer.
It was another opportunity to escape that she had been waiting for.
With her strength returning, if Ricardo headed to the palace, she could leave the mansion immediately.
‘Finally.’
Armilla felt relieved.
Ricardo mentioned that he couldn’t capture the leader beast in the recent subjugation. Therefore, Armilla expected him to return to the mountains soon.
However, he showed no signs of doing so. He only watched Armilla with sharp predator’s eyes.
Armilla became increasingly anxious.
Her once flat stomach was gradually swelling. For now, she could use her recovery as an excuse to avoid sharing a bed with Ricardo. However, it wouldn’t be long before Ricardo became suspicious. It was only a matter of time before he noticed that she was pregnant.
She contemplated subtly asking Ricardo about subduing the beast. With him heading to the palace, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.
‘It’s fortunate that Nasir is leaving.’
An additional set of watchful eyes at the mansion is now gone. Armilla said with a gentle smile.
“When will you be departing?”
“We’ll leave before sunrise tomorrow. We should have left last week, but the Master kept delaying. He asked me to explain the situation to Lady Armilla. We’ll be back soon, so don’t worry and wait patiently.”
