The office was opulent. Since the family had once been royalty before participating in the war and becoming a noble house, the interior of the castle was well-furnished. As Leilia glanced around the room, which was decorated as splendidly as a mansion in the capital, she whispered to Cassel.
“I like it here.”
“Would you like to use it as your office?”
“That’s not it.”
Leilia shook her head and whispered to him again.
“I’ll be coming by often since we’ll have a lot of work to do together for a while.”
“The Duchess’s office is even more luxurious. Don’t worry.”
Leilia was happy by Gaen’s words.
“But it must have cost a lot of money to maintain this, right?”
“That’s why there’s not much money left.”
Gaen’s expression darkened.
“Before the Duke passed away, he couldn’t pay the knights’ salaries, so the order was disbanded.”
Leilia was aware of that as well. However, because of it, there was an opportunity for Cassel’s subordinates to rise through the ranks.
“Then, shall we take a look at the ledger?”
Leilia took out the ledger and first examined the details of the assets. Fortunately, there was hardly any debt. The debt had been repaid with the money received from the imperial family when they bought the granary region that had been passed down through the Duchy of Balkan. Nevertheless, there was no good land left in the territory.
There wasn’t much money left, either.
“We have enough to get by for a few years.”
Cassel calculated the funds.
“Hmm.”
Lucis glanced at Leilia.
“But it’s far too insufficient to do anything. I don’t think we have enough money to build a warp right now.”
He assessed the situation calmly.
As they discussed, Gaen quickly and quietly stepped outside. After she left, the serious discussion began.
“For now, I’ll have to build the warp with my personal funds.”
“Not through the Hyllan Association?”
“The Hyllan Merchants Association will handle this matter, but this is still Cassel’s and my territory. If we start using the Merchant Association’s funds, its influence will grow too much, and that could limit Cassel’s standing.”
Lucis murmured regretfully at her words.
“It could have been an opportunity for the Hyllan Merchants Association to expand its power.”
“Let’s be satisfied with what we have for now.”
After saying that, Leilia looked at Cassel. He was quietly watching her and Lucis.
“The Duke’s power must be the strongest in the Duchy.”
He agreed with her words.
“I think it would be better to handle this matter with Leilia’s personal funds rather than with the Hyllan Association.”
As he said this, he pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket.
“What is this?”
Cassel responded casually to Leilia’s question.
“It’s a gift from His Majesty. He said that since I suffered during the war, he wanted to give me a present.”
“Hmm.”
It was a check.
“It should help with building the warp.”
Leilia said with a smile.
They couldn’t help but be conscious of others’ opinions. They must have been concerned that public sentiment would worsen if they gave Cassel such a humble territory and did nothing else for him.
“How much does it cost to build the warp?”
In response to Cassel’s question, Leilia wrote something on a piece of paper for a moment. First, there were the number of magic stones required for the construction, the number of wizards that needed to be hired, and the number of specialized personnel.
“Even if there are magic stones in this land, they can’t be used immediately. It takes over a month to process the magic stones, but the warp needs to be built right away. As quickly as possible in the shortest time.”
So, the amount she calculated was roughly three times the money Cassel received from the Emperor. This amount was equivalent to several years’ worth of the Duchy’s budget.
“Are you really willing to invest this much money so readily?”
“Of course.”
Leilia lifted her teacup.

“It’s the land I’ll be living on in the future.”
Cassel’s eyes widened upon hearing Leilia’s words.
“Even so, spending this much money isn’t an easy thing to do.”
At his words, she lifted her teacup.
“You’re my husband.”
Leilia recalled the story he had told her in the dwarven village. Thinking about those words filled her with happiness once again.
“I have no intention of leaving my husband poor.”
Lucis laughed silently.
“You should become wealthy, Cassel.”
Leilia smiled brightly.
“This tea doesn’t taste good. Would you make it for me, Cassel?”
Cassel was stunned for a moment at her words before he laughed.
“All right.”
He smiled and stood up from his seat.
Sunlight streamed in through the window.
Summer was just getting started.
