Chapter 18.1

In the distance, the sound of fireworks filled the air, signaling Cassel’s arrival in the capital. The streets were alive with celebrations, and as the soldiers’ procession continued, the sky was adorned with colorful bursts of light, accompanied by the cheers of the people.

Amidst all the celebration and sharing their blessings, Leilia found herself standing alone.

Renowned for her beauty, the Young Lady Carania stood there with a bouquet of flowers in her hand. Her cheeks were flushed, and her gaze was fixed ahead as if she were waiting to welcome Cassel. Even though being treated as an outcast was something she was accustomed to, since Cassel had treated her tenderly from the beginning, Leilia couldn’t help but hope for more from him.

A kind and caring husband who had refused to divorce…

Although she knew she was going to face his mistress, she couldn’t suppress the glimmer of hope in her heart. Even if he didn’t love her, she held onto the hope that he wouldn’t mistreat her either, and soon, that kind of hope had taken root in her heart.

‘I don’t want it to fall apart.’

…If he didn’t accept her bouquet of flowers, she would be a little sad.

As she waited for the procession to arrive, thoughts of Cassel filled her mind. The countless portraits she had seen in newspapers flashed before her eyes… it wouldn’t be a lie to say she missed him. Fortunately, the procession was now visible from her vantage point.

Cassel was at the forefront.

‘…Cassel.’

The wind gently blew.

His gaze, as he led the horse forward, seemed sharp, while his neatly combed silver hair was just like when they exchanged marriage vows. In addition, his red eyes were staring straight ahead. He seemed acute as if he had suffered a lot in the war.

Behind him, there was a woman—the very same beautiful woman she had seen in portraits and the subject of rumors as his supposed mistress.

Her name was Calia.

‘Still, she wasn’t by Cassel’s side…’

Leilia clenched her fist in her trembling hand.

As the procession came to an end, the horses stopped. Cassel dismounted from his horse. His gaze seemed to be directed towards her in the distance. The moment his eyes met hers, Leilia blushed for a moment.

‘Cassel.’

She called his name.

The white accessories matched well with the white suit that she had sent in advance, and they suited him better than expected.

Leilia smiled briefly as she gazed at him.

Under the serene blue sky, the clouds drifted leisurely as a gentle spring breeze caressed the surroundings. Cassel, accompanied by Calia, walked forward, bowing his head respectfully as he approached the Emperor.

Leilia watched the scene quietly.

As he approached, Leshulean quickly embraced him and exclaimed loudly.

“Welcome back, my true son!”

Perhaps it was only natural to treat Cassel, who was the illegitimate son, this way when he became a war hero as he was receiving the attention of the people.

As she thought so, Leilia held the bouquet in her hand.

“It’s prepared to celebrate your return.”

When the Emperor finished his words, Carania stepped forward and held out the bouquet of flowers.

‘…I wonder if he’ll accept both hers and mine.’

After all, it would be difficult to refuse what the Emperor offered publicly.

Leilia pondered as she observed his actions. However, at that moment, Cassel gazed at where she was standing before his eyes slowly lowered and lingered on her fingers. It seemed like he was staring at the bouquet she was holding. Wthout accepting the bouquet from Carania, he soon turned his eyes back to Leshulean and opened his mouth.

“This bouquet would suit an unmarried knight.”

The sunlight touched his hair.

Leilia quickly realized that he was looking for her.

In front of all the nobles, she held the bouquet and walked out slowly. Cassel’s eyes widened as he saw the beautifully dressed Leilia.

“Congratulations on your return.”

As she handed him the bouquet, he smiled from the corner of his eyes and accepted her bouquet.

“The bouquet is beautiful, but my wife is even more beautiful.”

“I put in a lot of effort to prepare it.”

“It seemed so.”

Contrary to his sharp appearance that had been honed by suffering during the war, his voice sounded affectionate. Then, he approached closer and took her hand in his.

“Why are you at the back?”

When he asked in a public setting like this, Leshulean’s face turned red as he had worked hard to arrange the seating.

‘Cassel…’

Cassel, right now, in front of the Emperor…

“It’s because it feels uncomfortable sitting in the front row.”

As Leilia quickly replied, trying to divert the conversation, Cassel nodded before he bowed his head to the Emperor.

“I’ll stop by the mansion and attend the banquet with my wife.”

For a moment, Leilia thought she had misheard.

In such a public setting, he stated that he would attend with his ‘wife.’ The significance of his words was not lost on anyone present. It meant that Cassel officially recognized her as his wife and had decided not to pursue the divorce that was recommended by the imperial family.

Leshulean was well aware of it, too.
