Claude remained silent for a moment after April’s fervent response.

Seeing his reaction, April cautiously took a step back.

“If there’s nothing more you want to say, I’ll be leaving now.”

Just then, Claude stood up and grabbed her arm. His gaze, now directed at her, seemed a touch calmer than before.

“Then, why were you crying?”

April pressed her lips together. This time, she had nothing to say.

Claude’s eyes grew colder as he looked down at April. It was a sharp gaze, one she hadn’t seen since their first encounter, and it made her entire body tremble.

Noticing her shaking hand, Claude let go.

“Okay. You’re right, you’re not obligated to.”

Was there a trace of disappointment in his voice, or was she imagining it?

“Duke…”

Almost instinctively, April reached out toward Claude as he moved away, but he coldly brushed her hand aside. It felt like a light push, yet it hurt. Tears pricked her eyes.

Or maybe, there was another reason for the tears gathering at the corners of her eyes.

Claude’s eyes widened briefly in surprise before he clenched his jaw and spoke.

“You should leave now.”

“But the coffee cup…”

“I’ll have someone else take care of it later. So, just leave now.”

At his words, April watched Claude turn his back on her indifferently before she stepped out of the office.

‘I did everything I could.’

She felt she’d given reasonable answers and managed to handle the situation well. No, she thought she had handled it… But then, why did her chest feel so heavy?

April rubbed her still-stinging hand as she made her way back to her room.

It was a night of conflicting emotions.

After April left, Claude downed the now-cold coffee in one swift gulp as if it were a shot of liquor. The cold liquid sliding down his throat left an unpleasant feeling.

April was always bold in front of him. However, Zenon Olson dared to claim April as his, throwing around words like fiancée as if he had any right.

“Zenon…”

Claude gritted his teeth once more.

His cousin, Zenon Olson, had always been full of greed since childhood. Zenon might have thought he kept it well hidden, but Claude knew that every time he looked at him or his older brother, Leonard, there was a flash of malice in his eyes. He had only let it slide because Zenon hadn’t acted on it.

However, if Zenon dared to mess with someone who belonged to him, Claude would no longer let him off so easily.

Maybe he should prevent Zenon from approaching April altogether.

Claude shut his eyes, running through the various ways he could deal with Zenon. He had intended to catch a light nap in his office rather than head to bed.
