Chapter 28.2
April vigorously whisked the coffee. A minute passed, then two, and before she knew it, ten minutes had passed, and it was around twenty minutes.
‘Wow, this is no joke.’
It looked easier when she saw it on the internet in the past, but it seemed to be harder, probably because it was espresso.
April rubbed her numb arms and glared at the bowl. Before she knew it, a light brown foam had formed on top of the brown coffee. However, it didn’t turn into the cream she wanted. Moreover, when she looked below, half of the coffee was still at the bottom.
It was supposed to be a thick cream without any coffee…
‘Why is it like this?’
As she was pondering over why this was happening, Hans added carefully.
“It seems like there might not be enough sugar.”
“As expected, right?”
After a brief contemplation, she added thirty grams of sugar. To her surprise, as the sugar was added, the watery sugar coffee thickened even more as she stirred.
Before she knew it, there was no coffee left.
“Oh, adding sugar does make a noticeable difference.”
“Just a bit more, and it should be done.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to help you?”
“It’s okay. I can do it!”
April clenched her teeth and whisked even more vigorously. The strength in her arms had already started to wane, so the speed wasn’t as fast as it was initially.
After whisking for about ten more minutes…
“It’s done!”
She cheered with delight as she watched the heavy cream drip from the lifted whisk.
The cream she saw on the internet was even thicker than this. Some creams wouldn’t even fall off if you turned the bowl upside down. Perhaps because it was made with espresso, it wasn’t as firm, though it still had a well-formed cream shape. It had a similar thickness to the whipped cream she recently made for the Einspänner a while ago.
Nevertheless, the color was similar to the dalgona she made earlier.
“Mr. Hans, could you pour milk into an ice cup? My arm hurts too much…”
“Of course I can! I’ll get it right away.”
As Hans left the room, Asher approached quietly.
“Sister, are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Doesn’t your arm hurt?”
The child gently patted her right arm with hands like bracken*. While it didn’t actually have much effect, she appreciated the gesture and stayed still.
[ T/N: An idiom which means, ‘Soft and cute hands of a little kid.’ ]
“Sister, does it feel better?”
“Ung.”
She even told him a white lie. Asher, with a bright smile that seemed almost invisible after hearing her words, continued to squeeze her arms more earnestly.
“All right, I got it.”
“Oh, Asher. It’s okay now.”
April carefully spread the dalgona cream over the glass cup that Hans had brought. Despite the fact that she was worried that the cream might not be as firm as she wanted, fortunately, it piled up nicely on top of the milk.
“Wow, it’s beautiful!”
“Really?”
“Yes! It looks like the sun is setting.”
At the child’s words, she gazed at the transparent glass, where the brown cream floated atop white milk. At first glance, it indeed resembled a scene as if watching the sunset, just like Asher described. It was akin to the crimson sun setting over the blue sea.
“Now, let’s mix it up and try it.”
April stirred to ensure that the milk and cream blended well. As the cream mixed in, the coffee had small bubbles appearing on top, resembling frothed milk.
“Hmm?”
The first thing that touched her tongue was the sweetness. Following that, the smoothness of the milk foam enveloped her tongue and then came the subtle aroma of coffee.
She thought that dalgona coffee, with its mix of milk, sugar, and coffee, might be similar to a cafe latte with syrup. However, it was completely different. Strangely, it had a smoother taste than a cafe latte with added milk foam. To put it a little more simply, it tasted like eating melted ice cream—the taste of scooping up the leftovers from your plate after enjoying a refreshing scoop of ice cream.
Soft yet sweet.
“What do you think?”
Hans asked impatiently as he watched April quietly savoring the taste. As the head chef overseeing the kitchen of the Duke’s estate, he was curious about the new menu.
“Is it similar to a cafe latte?”
“No, it’s different. I think it’s better to taste it yourself.”
Hans carefully savored the dalgona coffee and shared his thoughts.
“Oh, it definitely has a slightly smoother taste. The meringue-like foam makes the milk even creamier, creating a rich flavor. But surprisingly, the coffee aroma isn’t as strong as I expected?”
“Yes. The subtle coffee aroma makes it feel like you’re drinking sweet coffee milk.”
April was cautiously assured that she might be able to capture Hannah’s heart with this dalgona coffee.
“I think even people who don’t like coffee might be able to drink it without feeling burdened. However, I’m a little disappointed that it doesn’t have more of a coffee aroma, although it’s still delicious.”
Hans was as much of a coffee aficionado as her.
“Oh, that’s why I’ve prepared another menu as well.”
April once again poured milk into a cup and layered it with finely chopped dalgona on top before she pulled a shot of espresso on top.
“This is?”
