I Didn't Lull You to Sleep Only for You to Be Obsessed With Me - Chapter 44

Chapter 23.1
The coffee that had swelled up like a loaf of bread during the conversation soon settled back down. Before it became completely flat, the water was poured in a circular motion from the center again./span>
Finally, the coffee began to drip slowly and steadily from the dripper.
April tried her best to keep the stream of water as thin as possible. As the coffee beans swelled up again, she poured the extracted coffee into a cup while waiting for the beans to settle. Even without tasting it, she knew that this coffee would have a sour taste.
“I’ll start to prepare the coffee for the Duke now.”
Saying so, she poured water, waited, poured again, and waited. After repeating this process several times, she eventually poured the extracted coffee into a cup.
Before giving it to Claude, she didn’t forget to say, ‘I hope Claude sleeps well.’
“Now, please try it.”
When she placed a coffee cup on the tea table, Claude sat down in a chair and gestured to the chair opposite him.
“You should sit, too.”
“Isn’t it okay for me to go now?”
“I don’t have the hobby of enjoying refreshments by myself.”
April thought for a moment.
Obviously, her job was only to make coffee, and he had said that there was no need to do anything else. Still, how much money did she receive? Her conscience wouldn’t allow her to just leave, so she sat down on the opposite side. Since she had received a substantial amount of money, she could at least make some conversation for a while.
As Claude took a sip of the coffee, his expression remained unchanged, making it difficult to discern what he was thinking.
Feeling a bit anxious for no reason, she eventually asked.
“Is it to your taste?”
“Yes. It’s better because there’s no acidity.”
“That’s a relief.”
She watched him as he drank the coffee again and took a small sip of her own coffee. Even though she had been worried because the coffee beans were purchased in a hurry, the beans provided by the Duke’s estate were surprisingly fragrant.
‘I’d like to drink more, but if I do, I won’t be able to sleep.’
She put down her coffee cup with regret.
‘It’s contradictory for Claude to drink coffee tonight for the sake of getting some sleep.’
As she let out a chuckle, Claude placed his glass on the table and asked.
“What is so funny?”
“It’s nothing. I just thought that it’s amazing that you drink coffee to sleep.”
“What is amazing about that?”
“Well, if you drink coffee late at night, you won’t be able to sleep, right?”
“What do you mean?”
“Yes?”
Not understanding his words, April responded with a brief question instead of an answer.
Claude, like her, had an equally puzzled expression.
“It’s because of… the caffeine.”
“What is caffeine?”
Did they still not know about caffeine here? She couldn’t know because she hadn’t studied all of the coffee culture here yet.
‘I’ll have to look into it later.’
Thinking that, she glanced around roughly.
“Strangely enough, I have trouble sleeping when I drink a lot of coffee.”
“Is that so?”
“…I don’t suppose the Duke has ever had such experiences.”
Since he had insomnia originally, whether he drank coffee or not, he couldn’t sleep regardless. April, feeling embarrassed, absentmindedly handed a piece of Sacher-Torte to him.
“Try this one, too.”
“Is just one bite enough?”
“Yes.”
Claude gazed at the cake as if he were looking at the commander of an enemy army in the midst of a fierce battle before picking up a fork. He took an amount that was too small to call it ‘one bite’ and put it in his mouth.
As she waited for his reaction, she couldn’t help but wonder if he could really taste it with just that much.
“What do you think?”
“Well, it’s edible.”
“Is that all?”
“You’ve been forcing strange things on me since earlier. Did you expect me to recite the taste of this cake in detail?”
“No, it’s not that, but…”
April scrunched her neck like a frightened turtle as she watched Claude’s reaction. He didn’t seem angry, so she mustered up her courage to speak.
“It, it’s not just that it’s edible, but it’s delicious, isn’t it? I fell in love with it the moment I tried it!”
“Yes, I say so.”
For some reason, it felt like she had lost… but her opponent was Claude Winterville. She couldn’t argue with him, even once, let alone twice. She eventually lowered her tail and pouted her lips.
After that, she ran out of things to say.
It was when she didn’t feel the need to engage in a conversation with him, so she just looked down at the cup of coffee that Claude put down the empty coffee cup and stared intently into her eyes—
“Come to think of it, I don’t know anything about you.”
It was a truly unexpected question.
“…Me?”
“Yes, considering we could be called business partners, but I don’t know too much.”
April stirred her coffee absentmindedly with a spoon.
“Well, there’s probably nothing particularly noteworthy to know about me. In reality, there’s nothing special.”
“Still, if we’re on the same ship, we should at least know the basics, don’t you think?”
“The basics…”
Even if he asked her that, there was very little she could say. Whose story should she tell him? Should she tell him the story of ‘April,’ the owner of this body, or the story of ‘Yoon Min-ah,’ who had become the actual owner of this body?
Either way, it wasn’t very pleasant.
