I Became the Only Cure for My Dying Husband - Chapter 16
Chapter 8.2
But now, seeing the change in him, Edith didn’t know what to say. Lucion, noticing her silence, narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
“You’re not thinking of barging into my room uninvited, are you?”
“Huh? Can I?”
“Of course not! I’ll be back in three days, so don’t even think about it. If you do, you’ll regret it.”
“You promise? You’ll come in three days?”
“I’m always at the library, aren’t I? You’re the one who didn’t show up.”
“You sound like you were upse—”
“Later.”
Lucion cut her off quickly and disappeared before Edith could respond.
“He was upset.”
Edith giggled to herself, clutching the handkerchief he had left behind.
I wonder if we’ve gotten a bit closer because of this.
“I should wash this and give it back.”
Hopefully the bloodstains will come out easily.
Mumbling to herself, Edith headed to the bathroom with Becky hot on her heels.
“Miss Edith, let me do it! Please, can’t you just sit down and rest?”
“I can handle it.”
Despite Becky’s protests, Edith washed the handkerchief herself. She laid it out on the windowsill to dry in the sun.
It almost felt calming.
Resting her chin atop her hands, Edith smiled.
“I hope it dries quickly and gets all soft and fluffy.”
The next day, Edith waited patiently, just like Lucion had instructed.
At least, she was until Simon said something strange while changing her bandages.
“Maybe it’s because you’re young, but you’re healing fantastically. It won’t even leave a scar.”
That was a relief. She didn’t mind the pain, but after seeing how Becky gritted her teeth every time they passed the garden, Edith decided it was worth taking care of herself more carefully.
“But I’m more concerned about Master Lucion.”
Lucion? Edith perked up, her curiosity piqued.
“Why? Is something wrong?”
Simon’s gray eyes widened behind his glasses.
“You didn’t know? Today’s one of those days.”
“Those days?”
Seeing her confusion, Simon scratched his cheek, realizing his mistake.
“…I guess you weren’t aware. Master Lucion suffers from regular bouts of sickness due to his curse. Today is one of those days.”
Regular bouts of sickness? Edith had never heard of this before…
Suddenly, Lucion’s words echoed in her mind.
“Does the young master usually get sick for about three days when it happens?”
“Yes. So you knew about that?”
In an instant, Edith realized what was going on. Lucion had been hiding it from her on purpose, even making sure others didn’t mention it to her.
She shot up from her seat.
“I need to go see him.”
“You won’t be able to. Not even the head of the house is allowed to enter Lucion’s room when he’s like this.”
It didn’t matter. Even if he refused to let her in, she could still release her energy and slip it through the crack underneath the door.
Simon scratched his chin, looking troubled, before handing something to Edith.
“Could you deliver this medicine to Master Lucion for me?”
Simon winked.
“I’m a bit busy at the moment.”
“…Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.”
Edith grabbed the medicine and made a beeline for Lucion’s room.
But as she limped over, Oscar, who was guarding the door, blocked her path.
“I’m sorry, Miss Edith, but I’m afraid I must ask you to leave for today.”
“I brought him some medicine. Can’t I just give it to him?”
“I’m sorry,” Oscar said, shaking his head firmly.
“Then I’ll wait here until he’s better.”
“Miss Edith, if Master Lucion finds out, there’ll be trouble. Please, go back.”
As they argued, a new voice cut in.
“I’m positive I told everyone to keep this a secret. So how did you find out?”
Both of their heads turned, surprised to see Khalid approaching.
“Your Grace.”
“My daughter-in-law seems quite upset.”
And indeed, Edith was biting her lip in frustration. She looked up at Khalid, confused.
“Father, why didn’t you tell me? It’s my job to treat the young master.”
“Lucion specifically told me not to. He threatened to call off the engagement if I did. He’s my son, but honestly…”
Recalling that ordeal, Khalid rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. Then, he left the decision to Edith.
“Do you still want to go in? If you do, he’ll throw a fit and demand to call off the engagement.”
“I don’t care. Open the door, please.”
Seeing the determination in her eyes, Khalid chuckled and patted her head, as though he understood the challenges she was about to face.
“Open it.”
“…Please be careful, Miss Edith.”
Edith nodded at Oscar’s warning, then froze as she saw what was beyond the door.
“What…?”
Her breath caught in her throat at the sight before her.
