Chapter 45.1
The red-haired man, who was once her fiancé, smiled at her, his eyes crinkling softly. It seemed like an incredibly kind smile on the surface.
Perhaps the whole world believed that Zenon Olson was kind and gentle.
But at least one person, April, wasn’t fooled by that smile.
‘A man like a snake1.’
Zenon’s true face beneath that mask was dark and vile.
However, despite those feelings, a single tear fell from her right eye.
It was her body reacting, not her mind.
In the past, the real April Renoen had loved Zenon Olsen. It had only been two months since they met and just one month since they got engaged, but it was natural for her to fall for him. After all, he was the only person who had shown her kindness in a world that treated her so coldly. His sunshine-like smile, his soft-spoken voice, his charmingly sweet words—April had fallen for him at first sight.
She had no idea he would be the man to kill her.
Even now, her body responded to the Zenon she had loved back then. Her heart beat faster, a pleasant rhythm, and her face flushed. The tears that had once fallen continued to stream down, unaware of the current April’s true feelings.
‘Why now, of all times…’
She tried to nonchalantly wipe away her tears, but before she could, Zenon gently brushed a tear from her cheek with his thumb. He wore an expression of pity, but April saw the triumph in his eyes. That ridiculous sense of victory, still thinking she loved him, full of confidence.
“Oh, my dear Lily.”
As he murmured in a voice so greasy it felt like it was slathered in butter, goosebumps crawled up her arms.
“Why did you leave me so coldly when you still love me this much?”
“I…”
April barely managed to force out the words from her voice that wouldn’t come.
“I don’t love you.”
But saying that while crying lacked credibility. In fact, Zenon didn’t believe her either, perhaps thinking it was just a childish lie from her.
He nodded as if he understood.
“Lily, I know why you left me.”
Know? April’s heart skipped a beat, but for a very different reason.
‘…Could he have figured out that I know about his plan?’
But thankfully, or perhaps unfortunately, what Zenon said next was something entirely different.
“Amelie was just someone I met briefly at the party. You know that the only one I truly love is you, right?”
April was dumbfounded.
…Amelie? That was a woman’s name, wasn’t it?
‘This piece of trash. He even cheated?’
In the original story, there hadn’t been any mention of an affair, so this was the first time she had heard about it. Not that she had any feelings left for him, but this made her lose what little respect she still had. The tears that had been flowing dried up instantly.
As April roughly wiped her eyes, Zenon grabbed her hand. He stared directly into her eyes and kissed the back of it. Unlike a typical light kiss, this one was heavy with possessiveness.
At a glance, it might have looked like he truly loved her.
When Zenon showed no intention of pulling his lips away, April quickly withdrew her hand. Noticing her obvious discomfort, he smiled and asked.
“So, why are you staying at the Winterville estate?”
“….”
“Have you gotten close to Claude or something? Hm, is that it?”
Maybe it was just her imagination, but Zenon seemed irritated. It wasn’t the reaction she had expected.
‘I thought he would try to use me if I seemed close to Claude?’
It felt more like he was interrogating an ex-lover who had moved on to someone else.
Fearing she might accidentally provoke him, April kept her mouth tightly shut, but Zenon took her hand again, gently rubbing the back of it with his thumb. His hand slowly slid further down until he was touching the inside of her wrist, right where her pulse was beating.
“I won’t pry into what’s going on. I heard from Count Renoen that you’ve run away.”
It wasn’t running away—it was leaving. However, April swallowed those words.
“What could you possibly do on your own? You must have had a hard time before finding a job with the Duke’s family, right? But Lily, if that’s the case, you should have come to me. Why are you here? It’s still not too late, come with me.”
April slapped his hand away.
“Why would I?”
