Chapter 268

The reproachful look in his eyes seemed to scold her for using her words in such a way.
“Then what about my promise to protect you?”
“You have to keep it.”
“What?”
Stunned, Helios looked up at the ceiling with bloodshot eyes, his hand massaging his forehead.
“I never said I was going to die, Heli. I’ve done it twice, so I can do it a third time.”
Helios, faintly realizing what Sera was implying, quietly observed her.
She was relying on the divine power that had healed her before.
“To act just trusting that alone—it’s a gamble. Sera, even a slight absorption of the curse left you in that state. Can you imagine what will happen if the demon is fully sealed inside you? I absolutely…”
Sera shook her head, cutting him off.
“You have to permit it. I heard from Raphael. No one knows who the sealer is because it’s been kept secret. If you don’t permit it, I’ll reveal it myself.”
“Sera!”
“Heli, please. You know it too. That this is the only way. We have to save your siblings. Please.”
Logically, he knew.
As Sera had said, swapping her for his siblings and sealing the demon was the best course of action.
But it meant pushing the person he loved into danger. His heart couldn’t accept that choice.
She must be scared too.
Sera looked at him with earnest eyes, and the hand holding his was trembling slightly.
Irregular breathing and constantly pursing lips. Despite the calmness in which she delivered her words, her small body couldn’t possibly hide her fear.
Even if she trusted him entirely, even if by some luck the divine power could neutralize the curse devouring her body, fear was natural.
However, Helios frustratingly sensed an unyielding determination in Sera’s gaze not to reverse her decision.
“I love you, Heli. So, please permit it.”
Tears welled up in her eyes, looking at him.
Just before the tears could roll down her cheeks, Helios finally embraced her in his arms.
“You would have done the same, wouldn’t you? Please give me a chance to protect the people I love—Your Majesty and Their Highnesses.”
The fabric of his shirt soaked with the spreading ache in his chest. His throat tightened, making it hard to continue speaking.
She was right; he would have made the same decision.
“I couldn’t help but desperately wish our roles were reversed.”
Thus, Helios sincerely spoke those words from his heart.
He gently pressed his lips against Sera’s hair, making a solemn vow.
“I’ll keep that promise… the promise to protect you. I swear it.”
“Yes. I trust you, Heli.”
Helios’s throat clenched, and he hugged Sera even tighter.
He felt like if he didn’t hold her close, he wouldn’t be able to endure it.

Rosé and Ferre managed better than expected. Not to say they weren’t scared, but they could manage this far because they were at least given minimal, but all necessary care.
Although it wasn’t the lavish meals they were accustomed to, they were consistently provided with food.
There was no physical torment, nor were Rosé and Ferre separated.
Being together, not alone, served as a significant support for their determination.
Rosé and Ferre clung to each other, lying on the shabby bed.
The night was scarier than the day, and the evening scarier than the morning. As it got dark, they inevitably longed to see Sera and Helios.
“Rosé. There won’t be a monster coming out of that closet, right?”
Ferre whispered, pulling the blanket up to his head.
“Ah… Nothing’ll come out. The… The demon isn’t inside the closet but outside.”
Trying to be a little brave to protect her younger twin brother, Rosé was equally scared.
Peeking out from under the blanket to look at the closet, Rosé eventually hid quickly back under the worn blanket.
“Can we escape?”
Rosé shook her head, indicating no.
“No. I don’t think we can escape. The door won’t even open.”
Holding hands tightly, they looked at each other for a while before, as if they had made a pact, they took out their pigeon brooches hidden under the pillows.
These were the brooches they had been pondering when to use but ended up not using the day before.
“Is Sera okay?”
Ferre murmured worriedly.
“I don’t know. But I think they’re going to do something bad to Sera. You heard it too. That time, the…”
The words of the redhead demon flashed back, making them shiver.
It seemed like they were talking about sacrificing Sera to save them, which was even more horrifying.
“What are we going to do?”
Ferre asked Rosé with a concerned face.
“What do you want to do?”
Ferre carefully moved the blanket aside and climbed down from the bed. Rosé followed him to the window.
The height was dizzyingly high, not like the palace from where escaping was impossible, so they hesitated and stepped back.
“Rosé, this is supposed to send a signal to Sera, right?”
Ferre rubbed the smooth part of his brooch and muttered.
“Yeah. Ferre.”
“Let’s warn Sera. That’s all we can do right now.”
“Okay.”
Though she wasn’t bound by blood to them like their older brother Helios was, Sera was more than just a tutor to Rosé and Ferre—she was everything to them.
Just like losing their mom and dad, they didn’t want to lose anyone else.
Both of them kiss their brooches. Gently and with earnest hearts, they whispered.
“Sera, be careful. The demon is planning to do something bad to you.”
“We’re kinda scared, but we’re okay. Even if Oppa comes to save us, Sera should never ever come.”
As their small lips touched the brooches, as if the magic Sera talked about was real, the pigeons flapped their wings.
Carefully, making sure not to be noticed, Rosé and Ferre opened the window.
“I hope it can safely reach her.”
“I wish. I want to see Hyung and Sera soon.”
“Me too.”
Rosé and Ferre joined their small hands together.
Then they prayed for a long while, until the small flying pigeon was out of sight.
Unaware of the eyes watching their every move.
