Chapter 48.1

While riding in the carriage, Dreikan squinted, observing Cassel and Leilia. Even though they didn’t hold hands in public, Cassel’s gaze toward Leilia was filled with undeniable warmth.

‘What is this?’

He thought back to Cassel’s academy days.

The unshakable fortress of the swordsmanship department.

A tree that wouldn’t fall no matter how many times it was struck.

A cold man who would never accept a confession, immediately ended friendships with anyone who confessed to him and drew a hard line, allowing no one beyond the boundary of friendship.

A student with no parents but equipped with the best gear available.

There were countless ways people described Cassel back then. His striking appearance naturally caught attention, but it was his behavior of drawing clear boundaries that made him the talk of the academy.

Particularly, he was cold toward women who wanted to move beyond friendship and become something more. Even with Colia, one of his closest friends, he had agreed to be her partner for the graduation party, but afterward, he never contacted her again. Despite technically being her partner, he hadn’t shared a single dance with her at the party.

Perhaps it was simply because they had been dorm neighbors and spent time together that Dreikan ended up knowing all of this.

However, the way Cassel looked at his wife now was completely different from how he had back then.

As Dreikan stared, still lost in thought, Cassel shifted his gaze. The familiar calm, cool look he directed at him—yes, this was the Cassel he knew.

‘No one would believe this.’

Who could ever imagine him looking at his wife like that?

Dreikan finally broke the silence and spoke to Cassel.

“You’ve changed a lot since your academy days.”

“In what way?”

Cassel responded as if he didn’t understand. His feigned ignorance left Dreikan speechless. He suppressed the urge to shout about how many women Cassel had made cry, including the woman who was now his wife.

“What was Cassel like during his academy days?”

Leilia asked curiously.

Dreikan shifted his focus to her. Her brown hair and dark eyes, tinged faintly with violet, exuded a composed impression. Though she wasn’t strikingly beautiful, she had been praised as one of the top students during her academy years. And when she smiled, there was an undeniable charm about her.

‘Who is she to Cassel, to make him act like this?’

“He was never the kind of man to act this way toward women.”

“This way?”

“What I mean is, he wasn’t the type to treat people kindly.”

At Dreikan’s words, Cassel furrowed his brow.

“Why would I need to be gentle with people who weren’t even my friends?”

“But you still managed to make quite a few cry.”

Leilia’s eyes lit up with interest at Dreikan’s comment.

“My husband told me Lord Dreikan is one of his close friends.”

Cassel’s unexpected statement caught Dreikan off guard.

‘Friends?’

From Cassel’s perspective, maybe that was true. He never noticed how jealous Dreikan was, as they sat side by side, calmly debating magical theories as if nothing was wrong. Of course, those debates with Cassel had taught him a lot, but they also left him frustrated by his own talent, which always seemed to fall short compared to Cassel’s superior theories.

It hadn’t been all good.

Maybe that was why, after graduation, he distanced himself from Cassel. He hated himself for feeling inferior to him.

Now, he could face him with a clearer mind, but back then, it had been a completely different story. His sense of inferiority had been overwhelming.

“Friends.”

If that was how Cassel saw it, Dreikan figured he might as well go along with it. Whatever he felt about the matter was his burden alone, and there was no reason to unload it onto Cassel.

If Cassel remembered him as a friend, then he was content to leave it at that.

“Could you share some stories about Cassel?”

Leilia asked with a bright smile.

When Dreikan gave a small nod, Cassel shot him a warning glance.

“Don’t say anything unnecessary.”

“There’s nothing unnecessary to say, is there?”

He had never dated anyone at the academy, so there was nothing in his past to keep from his wife. At Dreikan’s comment, Cassel paused, thinking for a moment.

“Well, you’d have to actually date someone to have something to hide.”

“That’s true.”

“Don’t worry. I won’t tarnish the reputation of a friend I haven’t seen in a long time.”

Dreikan shrugged his shoulders.

The carriage came to a halt.

Leilia and Cassel stepped out together, arriving at the location of the magic stone. Dreikan, who had already exited the carriage, watched them and let out a quiet sigh.

‘If the women who had loved Cassel in the past saw this, they might shed a tear.’

The device used to measure the magic stone was a large, circular apparatus with a hollow center. Through this empty space, it detected the magical energy confined in the surrounding area.

Due to its massive size, the device required a mage skilled in levitation magic to move it into position.
