Chapter 16.1
“It’s not like that.”
April retorted in an attempted nonchalant manner as she stepped down from the carriage. And then, she was surprised once again.
It was because of a multitude of employees who were lined up, waiting.
“Have you returned, Master.”
As they all synchronized in a collective bow, April was taken aback, while Asher was on the verge of fainting.
It was only Claude who adeptly acknowledged their greetings. The next moment, an elegantly dressed elderly gentleman with silver hair approached. Seeing that he was wearing a suit, April recognized him at once as the head butler.
“Welcome back, Master.”
“Yes. Is the room I requested prepared?”
“Yes. Both the emerald suite and the guest room are ready. In any case, could this be…”
Saying so, the butler’s gaze shifted toward Asher. His attitude while looking down at the child was nothing but courteous.
“Oh, yes. This is my nephew, Asher Winterville.”
“You do resemble Lord Leonard.”
The butler’s eyes momentarily reddened as if recalling Asher’s deceased father. However, he quickly composed himself and, this time, lowered his head toward April.
She bowed slightly in greeting.
“Excuse me, but who is this person…”
“Ah, this is Miss April. She has been taking care of Asher for a long time and was brought here as his nanny, so treat her accordingly. By the way, she’ll be running the cafe with the Winterville family in the future.”
“Then, the Young Master’s mother…”
“She passed away three years ago.”
“Ah…”
The butler seemed momentarily surprised but quickly composed his expression.
“I see. You must be tired from the long journey. Allow me to show you to your rooms.”
“Since you must be tired today after your journey, save the palace visit for tomorrow and get some rest. If you need anything or have any questions, feel free to ask the butler.”
Claude smoothly handed the responsibility of the two to the butler and began to walk away.
“Wait a moment!”
April hurriedly called out as he turned his back without hesitation.
“I have something to discuss regarding the cafe.”
While riding in the carriage, she thought about the cafe she would operate in the future. She needed three key individuals who would contribute to the cafe.
First, an alchemist who could create the necessary tools for the cafe.
Second, a skilled barista who could assist her in making coffee.
Third, a baker with unique ideas.
Although having an alchemist and a barista made sense, why would a pastry chef be necessary?
‘A cafe needs not only coffee but also desserts.’
In the small cafe she used to operate, she could make simple desserts herself and sell them. However, she didn’t have the capacity to create a wide range of menu items due to her limited abilities and constrained resources, and furthermore, she didn’t have many customers. Expanding the menu necessitated a larger array of ingredients, and if they weren’t sold in time, even with a refrigerator, she would still have to dispose of the surplus. Therefore, she had no choice but to curtail the menu options.
However, the situation was different in the capital.
As she listened to Claude speak, it sounded like he was envisioning a cafe of considerable scale. Moreover, the main customer base was composed of aristocrats. They have a significant interest in desserts and have encountered a wide variety.
While April might have some knowledge about coffee, she lacked confidence in catering to their tastes when it came to desserts.
As a result, she concluded that at least those three positions were absolutely necessary.
While baristas and bakers could be recruited through public announcements, it was a different story with an alchemist. Alchemists were already scarce in number, and skilled individuals capable of inventing the tools she desired were few and far between, to the point where they could be counted on one hand.
Naturally, the cost of hiring was exorbitant.
Considering her financial situation, she couldn’t afford to hire anyone so April was planning to ask Claude, who had both information and money, for help, especially concerning the alchemist.
To be honest, she had assumed that he would leave Lloyd to handle everything related to the cafe, but to her surprise, Claude listened to her.
“What is it?”
“I need the tools required to make coffee.”
“Just make a list and give it to Lloyd.”
“No, it’s not that simple. I need to create a new one.”
“A new one?”
“Yes.”
After taking a deep breath, April continued speaking.
“I need an alchemist.”
“….”
‘…Perhaps it’s an unreasonable request after all.’
Seeing Claude, who said nothing, she muttered faster than before.
“Well, I know that hiring an alchemist is expensive. I understand it’s a demanding request, and I’ve been considering it for a while before bringing it up like this. Still, it’s really necessary…”
“Enough.”
Claude raised his hand to cut off her words.
“Do you really think I would turn you down just because of money?”
“You’re… not?”
“I’m Claude Winterville?”

‘Oh, it seems like I touched the wrong nerve…’
Looking at him with a wry smile, April bit her lip and asked cautiously as she noticed his vicious smile.
“I didn’t expect you to worry about Winterville’s financial situation. What an honor.”
Another way to interpret it would have been, ‘How dare you underestimate Winterville’s financial state? Quite laughable.’
She quickly rectified it.
“It’s not like that. However, I didn’t know how much investment you’d provide for the cafe. After all, you’re already paying me a substantial salary.
