Hana turned her head. The void, which felt like it would stretch endlessly downward, now had solid ground beneath her.

She stood tall, firmly planted somewhere in the middle of the void.

“Void.”

She then turned her gaze to meet Void’s eyes, who had been standing beside her for some time.

Ever since she admitted she liked Weed’s appearance, Void had been mimicking that very form. In stark contrast to her last memory of Weed in tears, Void’s smiling face now felt strangely unfamiliar.

“…Are you saying I possess divine power like Weed? Why?”

“I told you, didn’t I? In this world, countless lives must pay a price. The fact that the will of God resides within you is proof of your worth as a payment. An ordinary life that jumps into the void to die is merely a meaningless death.”

“And yet I’m still considered an ordinary human? I didn’t even know I could wield such power!”

Void nodded without hesitation.

“You are indeed an ordinary human. It’s just that your body wasn’t a vessel capable of enduring the will of God until the right time came. Knowing that using power would lead to bodily collapse, your body likely engaged in its own form of self-defense.”

The concept of self-defense made sense.

It was true. Right now, Hana was barely holding on, thanks to Weed alleviating her pain, though the agony she felt every time she used her power was significant. Naturally, her body resisted the pain, avoiding the use of her power. Perhaps she had instinctively forgotten that method altogether.

It was possible that unconsciously using her power to grow the tree was also a form of self-defense.

“Then, why does it hurt…?”

“As you exert your power, your body adapts, eventually starting to distort beyond its limits.”

Void explained calmly, and it made some sense. If that were the case, it would also explain why her body had been dying in her original world. It wasn’t a divine disease. The reason her organs had been failing one by one was connected to that.

“That’s all.”

“Then, what about my biological parents? Who…”

Hana hesitated and held her breath.

“Hah.”

She clenched her fist tightly. The pressure caused her body to tremble slightly.

A hollow laugh escaped her lips.

The body changes to align with its power. It was said that it would inevitably change.

Hana bore no resemblance to her biological parents. This raised suspicions, eventually leading to a paternity test. The results revealed that neither her biological mother nor her biological father was a match. Next, the hospital grew suspicious. They insisted there had been no errors in the handling of the child, and when presented with the documentation, Hana’s parents became entangled in endless disputes over the results.

If Void’s words were true, then what human could share blood with a body transformed by divine power? In that world, this was a question they would never be able to answer.

After a long pause, Hana spoke, her tone tinged with cynicism.

“So those people were my biological parents.”

A laugh escaped her.

It was absurd. They had given birth to her and raised her, yet they couldn’t recognize her. Instead, they doubted and resented her, eventually even attempting to kill her. The ridiculousness of it all made Hana laugh helplessly for quite some time.

She cupped her face with both hands, the initial shock shifting into a deep sense of injustice that wrapped around her.

The so-called will of God had proven useless.

Even if it existed, it brought her no benefits. She had never been able to properly utilize her abilities, and instead, it seemed like all the misfortunes she had experienced since childhood stemmed from it.

The same was true for Weed. Despite being the most radiant golden tree in this world, he had never fully embraced his power. He wasn’t happy. He simply bestowed grace upon the land. And now, she understood why she had always felt such a connection to him.

“Haha…”

This world, which she had come to by accident, was pitiful and sad.

From its very creation, it had been fundamentally flawed, demanding countless lives to pay the price. And those countless lives couldn’t be ordinary; they had to compensate for their deficiencies with an exceptionally strong life force.

It seemed like a resilient life force. Despite being threatened by so many lives, she had still managed to survive and stand here, as if it were a fate ordained by God.

“That so-called god is really irresponsible.”

“Excuse me?”

Void’s expression seemed unusually vacant.

“God created this pathetic world and abandoned it. God shifted the responsibility onto the creatures. Why should innocent lives pay the price? Why…?”

“That’s not true.”

Void immediately denied it.

“What do you mean it’s not true?”

“It’s not a fact.”

Hana was taken aback. Was he openly lying right now? But Void didn’t lie. There was something off about his focus.

“Which creature in this world has paid the price?”

Hana felt bewildered.

No creature in this world had paid the price. That much was certain. In this world, no one had been born truly deserving. The only one with golden eyes was Weed. He was unique.

“You can’t go. That… was originally my duty. It was my role. You must not die. It was meant to be me. Me…”

The words Weed had cried and pleaded with echoed in her mind. The one who claimed to have the only right to exist—the primordial tree—had survived all this time.

“This world was created imperfectly. It was made by a trivial being who, by chance, gained power and was consumed by arrogance. Because it was a world shaped by a young god who didn’t even understand that power, it was destined to be flawed. It had to be sustained by countless strong life forces and noble hearts.”

Everything Void said was true. No creature in this world had paid the price.

The sacrifices meant to pay the price had been summoned from another dimension.
