Chapter 237

“I never imagined a week would be this long.”
Araella lamented to Roward as she packed up various magical tools and books she had brought to the Star Palace.
The tools and books piled up on one side of the room were all meant for use and reading, but they remained untouched, waiting to be taken back as they were.
The problem had arisen from Roward’s false promise that all they needed to do was sit down and keep watch, with nothing to do.
Had she known that she would be so busy using magic non-stop, she wouldn’t have brought books, let alone volunteered at all.
“Are you saying this was hard work?”
Roward, who was meticulously polishing the staff he had toiled with for a week, looked back at the grumbling Araella.
Making sure no one was listening, the girl whispered with a lowered voice.
“Such noisy mana manifestations are rare. Not a single moment of relaxation. I heard the imperial family’s mana manifestation in the past was usually quiet. If I had known, I wouldn’t have come!”
Araella let out a resentful sigh, pointing at the dark circles under her eyes, a testament to sleepless nights. But as she did so, Roward’s harsh remark came flying.
“You weren’t exactly easy to handle when you were young either. You don’t have the right to say that.”
“Grandfather!”
“Close your mouth and tidy up your things. Go and finish the work piled up.”
With a look that seemed to say, ‘If you don’t like it, so be it,’ Roward attempted to poke Araella’s foot with his staff.
It was an attack that came whenever Araella made a useless comment or behaved wrongly.
Araella had been raised by Roward after he saved her from a life of wandering the streets. She was an exceptional child with magical talents that left others in the dust. However, her excessive naivety sometimes left her lacking in social skills.
As it was with her careless words now.
However, Araella deftly avoided it three times, looking back at Roward with a mischievous smile.
He let out a sigh and, taking advantage of Araella’s moment of carelessness, jabbed her foot again.
“Ouch! That hurts!”
Araella cried out in pain.
But Roward, showing no sign of concern, continued to polish his staff, adding a single comment,
“That’s the point!”
And there after was another slew of nagging.
Araella muttered something under her breath, even though her lips remained sealed, but Roward acted as if he didn’t hear it.
While complaining, Araella had been following his orders, and he knew she was really tired.
Lately, the imperial mages, including Araella, had been having extremely busy days.
They were all on edge, racking their brains to solve the mysterious events that had transpired at the imperial villa.
There was no doubt that something ominous was happening, but they had yet to grasp the nature of this threat, leaving the imperial mages in a state of constant anxiety.
And further, there was also the suspicious train accident involving the former emperor and empress. The sinister snake with red eyes. Someone capable of breaking through curses and nullifying magic.
Nothing had been conclusively revealed, but Roward was skeptical of whether all these events were mere coincidences.
He suspected that Sera Popo might be a common link to all these occurrences.
Lost in thought, he heard the sound of books pouring down as Araella attempted to move them all at once.
Roward, unable to stand the frustrating sight of Araella, rose to his feet to help.
“Ah, Grandfather. You’re not in good shape yourself. Please sit down.”
“No, I haven’t grown that old, you know.”
Roward replied, despite the strain on his back. He began to load the fallen books into a cart.
As he was about to pick up the last book at his feet, his eyes were drawn to an old book with an unfolded illustration.
“Grandfather?”
“Just a moment.”
Roward waved away Araella’s hand, which was reaching for the book, and carefully examined the illustration.
It was an illustration of a dragon with red eyes and black scales adorning its body.
Puzzled by his serious expression as he stared at the illustration, Araella asked,
“Grandfather, are you interested in this book?”
“What kind of book is this?”
“It’s classified as historical fiction, but it’s almost regarded as a legend. It’s an old story that’s really more like a fictional novel, with all its events that’re so far removed from modern magic. I borrowed it from the library out of curiosity, but it had hardly any believable information. It’s full of dragons and demons. But Grandfather, why are you staring at it so intently?”
“Legend… a legend… demons… dragons…”
Roward mumbled Araella’s words repeatedly, his expression hardening as if a sudden realization had struck him.
The idea that came to his mind seemed implausible, but his intuition insisted that the answer lay there.
Closing his heavy eyes, Roward whispered quietly to Araella,
“Call in more mages. I have a feeling I know where we should start to investigate…”
