Chapter 31

After going back and forth several times with an expression of disbelief, he checked the food on the table again.

“Ian.”

Monica opened her mouth again with a trembling voice, finding it awkward that he was not looking at her. But he still didn’t look at her.

Seriously, what should I say about this feeling?

Having never been formally educated, there were many words I did not know. So I don’t know how best to describe this feeling.

It was just like stepping into the warm water slowly from the tip of your toes. The pleasantly moderate hot water wrapped my cold body pleasantly and pulled me in.

Unlike me, who was relaxed in the fuzzy mood, Ian didn’t have an aloof expression, but rather a stiff face that looked like he was angry. And he spoke.

“How dare you feed this to the woman who will bear my child?”

At the low echo of his voice, the dinner hall sank into a heavy silence. I could see the chief handmaid’s face who was in my view turning white.

I can’t believe I’m seeing that face.

It’s quite terribly sweet.

I slowly moved my gaze. Everyone who had laughed at me from the chief handmaid was trembling.

Seeing him react in that way, I was swept with a feeling  of sweetness, but it was only for a very short time. That feeling soon became bittersweet, one that was difficult to accurately describe.

“I, Ian…”

Monica’s voice calling him sounded almost like a cry.

“Is there anyone who can explain this situation to me?”

Ian didn’t look at Monica. With a cold expression, he met the handmaid’s eyes one after another.

When the employees met his eyes, they all bowed their heads together with the sound of them cowering.

It was a rather strange scene.

To me, those who kept their heads up stiffly succumbed like withered flower stalks when they met his gaze.

They collapsed as if his gaze was taking away moisture.

The chief handmaid didn’t bow her head like the other handmaids did, but she stood tall with an expression she hadn’t seen before.

Maybe it was because she was in a position where she couldn’t evade responsibility as easily as others.

“Speak.”

He, too, must be well aware of this fact. That the chief handmaid was the one who could convey the current situation more accurately than anyone else.

But she could hardly open her closed lips. She seemed to want to part her lips, which were as tight as shellfish, but she was scared, and all she could do was stand upright.

“Ian!”

Monica couldn’t stand it any longer, so she called out to him. Ian looked at Monica, shifting his gaze away from the chief handmaid, and muttered in a low voice.

“Monica, will you explain?”

“…Ian.”

I involuntarily scoffed at his question. Was that what you call a question?

He must have heard the very faint laugh coming from me, and he turned his head and looked down at me.

I did not think to move as his blatant gaze was embedded like a blade. Monica jumped up, as if surprised by the sight, and hurried to come toward us.

Then Ian raised his finger and stopped her. His eyes were still fixed on me.

“No one move. No one can escape responsibility.”

“Ian! I just…“

“Be quiet, Monica. This is an insult to the heir of our family. Food that even beggars wouldn’t eat…”

Since he was a nobleman from birth, he didn’t seem to know much about it. But for any other person who didn’t have anything to eat right away, this was no different from a scrumptious banquet.

If I had received food like this on the street, I would have said thank you several times.

It wasn’t that I didn’t eat it because I hated the food until now.

I just didn’t like them trying to crush me with food, and I didn’t eat it because I had no reason to be obedient to them anymore.

As I sighed and didn’t say a word, Monica called me with a glad look in her eyes.

“Aunt! Say something. Aren’t you craving this because you miss it? That’s why I brought it to you. Why aren’t you saying anything? By any chance… Did you do it on purpose to put me in trouble?”

This was something Jessie once said. Monica looks completely different from inside the house and outside.

With such a duplicitous attitude, Jessie used to say, ‘The Miss is really noble.’

Was this the noble look she was talking about?

So, Ian, is he also treating me with a duplicitous attitude?

Those who were born nobles and those who weren’t, may face each other in a position I can’t understand for the rest of my lives.

So I don’t have to try to understand anymore.

I won’t endure it any longer.

“…Young Lord.”

As I breathed heavily, I called out to him in a low, dying voice. This was not what I intended.

After starving for several days, there was no way I would have strength.

Ian immediately recognized my small voice and looked at me. I raised my head stiffly like the chief handmaid and asked him.

“I would like to add a clause to the contract. It is to guarantee my safety.”

“……”

He didn’t answer, but he listened to me quietly. I tried to resent him and keep away from him, but funny enough, courage welled up in his appearance.

“I haven’t been fed for several days. I tried to go to the main building, but I couldn’t do it because I didn’t have the strength… So I felt that my life was being threatened.”

With my words, the sound of sharp gasps echoed around me. Ian’s eyes widened with a violent glimmer.

He must have been unable to contain his anger, and pheromones leaked out in an instant. He was a man who obsessively controlled his pheromones, so this was uncharacteristic of him.

Was he that agitated? He shouldn’t be interested in me at all, so why was he acting like this?

When I smelled his pheromones, I felt a sense of peace in mind and body. As expected, was an omega an existence that could not be separated from an alpha?

As the tension eased, my eyes blurred. However, I squeezed my last strength and delivered the words.

“…I hate this kind of food.”

It was a refutation to what Monica had said. Who in the right mind would crave this kind of food?
