Chapter 47.2
“Well, I mean, it tastes just as good as always. You must be getting nervous with the cafe opening approaching, right? I know how that feels, too, but you have nothing to worry about. Your coffee is perfect, Miss April.”
“I’m not asking about the coffee—how’s your shoulder?”
“My shoulder…?”
“Yes! You mentioned earlier that your shoulder was stiff. Is it any better now?”
As Hans cautiously moved his arm again and winced slightly, April felt she had her answer.
“Is it still hurting?”
“Of course. Shoulder pain tends to stick around for several days. So, you should be careful too, Miss April. You need to stay healthy if you want to run the cafe properly.”
The coffee she made contained a healing spell. It was supposed to take effect the moment someone drank it, but the fact that Hans’s shoulder was still hurting meant…
‘…Is it really not working?’
She couldn’t just leave it at that. April moved on to her next targets: the kitchen maid who had cut her finger while chopping ingredients, the attendant who had twisted his ankle, and even the maid who was suffering from a cold. She scoured the mansion like a detective, eagerly making coffee for anyone who wasn’t feeling well, yet none of them showed any signs that the magic was working.
Not a single one!
After finally making a hot chocolate for Asher, who mentioned his throat was sore from exhaustion, she had no choice but to accept it.
‘Something is wrong.’
The outcome would probably be the same even if she gave Claude his coffee. He likely wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight, either.
That night, before heading to Claude’s bedroom, April wrestled with her thoughts over and over again.
‘What if I can’t use magic anymore?’
Embarrassingly, her first thought was a selfish one. What if she lost the six hundred million won a year and the cafe?
It wasn’t just the six hundred million won. The thought of losing the chance to open her cafe hurt even more than losing the money. Even though she hadn’t realized it before, she must have been looking forward to the cafe’s opening more than she thought.
Next, she felt sorry for Sophia. How would she take responsibility for Sophia, who had quit her job at the royal kitchen, believing in her? Lastly, she was afraid of what Claude might do. What if Zenon Olson was behind all of this? And what if Claude started to doubt their relationship because of it?
The thought alone sent shivers down her spine.
She had countless worries, one after the other, but nothing clear came to mind. In the end, time passed without any progress, and it was finally time to face Claude. As she walked toward him with a heavy heart, he gave her a puzzled look, noticing she had come empty-handed.
Before he could ask, she blurted out her confession.
“I… I don’t think I can use magic anymore.”
“Hm?”
April continued, her voice trembling as if she might burst into tears.
“I even made coffee for other people, but none of them experienced any effects. I have to admit it—something’s definitely wrong with me.”
She couldn’t predict how he would respond. All she could do was expect him to react with cold, harsh anger, so she tightly shut her eyes. However, the words that came from Claude were completely unexpected.
“I see.”
“Yes.”
“But why do you look like that?”
Only then did April realize there was something odd about his tone, and she cautiously opened one eye.
“My expression… why?”
“You look like you’re about to cry any second.”
Well, that was true. She did feel like crying right now, but she could tell that wasn’t the kind of answer he wanted, so she kept her mouth shut.
Claude stood up from his seat and walked toward her. When he reached out his hand in her direction, April, despite knowing it was unlikely, felt a surge of fear, wondering if he might hit her. But contrary to her expectations, he merely cupped her cheek gently.
“You don’t seem like it, but you cry quite a lot.”
He then softly rubbed the corner of her eye with his thumb as if trying to soothe her.
“If you can’t use magic, then we just need to find a solution, don’t we?”
His rough, calloused fingers continued to stroke the corner of her eyes. The spot where he touched tickled, though it felt like something deep inside her was even more ticklish, causing her toes to curl involuntarily.
Her throat felt dry.
The way he was looking down at her was unfamiliar. Why was he looking at her with that gaze? April fluttered her eyelashes, blinking a few times before finally lowering her gaze.
“Uh… How?”
“We’ll figure that out later.”
Only then did Claude let go of her cheek and sit back down on the sofa languidly. He crossed his legs slowly and gestured with his chin toward her.
“So, where’s the coffee?”
“Oh, um, well, since the magic didn’t work anyway…”
Claude smirked, raising one corner of his mouth.
“So, you’re just not going to do your job?”
“No! Of course I will! Especially with how much I’m getting paid!”
Before he could say anything else, April hurriedly made her way to the kitchen. The strange conversation they had last night had already been erased from her mind.
