Kylian closed his eyes, trying to hold onto Anais’s voice that had once soothed him to sleep.

However, ever since she left that day, it hadn’t been easy.

“I love you, Kylian.”

The voice echoing in his mind was Lilith’s, yet it felt like Anais’s.

In that way, he drifted into a light sleep and began to dream.

* * *

“Kylian.”

When he opened his eyes, he found himself in the bedroom behind the audience chamber. Holding a brush and smiling was Anais.

“Wife.”

He felt dazed, as if he had just awakened from a deep slumber. Then he noticed the light streaming through the blue stained glass, reflecting off Anais’s hair, which appeared momentarily blue but was actually platinum blonde. His heart raced.

“Wife, what are you doing…?”

“Kylian, you fell asleep again.”

The tip of the brush Anais held was stained with ink. He wondered if she had doodled on his face again. But why like this?

“Anais…!”

“Uh… Kylian?”

As he hugged her tightly, the brush tumbled from her hand and rolled onto the bed. The shifting mattress caused the ink she had carefully placed to spill over, staining the bed sheet black.

“Kylian…! The ink! The ink…!”

“Huuh… Wife… huh…”

As he clung to her, crying, Anais stiffened in surprise. Then, gently stroking his head, she asked,

“What’s wrong? Did you have a bad dream?”

“…Yes.”

Slowly, he released his arms from around her and tried to see her face. As always, her eyes sparkled with a unique brilliance.

“You are truly my wife.”

“Now that I’m the Empress, are you still going to call me Wife?”

“Yes. Anais, you will forever be my wife.”

She gazed at him who had tears in his eyes, wiping his damp cheeks.

“What kind of dream made you cry like this? It’s heartbreaking.”

Kylian took in Anais’s image again: her bright golden hair, her ocean-like blue eyes, and the earnest expression she had as she looked at him.

“I dreamed that I committed a grave wrong against you.”

“Really? What kind of wrong?”

Anais wiped the tears streaming down Kylian’s face with her finger. As he looked directly into her eyes, the tightness in his chest gradually filled with relief.

“If you decide to forgive me, I will tell you.”

“Alright. I’ll forgive you. What was the wrong you did? Did you perhaps take a concubine?”

“What…!”

“Hahaha. That’s not it.”

Seeing Anais roll her eyes and nervously chew her lips, Kylian let out a deep sigh of relief.

“No matter what, how could I take a concubine, even in a dream?”

“Well… that’s true, but who knows? It’s a dream, after all.”

“If I were to have such a filthy dream, I’d rather never sleep again.”

“I take that back!”

The flustered Anais grasped his lips. When she saw his lips puffed up like a duck’s bill, she couldn’t help but laugh.

“Now tell me.”

“Weff.”

As Anais giggled, she released her grip on his lips.

“What kind of dream was it? I’m really curious.”

Kylian suddenly remembered that she was sitting on top of him, making his ears burn. He shifted Anais off him and sat her beside him.

However, Anais frowned and climbed back onto his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“Let’s talk like this.”

“Then I definitely can’t say anything.”

“Why not?”

“Because all my thoughts go to you, and I can’t think straight.”

“Still, you should tell me. You said you did something bad in the dream.”

He didn’t hate her being like this; in fact, it was a bit too pleasing. He considered bowing his head but was taken aback by how her outfit didn’t match that of an Empress. The bedroom they had made behind the audience chamber was intended for resting without changing clothes.

“Why are you dressed so lightly, Wife?”

“What are you talking about? Don’t you remember that I’ve been here since last night?”

“Ah… is that so?”

Kylian felt flustered. This was a place meant for resting, and he had ended up sleeping here.

“Come on. It feels like you keep trying to change the subject. Do you think I’m going to let that slide?”

Anais pouted and looked directly at him.

Feeling utterly defeated, Kylian tried to glance over her shoulder. Blurring his focus, he clenched his fists to calm himself.

Kylian suddenly realized how precious the moment was with Anais sitting in front of him, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. He eventually lowered his head, overwhelmed by the profound sense of loss and guilt rising in his chest.

“I didn’t recognize the wife… huh…”

“Why are you crying again, Kylian?”

Just as he was about to speak, tears burst forth again, preventing him from continuing.

“I was wrong. I was wrong, Anais. I’m truly sorry.”

As he spoke through his tears, Anais’s expression suddenly turned cold.

“Does saying sorry change anything? I’ve already left.”

In that instant, her face morphed into Lilith’s.

“What is this…!”

Kylian panicked and tried to push her away. As he did, Lilith’s violet eyes turned bright red, and she tightened her grip around his neck.

“Anais has abandoned you, Kylian. You made her leave.”

“Ugh…!”

“You’ve been completely forsaken.”

Watching her mouth stretch grotesquely, splitting up to her ears, Kylian felt his vision blurring.

“Hah….”

And then he woke up from the dream.

He was drenched in cold sweat, as if he had been caught in the rain.

“Wife….”

As soon as he opened his eyes, he groaned from the pain and clutched his chest tightly.
