Chapter 12.2

Any warmth Edith felt vanished in an instant. It was as if her blood had turned to ice. She exhaled slowly, trying to steady herself as the chill seeped into her veins.

Now, she finally understood why Lucion looked at her with so much pity.

“Did you look into my background?”

“I did. Father paid a hefty price to bring you here. If that’s not being sold off, then what is it?”

“That’s not—!”

“You say you accepted this marriage because you needed to? Seems to me it’s more like you didn’t even have the right to refuse.”

The deeper Lucion’s misunderstanding grew, the more Edith felt like she was losing her mind.

How had things spiraled so far out of control?

She bit her lip hard, frustration bubbling inside her.

‘I misjudged him.’

Even if she had been sold off, the Lucion from the original story would’ve scoffed and said something like, “What? You think you’re the only one who’s had it rough?”

But the Lucion in front of her wasn’t that person.

This fourteen-year-old boy could feel compassion. He understood shame. He was capable of forming emotional bonds with others.

And Edtih hadn’t realized it sooner. That had been her grand mistake.

If she’d known he would make such wild assumptions, she would have been honest with him from the start.

“Marry someone you truly love one day. Don’t just sit here and let yourself be used like a fool.”

“Idiot.”

“What?”

“You’re such an idiot.”

“Hey!” Lucion snapped, frowning at her threateningly.

But Edith wasn’t listening. If Lucion had truly found a way to save himself, shouldn’t he be fighting tooth and nail to hold onto it?

‘Why is pitying me? Why is he letting me go?’

Lucion watched Edith’s emotions boil over. When she looked like she was on the verge of tears, he finally stood up from his seat.

“That’s enough. Let’s end this here and head back. I’ll explain everything to the high priest myself.”

He turned to leave, but Edith shot up and grabbed his arm.

“I wasn’t letting myself be used.”

“Get a grip. How long are you going to—!”

“It’s the other way around. I was using your father.”

“What?”

Lucion faltered, surprise flickering across his face. Edith smirked.

Alright. Time to crush that ridiculous misunderstanding of his, once and for all.

So that it can never happen again.

“I asked your father to make me part of the Frost family in exchange for lifting your curse.”

“…”

“I told him to use his money, his influence, whatever it took to get me out of House Clark and make me his daughter-in-law.”

“You…”

“I’m the one who wanted you first, young master. It was my choice to pick you, Lucion Frost.”

Her relentless confession left Lucion visibly shaken, his eyes darting between hers, uncertainty clouding his expression.

Edith tightened her grip on his arm, her voice growing steadier with each word.

“So don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not a victim, and I won’t become miserable because of you. If anything, I’m the one who used you.”

With everything finally out in the open, Edith dropped her head, her breath coming fast and uneven.

For the first time in what felt like forever, the weight in her chest had lifted, making her feel light and free.

“…Hah.”

Lucion’s hollow chuckle broke the silence. Edith looked up, startled.

“You’ve done a good job holding back that temper of yours all this time. And you’re strong, too.”

He glanced down at her hand, which was still gripping his arm with surprising force.

Sheepishly, Edith relaxed her hold and let go, folding her hands politely in front of her.

“I may have been a little blunt, but please, don’t concern yourself with my past anymore.”

Lucion ran a hand through his hair in frustration, his expression unreadable.

“You’re going to regret this. No one who stays by my side ever finds happiness.”

“We’ll see about that,” Edith replied with a bright smile, catching the reluctant note of acceptance in his voice.

Right on cue, the high priest entered the prayer room.

Standing before the altar, Edith leaned closer to Lucion, her voice barely above a whisper.

“You know, young master, you can stand a little closer to me. I promise to make you happy.”

What is happiness, really? Sharing meals, having conversations with each other, staying healthy and safe. That was happiness, wasn’t it?

Edith looked up at him and tossed him a playful wink.

Lucion’s eyes lingered on her for a moment before he slowly turned to face the altar, and Edith did the same.

And so, in that solemn atmosphere, the blessing ceremony began.

“Lady Edith Clark, do you vow to take Lucion Frost as your husband, to stand by his side for the rest of your life?”

“I do,” she answered without hesitation.

Next, it was Lucion’s turn. Edith reached out and took his hand in hers. She could feel his gaze on her, but she kept her eyes forward, resolute.

“Lord Lucion Frost, do you vow to take Lady Edith Clark as your wife, to stand by her side for the rest of your life?”

“I…” Lucion began.
