Chapter 38.2
April decided to think as positively as possible.
“I’ll do it!”
Claude smirked.
“Really? Didn’t you say you had plans that day?”
“Me? I have no plans! Even if I did, I’ll cancel and attend! It’s Asher’s birthday party, after all.”
“That’s good then.”
Claude whispered as he tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear.
“You’ve thought through this well.”
Even though it sounded like something would happen if she couldn’t attend until the end, April was so caught up in excitement that she didn’t notice.

‘I’m screwed.’
April slumped over the table. She was blinded by money and had agreed to attend the party last night, but now she regretted it.
‘…What if I run into Zenon Olsen?’
Worse yet, what if he said in front of Claude that ‘April was my former fiancée’? Before she would get caught up in Zenon’s scheme, she might face Claude’s interrogation about why she never mentioned such a fact before potentially meeting her death.
‘Should I say I can’t attend now?’
There were other ways to promote the cafe. Since this wasn’t the only opportunity, what if she came up with another reason not to go now?
Lost in thought, April lifted her head at the worried voice from in front of her.
“Sister, what’s wrong? What’s going on?”
Asher, who was copying letters for homework across from her, tilted his head and watched her curiously.
April quickly changed the subject.
“Asher, isn’t your birthday coming up soon?”
“Ah…”
The child twisted his body as if he was embarrassed.
“Yes. My birthday is May 16th.”
There was really only about a month left, and the party was on May 21st. At the thought, April glanced teasingly at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me? I’m the last one to know.”
“But…”
The boy, who had been smiling, suddenly looked sad and fidgeted with his fingers.
“I didn’t think it was a special day.”
She was at a loss for words when she remembered the child’s past.
‘…He must not have had anyone to celebrate his birthday.’
Asher’s mother passed away when he was two years old, and he didn’t have a father. His only remaining family, his aunt, neglected him, so there was no one to celebrate his birthday. It was unlikely that anyone in the village would have remembered either.
‘I’m glad he at least remembered when his birthday was.’
So, it was natural that he didn’t attach any meaning to his birthday.
April placed her hand on top of the child’s hand.
“It’s a special day. It’s the day you were born into this world.”
“….”
“Everyone will celebrate your birthday, and a lot of people will come to your birthday party.”
The child asked cautiously.
“Sister, too?”
“Of course!”
“Heh, that’s great then.”
The moment she heard the child’s shy voice, April made up her mind. Even if she had to meet Zenon, she would attend Asher’s birthday party. At the same time, seeing the bright smile on the child’s face, she briefly blamed her past self for considering skipping the party.
‘I must be crazy. I can’t believe I’m thinking of abandoning cute Asher just because of Zenon Olsen.’
Although he had somewhat adapted to this mansion, Asher still relied heavily on her. One of the child’s favorite times was drinking hot chocolate with her. It was the day that such a child took his first steps into the difficult world he had never experienced before. On a day like that, it was only natural that she should be by his side.
As a result, she ended up attending the party, but her past actions weren’t forgotten. April gently stroked the child’s cheek, filled with apology. Lately, his plump cheeks felt soft to the touch.
“What do you want as your birthday present?”
“Hmm.”
Asher pondered as he bit the tip of his quill. April carefully removed the quill from the child’s mouth and waited for his answer.
“I want to eat the chocolate cake we had last time.”
“Chocolate cake?”
“Yes. It’s the one Sister Sophia gave me.”
“Oh, you mean the Sacher-Torte. Alright. I’ll ask Sophia to make a special three-layer cake for you. Anything else?”
Asher’s eyes widened as if her words were unexpected.
“Anything else?”
“Yeah. A cake isn’t just a gift, it’s something we should definitely have. Apart from that, tell me what else you want as a present.”
Although she was taken aback by the little boy’s sudden birthday, she quickly realized that she wanted to give him the best gift possible. After all, the best gift wasn’t necessarily an expensive one but something the recipient truly wanted.
“Mmm.”
Asher was once again lost in thought. However, the child who was living without anything in the Winterville family wouldn’t be lacking anything special that he needed.
He pondered for a while as if he couldn’t decide before smiling again.
“I’ll tell you later when I think of something.”
