“Sister, I brought you flowers!”
In the morning, Asher, who had just brushed away the sleepiness from his eyes, came running back with a bunch of flowers. It seemed that Asher, perhaps conscious of the conversation during the meal the previous day, brought back more flowers than usual.
April divided the flowers into three vases and placed them around the cafe. It made the cafe feel more cheerful today.
“Hello, Asher!”
Anne, the little girl from the bakery, arrived with a steaming paper bag, a special delivery service.
“I brought some freshly baked bread.”
“Thank you. Would you like to go get a cup of hot chocolate? Anne is so lovely that sister wants to treat you.”
“Really? Then I’ll finish my drink and go!”
“Alright.”
“What about me?”
At his words, April gently touched the tip of Asher’s nose as his eyes widened.
“I’ll give you one, too.”
Meanwhile, several people came and went while the children sat across from each other at one table and drank hot chocolate. Today, their words were the same as always as well—that drinking April’s coffee would somehow alleviate their pain.
‘…As expected, it’s a placebo effect.’
Setting aside her musings, she busied herself in the kitchen, preparing sandwiches for the children. As the door to the café swung open, the bell hanging above it chimed loudly, announcing the arrival of a new customer.
Instead of frowning, she smiled and greeted the customer with a bright smile.
“Welcome… Ah, Duke. I see you’re here again.”
The person who entered was Claude, a figure who exuded a sharp aura, akin to a well-honed sword. April’s gaze flickered to Asher, whose expression had visibly hardened at the sight of Claude’s arrival.
Instead of approaching the child, however, he strode over to her.
There was a brief hesitation as he reached out his hands, only to swiftly withdraw them. Instead, he subtly closed the distance between them, narrowing the gap.
As he drew nearer, she caught a whiff of a refreshing, earthy scent, reminiscent of the air after a rain in the forest, mingled with the strong aroma of wood. Taken aback by the sudden proximity of his excessively handsome face, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of surprise.
Still, without missing a beat, she spoke up.
“What have you done to me?”
April had a blank expression on her face.
“What do you mean? I haven’t done anything…”
“That coffee… what the hell did you put in the coffee?”
His voice was low and calm, but there was an overwhelming presence as if he were shouting.
April replied, taking an involuntary step back.
“If you’re referring to the Americano I gave you yesterday, I didn’t put anything in it. I assumed you’ve been drinking a lot of coffee, so I didn’t add any sugar or milk in it…”
“What else did you put in there?”
“I didn’t put anything in. I don’t know if you know this, but an Americano is just espresso and water.”
“What kind of water did you put in it?”
At this point, April sensed that something was off about the way things were going with the situation. What was this? His attitude was as if she had put something she shouldn’t have?
It felt more like an interrogation than a simple question and answer.
Nonetheless, she answered faithfully.
“I used water from the village’s well…”
“I need to take a look at it.”
Claude was about to enter the kitchen haphazardly. While it didn’t matter if he went in, she needed to know the reason before that.
It was the moment when April reached out her arm to stop him…
“Please don’t do this!”
Asher rushed forward, spreading his arms to block Claude’s path.
“Please don’t bother sister April!”
As if coming to his senses by a stern voice, Claude stepped back and apologized.
“…I’m sorry for this.”
April readily accepted his apology.
“It’s okay. I’m just a little surprised.”
In fact, she was a little surprised in a different way.
‘I didn’t expect him to apologize so readily.’
Too often, she had encountered individuals who embodied arrogance and impoliteness, treating commoners as nothing more than insignificant beings.
‘April’s parents were such people.’
To be honest, when she first laid eyes on Claude, her initial assumption was that he, too, belonged to the category of arrogant nobles. His demeanor, laced with informal language and an emphasis on his status as a resident of Winterville, seemed to serve as a display of authority.
Apologies, in her mind, were unthinkable from someone of his ilk.
‘At least it seems like he knows how to take responsibility for his actions.’
As his image in her mind changed slightly, April asked what she wanted to know.
“But why did Your Excellency suddenly add to the coffee? Did the coffee taste strange to you?”
That was unlikely. If that were the case, he would have asked when he had the coffee yesterday.
Pursing his lips, Claude evaded the questions.
“That’s possible. Still, I’d like to see the water that’s used for the coffee.”
