Chapter 50.1
“I’m not a good man.”
He could never let Leilia go.
“Does she have any idea how miserable I felt, watching her try to set me up with my first love?”
She had always lived with an upright heart. And even now, she was the same. So, when the topic of first love came up, he asked her first.
If you found out who my first love was, would you really just let it go? Wouldn’t you try to bring us together?
Leilia couldn’t respond.
I can’t do that.
She should have said it, but the words never left her lips.
“You have no idea how despairing it is for me that you didn’t say those words.”
Cassel tightened his fist.
A breeze swept through the air.
It was sharp and chilling.
9. The Emperor’s Visit
Autumn was approaching. It was the season when the crops ripened and the year’s harvest came to an end. For Leilia, it was a busy time, managing everything as the season progressed. It was also the peak period for the work of the Hyllan Merchant Guild, with tasks piling up explosively.
“Honestly.”
Even though she had been working tirelessly since summer, the busyness hadn’t let up. Leilia rubbed her temples as she reviewed the documents Lucis had sent her.
Ever since the warp gate had been established, people traveled back and forth between the capital and the fiefdoms. The ease of access even encouraged migration to the Balkan territory, largely due to Cassel’s growing reputation for not imposing unfair taxes.
“Cassel.”
As she looked at the documents, his image came to mind, and she lowered her gaze. Placing the pen into the inkwell, she sighed softly.
Ever since she had asked him about his first love, he seemed slightly different.
Recently, he had become unusually obsessed with their time in bed.
‘Why is that?’
He wouldn’t stop until she reached the height of ecstasy. Yet, there was a hint of unease in his expression, as if he were hurting inside.
After dwelling on it for a while, Leilia shook her head.
“His first love.”
Although she couldn’t fully understand what he was thinking, it was clear that the question had unsettled him. He had lost the calmness he once had since then.
“Who was his first love?”
Whoever it was, they had the power to affect Cassel so deeply. A mysterious figure who still held influence over him, even though his heart had leaned toward her.
She almost wished she hadn’t asked.
As she was sorting through her documents, the door opened, and Cassel stepped inside.
“Finished with your training?”
At her question, he gave a nod.
“I’m planning to hold the founding ceremony for the knight order this week.”
Even Leshulean had granted his permission.
Of course, he had initially been reluctant and wary of Cassel’s growing influence, but under public pressure, they had no choice but to concede. After all, he had already given him a modest territory. Refusing to allow him to establish a knight order would’ve been unreasonable.
The knight order was composed of those who had pledged loyalty to Duke Cassel. Many of them were seasoned veterans with remarkable skills from their time on the battlefield.
“I’m ready as well.”
Cassel let out a sigh at Leilia’s words.
“You didn’t need to go to such trouble from the start.”
“Are you talking about the armor?”
She had been preparing to gift custom armor to his subordinates once the knight order was established. She had even gone so far as to commission a master craftsman. Hearing about this, his subordinates had been eagerly and almost obsessively awaiting the arrival of goods from the Hyllan Guild.
“They’ll be here tomorrow.”
Thanks to the warp gate, things had become much faster, which brought a smile to Leilia’s face. Cassel gave her a sideways glance.
“Just take it.”
“Alright.”
While he was familiar with her tendency for grand gestures, he felt a bit uneasy but nodded anyway. He just hoped she wouldn’t go overboard with lavish gifts.

In the opulent imperial office, Leshulean folded his arms and bowed his head in deep thought.
“What should I do?”
Chelias turned his head without a word. Though he understood the emperor’s dilemma, he simply shrugged, offering no advice.
“It’s up to Your Majesty’s judgment.”
“No, give me your opinion.”
“Do you really think you need it?”
At Chelias’s calm response, Leshulean ran a hand roughly through his hair.
Word had reached him that Cassel was forming a knightly order. Since there wasn’t one in the Balkan territory, Cassel had taken it upon himself to establish one with those loyal to him.
Every member of the order was renowned for their accomplishments. Having endured the harsh realities of war, their skills were exceptional. Many of the individuals Leshulean had hoped to reward and retain in the military had instead chosen to follow Cassel. Although the emperor had approved the establishment of the knightly order to align with public opinion, he couldn’t ignore the growing discomfort he felt over Cassel’s expanding influence.
