Chapter 253

“Heli?”
Raphael carefully placed his hand on Helios’s shoulder.
The golden divine power was leaking out in a sharp form from Helios’s body, who seemed unable to control his emotions right now. There was only one thing in his mind; wishing that what he had just heard was not true.
“Heli, your divine power.”
Raphael called Helios again, gently tapping his shoulder.
Only then did Helios, regaining his composure, lift his head and rein in his divine power.
The brightly shining gold dispersed into the air and faded away.
“What is this….”
Helios’s pale face, showing no expression, looked at Raphael and Jean.
Incredulous laughter burst out despite the situation being no laughing matter. The words the mages had just said seemed too absurd, almost like a lie.
“Heli…”
“……”
Helios, who had been silently watching the two, eventually buried his face deep in his palms, unable to continue.
Devil, sealing, curse.
These three words wandered through his mind, unable to connect.
He recalled what the mages said just as they were leaving the emperor’s office, added as if to emphasize.
“If it had realized that Lady Popo was unable to use magic following the incident at the imperial villa, then the demon would not just stand by and watch.”
“Your Majesty must protect Lady Sera Popo at all costs until the true nature of the demon is revealed.”
More shocking to him than the preposterous existence of the demon was Sera’s role in all this.
That Sera was the one who should seal the demon.
None of what he had heard today should have been connected to her.
It had all seemed like mere coincidence. That the curse had no effect on her when they were at the villa, that she couldn’t use magic.
Protect Sera until the demon’s true nature is known.
A tool for sealing. A disposable item.
His throat tightened at the thought of protecting Sera as if that was her only purpose.
“Raphael. Jean.”
Within the confusion of unresolved thoughts, Helios closed his eyes and called them.
Worried eyes examined Helios.
“Keep this matter to yourselves. Until we uncover the demon’s true nature, it cannot leak out. We don’t know how people will react once they find out we know.”
Raphael and Jean nodded silently, knowing that there was no other way.
Revealing that the imperial family knew of the demon’s existence would make it harder to track the demon, and the citizens of the empire would surely fall into chaos.
At least, the empire must not know of the danger until after the demon’s true nature is discovered.
“And…”
Helios’s voice deepened.
“Keep this matter secret from Sera for now.”
“Even from Lady Sera…?”
Raphael and Jean, slightly surprised by Helios’s request to keep it a secret even from the concerned party, furrowed their brows.
“Will that be alright? Even if it concerns her specifically?”
As Raphael added with uncertainty, Helios’s cold eyes, devoid of warmth, immediately fixed on him.
“What do you think she would feel if she knew? What if she suddenly finds out about the appearance of a demon and that she’s the one who has to seal it? And what will happen afterward….”
Even knowing it wasn’t their fault, Helios’s tone was sharp, barely containing his suppressed emotions.
Raphael and Jean showed their understanding, wearing sympathetic expressions, and Helios belatedly softened his expression.
“Sorry.”
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it.”
Raphael and Jean struggled to find other words, managing only to say that.
What Helios must be feeling.
The two understood that Helios had no capacity to consider others in his current state.
The mages said they didn’t know about what happens to those who seal a demon, as it’s an old record, but ‘Containing a demon inside oneself is the same as accepting a curse more powerful than any magic.’ That statement couldn’t possibly entail a good future.
“While focusing on uncovering the demon’s true nature, look for another way to seal it. And… find out more about what happens after the sealing. Raphael. Even if we eventually have to tell Sera… not now.”
Helios’s hands, as pale as his voice, trembled with uncertainty. Raphael silently responded with a heavy silence.
They all knew that finding another way to seal the demon would be difficult, but none wanted to accept that reality, so no one spoke.
“Jean. We don’t know what might happen to Sera, so strengthen the security and magic barriers around her house. And… station a mage there too…”
Helios slowly lifted his head, opening his eyes that he had closed. An inscrutable expression surfaced on his face.
He knew that Raphael and Jean wanted to comfort him, but Helios looked out the window, putting on his coat.
All he could think of was seeing Sera and ensuring her safety.
There would never be a time when Sera would be used as a sacrifice.
Helios clenched his teeth, determined in this thought.
“…I’m heading to the Star Palace right now.”
