Chapter 10.2
Afterward, he mixed in butter, salt, and pepper in the painstakingly mashed potatoes.
April began to put the finished food on a white plate one by one. She first placed the thick steak in the center before using a scoop to scoop up a scoop of tender mashed potatoes next to it.
Using long, slender tongs, she turned each grilled vegetable individually. As she placed two cherry tomatoes with long grill marks on top of each other, she crossed the asparagus with an X pattern. Next to it, purple onions and sautéed mushrooms, which still had grill marks on them, were added as well.
Some people might wonder why she would put so much effort into plating what she was eating when she wasn’t not selling it, but April’s theory was that the more beautifully it was plated, the more you eat.
She and Asher deserved the food they put so much effort into.
“Wow, it’s pretty. It’s like a rainbow.”
Asher, who was examining the bowl on tiptoe, spat out an exclamation. He swallowed his saliva to the point where it even made a gulping sound. Feeling proud, April smiled with pride as she drizzled the carefully boiled down wine sauce with a wooden spoon over the steak.
As she wiped off the gravy and sauce splashed on the edge of the plate with a clean towel, the dinner was finally completed for the two of them.
“Asher, go sit down.”
The child quietly sat down at the table at her words. It was so cute to see her waiting for her with a fork in one hand and a knife in the other.
‘It’s like a little puppy waiting for its food.’
Setting the plate down in front of Asher, she then wrapped a napkin around his neck.
“I’m not a child.”
Saying so, Asher pouted his cherry-like lips in dissatisfaction.
“I know.”
It was only when she wrapped a napkin around her own neck to appease him that Asher finally stopped pouting.
“Still, knives are dangerous so sister will cut it for you.”
“Yes!”
After cutting the child’s steak into bite-sized pieces, April cut her own steak with a fork and knife. As she sliced the steak apart, it revealed the pink flesh as juice was oozing from the cut section.
The steak was perfectly grilled to medium rare.
Slicing the steak into bite-sized pieces again, she put it in her mouth. As soon as she took a bite, the flavor of butter and the rich aroma of meat flowed from the steak. Since she added herbs to the butter, it also gave off a subtle herbal flavor.
Best of all, it melted in her mouth.
Even Asher, who was eating the cut steak with a fork, was also impressed.
“Wow, it’s delicious…!”
“Really? If it’s not enough, I can grill more, so eat to your heart’s content.”
“Yes!”
That evening, Asher ate the most he had ever eaten with April. She also made dessert tea for the child. It was a drink made with honey and lemon in rooibos tea. It was sweet and caffeine-free, so it was a great tea for him to drink before bed.
She cautiously asked Asher, who was puffing his cheeks to blow and sipping the warm tea.
“Are you sure you don’t want to go home, Asher?”
At those words, the corners of the child’s slightly sharp eyes, resembling Claude’s, drooped downward in an instant. His long eyelashes fluttered as he wore a pitiful as if he was about to burst into tears at any moment.
April was at a loss for a moment, but before she could correct her words, the child asked first.
“Am I annoying?”
She wondered how Sarah raised him so that such an answer came out of her question like that. ‘Annoying’ wasn’t one of the answers April was expecting. It wasn’t something she had even thought of, and it was certainly not a word that she ever thought would come out of a child’s mouth.
“That’s not true. I enjoy being with Asher, too. Isn’t being together more fun than being alone?”
“Hehe.”
“But now, you have a new family, and most of all, doesn’t Asher miss his aunt? ”
He shook his head.
“Aunt won’t want to see me.”
In fact, she didn’t want to say it, but it was something she recognized.
‘If she were worried about Asher, she would’ve taken him today.’
Nonetheless, Sarah got very angry at Asher’s comment about wanting to live here, and stormed out, saying, “If you want to live as you please, don’t even think about coming to my house again!”
That was why Asher was still with her.
‘…Is Asher really just a burden to Sarah?’
The thought didn’t make her feel well. In her previous life, she was an orphan. Since she was sent to an orphanage when she was very young, she didn’t know any of her family and didn’t have any blood relatives. She used to wonder if she could have gotten through the harsh world a little easier if she had a family.
But after seeing Sarah, I couldn’t figure it out.
‘Sarah probably loves and hates Asher.’
