“You don’t need to be so wary. It’s only natural for me to take care of my fiancée.”

“We’re not engaged anymore.”

“That was just your one-sided decision. I still don’t think we’re broken off, and neither does Count Renoen. He has no intention of disowning you.”

He gently grabbed a lock of her hair and kissed it.

“So, if anything happens, come find me, my Lily.”

April tossed her hair back and retorted as if showing off.

“That will never happen.”

“Don’t use the word ‘never.’ You never know how things in this world might turn out.”

Instead of firing back with more retorts, April just scoffed and walked past him. She swore she would never get entangled with Zenon again.

Yes, she was definitely planning to return straight to the party.

“Do the two of you know each other?”

A voice that shouldn’t have been heard at this moment rang out. It was Claude Winterville’s voice. Claude’s eyebrows twitched slightly.

“Engagement?”

“No, what I mean is… we’re really nothing to each other now.”

April muttered, almost like she was trying to explain herself. In her mind, fragments of the original novel drifted around.

‘It would be a disaster if Claude thinks I’m still entangled with Zenon.’

Zenon Olsen wouldn’t give up the Winterville dukedom, even without her. If he ever made a move in the future, she wanted to avoid getting involved just because she had once been his fiancée.

Just as April was about to firmly set things straight, Claude suddenly stepped close and cupped her cheek. His cold thumb brushed over her reddened eyes.

“Have you been crying?”

April bowed her head, trying to hide her face, but Claude lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.

“Why were you crying?”

Zenon answered for her.

“Why else? It’s because she was overwhelmed with emotion after seeing her beloved fiancé again after all this time.”

“Didn’t she say she’s not your fiancée?”

“As I mentioned, I have no intention of breaking off the engagement.”

Unlike Zenon, who spoke with a sly tone, Claude’s demeanor grew increasingly menacing. He looked more displeased than she had ever seen him. It was the first time he had shown his emotions so openly.

Fearing that she might really upset Claude, April quickly opened her mouth.

“We didn’t have a formal engagement ceremony, nor did we draft any engagement documents. It was just a verbal engagement. It wasn’t even a matter to discuss breaking off. It was, quite literally, just an oral agreement.”

“So, that’s how it is.”

Zenon fell silent for a moment as though he couldn’t refute that statement. However, as Claude started to take April away, he quickly asked.

“And what about you? What kind of relationship do you have with Lily to interfere between us?”

“….”

Claude sneered as if the question wasn’t worth answering, then took April’s hand.

“Well, we’d better get going. Asher is waiting for us.”

“Wait a minute, Claude.”

“Do you still have something to say, Zenon Olson?”

At the sight of Claude’s gaze, which looked as though he might tear him apart if he spoke, Zenon nervously rubbed his neck and forced a laugh.

“No, nothing. See you next time, Lily.”

April wanted to retort that there wouldn’t be a next time, but with Claude pulling her away, she couldn’t get the words out. She expected Claude to ask more about her relationship with Zenon, but on the way back to the party hall, he remained completely silent.

Hunched over like someone who had committed a crime, she sneaked a glance at Claude’s profile. His jaw was tightly clenched as if he was gritting his teeth.

It wasn’t until they reached the entrance of the hall that he finally spoke.

“We’ll talk later.”

Then, without another word, he walked inside, leaving her behind.

‘…Ah, I just want to go back to my room.’

After a moment of hesitation, April noticed Asher, who was waving at her from across the room, and headed over to him. She didn’t speak to Claude for the rest of the party.
