“What exactly is going on here?”
As Helios quickened his steps back to his office, he asked Raphael and Jean. Though he didn’t show it in front of Sera, seeing not only the knights but also these two come to him signified something significant, and his expression turned decidedly serious.
“It seems the mages have finally found something. They said they would like to speak directly to Your Majesty.”
Raphael was the one who answered, striving to maintain a strictly business-like tone despite being caught between Helios and Jean.
Sure enough, an awkward tension filled the air between Helios and Jean. This atmosphere had started to form ever since Helios indirectly acknowledged to Jean his good relationship with Sera.
Especially just now, as anyone could tell they were in the middle of a date, Helios seemed even more mindful of Jean’s feelings.
“Helios, um… you don’t have to feel too sorry towards me. Like I said before…”
Jean, ruffling his hair and speaking sheepishly, couldn’t hide his embarrassment. Despite all the signs, he had failed to guess the relationship between Helios and Sera and had awkwardly mentioned ‘Miss Sera…’ several times.
“Unlike you, my interest was fleeting… and above all, I was completely oblivious,” Jean apologized.
“Sorry I couldn’t tell you from the beginning, Jean.”
Time would surely return things to their original state. Their relationship wasn’t so fragile as to be damaged by such an incident.
Raphael, watching the two exchange an awkward smile, shook his head in disbelief.
“We don’t have time to waste. Let’s hurry, Your Majesty.”
The three hurried through the palace corridors. At the door, mages with solemn expressions awaited Helios.
“Your Majesty…”
Roward’s voice trembled with anxiety, as if foreshadowing ominous events.
* * *
A profound silence filled the emperor’s office, so dense it made breathing difficult.
After hearing the story from Roward and Araella, Helios, initially stunned into disbelief, finally spoke.
“Who did you say appeared? Say it again.”
Roward, who had been bowing deeply for a while, bowed even more profoundly as if that wasn’t enough.
Looking down as if his head might fall off, he took a heavy, metallic-scented breath between his tightly pressed lips.
“The red-eyed demon. Belzebuth.”
As the mage repeated this unbelievable name, Raphael shook his head in astonishment.
Jean, who had been silently standing beside Helios, couldn’t hold back a scoff.
“What nonsense… Aren’t demons just things of legend?”
Raphael, sharing the same sentiment, clicked his tongue in displeasure.
Roward and Araella, seemingly determined not to deny the claim, simply stood their ground silently.
“Ha.”
“My goodness.”
Both Raphael and Jean, at a loss for words, let out a bitter, incredulous laugh in unison.
Belzebuth. There was no one in the Empire who didn’t know that name.
The story of the demon who appeared long ago to destroy the Adelio Empire was a famous legend known to all citizens.
But it was just that—a story.
The red-eyed demon, known for once turning the empire into a sea of flames, belonged in a children’s fairy tale.
At least, that was the belief until just a moment ago.
As Raphael and Jean, disbelieving, glanced at each other, Helios’s gaze fell on the thick tome that Araella handed to him. It was an ancient history book containing records related to the empire’s magic.
Flipping through the pages marked on the edge of the book, Helios noticed a few written characters on the old paper and his expression darkened.
He appeared calm, but his fingertips on the desk were tensed with strength.
“I’ve seen the achievements of the First Emperor who defeated the demon… I thought it was just an exaggeration to deify the emperor at that time… but it seems it actually happened. This is truly shocking.”
Helios’s words were met with cautious nods from Roward and Araella.
“At first, we also thought it might be a coincidence… But to break through a protective spell and wield such power, it must be an entity of that magnitude.”
Roward started to explain with a grim expression.
“The incidents at the palace, the train accident that took the late former Emperor and Empress, may their souls rest in peace. It has been uncovered that all were related to the demon with red eyes, and especially, the name ‘Belzebuth’ was mentioned whenever a person without mana appeared.”
A person without mana. Helios’s eyes narrowed at the mention.
Clearly, it was Sera.
