He released his grip on the front of my dress and faced Dietrich.

Lord Hyden stammered, his face betraying his shock. But when he met Dietrich’s intense violet gaze, he shrank back.

“Did you hit her?”

He brought me to his quarters and gently set me down on the bed. He then retrieved a small medicine kit from his belongings.
Kneeling at my feet, he examined me closely, as if checking for injuries.
“There’s no need for this, Sir.”
He raised an eyebrow as though questioning my words.
“His Lordship will give me a potion soon. He’s quite particular about any blemishes on my body.”
“There’s a wound here.”
Ignoring my protest, Dietrich took hold of my ankle.
I squinted, surprised, as he carefully placed my foot on his thigh.
As he did, his left sleeve lifted slightly, revealing a white bandage. Was he injured?
Without a word, he applied ointment to the wound on my leg.
“Does the lord often… hit you?”
“He’s just overly… affectionate.”
Hearing it out loud, I realized how absurd it sounded.
But even if someone else were in my shoes, they would have responded similarly. What else could I possibly say?
“Then will you continue… to endure this?”
Dietrich clenched his jaw as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“You’re very kind, my lord.”
“……”
“But it’s a kindness that’s quite useless.”

Dietrich fell silent.
Perhaps he hadn’t thought that far ahead—or if he had, he’d acted impulsively anyway.
“I should go back now. Please step aside, Sir.”
“Then… would it be enough if I took responsibility for you, Emily?”
“…What?”
“I’ll take responsibility. Please… let me.”
Dietrich gripped my hand tightly, as though begging me not to leave.
But that was simply impossible.
Why had I endured these three years here in this castle?
Why had I shown him this side of myself?
Did he think all I wanted was to hear him say he’d take responsibility?
“That won’t do.”
“I can ensure you a life as good as—or better than—the one you’ve had here.”
“I appreciate the thought.”
I pulled my ankle from his grasp. Dietrich looked at his empty hand, defeated, and rose to his feet.
In front of him, I closed the door with a loud slam.
I don’t need your help.
This will all be over soon enough anyway.
