“N-Nooo!”
The moment a sharp dagger pierced her chest, Sera’s eyes snapped open. It was another nightmare.
She had lost count of how many times she had woken up from sleep since dawn.
Every time Saruvia stabbed her heart, the dream would break off there.
Ever since she told Helios those words yesterday, thoughts related to the demon hadn’t left her mind, likely affecting her dreams like an obsession.
Despite speaking calmly to Helios, she was actually scared. What were her chances of survival?
But she didn’t regret her decision. If given the chance to go back to yesterday, she would have said the same thing.
‘It’s something only I can do.’
Even though it was just a dream, the area around her heart felt painful, so Sera rubbed her left chest.
It was still early morning when she tried to go back to sleep, but the hallway was noisy.
“What’s going on?”
Worried it might be something important, Sera hurriedly got out of bed.
As she flung the door open, there stood Helios, dressed neatly in his uniform, looking troubled among the maids at the door.
“Your Majesty, it’s much too early now. Lady Popo hasn’t even changed yet…”
Glancing at Sera with a side-eye, a maid cautiously added to Helios, hoping he would change his mind.
It wouldn’t look good for an unmarried woman’s room to be visited by the emperor early in the morning in the palace, full of watchful eyes, especially since the two weren’t in a romantic relationship, making it more prone to gossip.
However, Sera understood why Helios had come.
Just in case.
Since they didn’t know how much time they had, rumors or reputation didn’t matter to them anymore. Sera didn’t want to care about such things either.
“May I come in?”
Ignoring the maid’s attempts to stop him, Helios directly asked Sera.
“Of course.”
Sera smiled warmly, welcoming his visit, leaving the maid no choice but to step aside as Helios entered.
The maid, looking somewhat shocked, quietly bowed and closed the door.
“Sera.”
As soon as the door closed, Helios enveloped Sera in his embrace.
Though his gaze was filled with love and warmth, it also carried a hint of bitterness, like the dim light of early morning, unable to smile as freely as before due to the circumstances.
“I wanted to ask if you had a comfortable sleep, but it seems you hardly slept at all.”
Helios, having carefully observed Sera, had already figured everything out.
“How did you know?”
Sera asked, her eyes wide with surprise, and he gently straightened her tousled hair.
Realizing she was still in her pajamas and hadn’t even washed her face, Sera hid her face in embarrassment.
“Oh, I haven’t even washed my face yet.”
She whispered softly, and Helios chuckled lightly, gently stroking her flushed cheek.
“You’re beautiful no matter what.”
Sera nestled in Helios’s embrace, breathing in his scent deeply.
Just being with Helios seemed to erase the fearsome and difficult nightmares.
“When do we have to go? You seem busy, dressed in your uniform from the morning.”
“There’s still a bit of time. That’s why I came to see you for a moment.”
“…Can I ask what you’re doing today?”
Still embracing him, Sera cautiously lifted her head to look at Helios.
Helios gazed down at her, his eyes deepening.
“I’m going to hear a report from the search team on the progress of finding Rosé and Ferre. I probably… shouldn’t get my hopes up too high.”
He had never shown it in front of her, but mentioning his siblings, he couldn’t hide his concern.
Seeing Sera look at him worriedly, Helios comforted her instead, assuring her it was okay.
“They’re strong kids, they’ll be alright.”
“Yes, they’re really strong.”
Sera nodded.
Helios, softening his serious expression a bit, turned her around.
Then, lifting her up suddenly in a princess carry, Sera was startled but wrapped her arms around Helios’s neck.
“What are you doing?”
Helios, with a slightly playful smile, strode towards the bed.
After gently setting Sera down on the bed, she looked at him with a somewhat baffled expression.
“Are you telling me to sleep more?”
“Since you said you had a restless sleep, I thought you should rest a bit more.”
Tucking her in and covering her with the blanket, Helios smiled gently.
Sitting beside the bed and offering a tender smile, Sera returned a slightly more relaxed smile.
The smile, both real and feigned, was too precious to waste just on frowns for the remaining time.
