Chapter 106.1

Nothing but luck stood in front of Eden and Richard until they entered the Actilus.

It seemed that ‘coincidentally,’ the route they took was lax in checking, and they would ‘accidentally’ encounter comrades who offered help when they were in trouble. In addition, negotiations, which they were uncertain would succeed, coincided well due to mutual interests.

Eden thought it was, technically, ‘Richard’s luck.’

From the experiences of the past few weeks, Richard seemed like someone who would roll a six on at least eight out of ten dice throws. It was as if the mysteries of the world favored Richard.

Perhaps his luck extended to the sudden weather conditions this year, preventing Raniero from striking Sombinia.

As a person who was lucky in everything, Richard was optimistic and cheerful. He was also considerate. Because of that, during their journey together, Eden’s anxiety, which had been weighing heavily on them, seemed to dissipate.

It seemed like everything was going to be fine.

Eden enjoyed the tranquility that came from uncharacteristic optimism.

However, it was short-lived.

After a few weeks of good fortune, dreadful news followed.

The Empress had died.

Despite the vigorous journey away from the Temple of Tunia and traveling as hard as they could for several weeks, the news of the Empress’s death struck heavily as they entered Actilus.

The identity of the body, an open secret within the Actilus imperial court, wasn’t leaked outside the imperial palace.

Therefore, Eden had no choice but to believe that Angelica was dead.

The goal of the coalition forces, including Richard, was the collapse of Actilus and the alleviation of global tensions. However, Eden’s goal was different. His sole goal was to return home.

When the blood of Actilla was ready, the door to the old sanctuary had to be opened with the sword of Tunia.

It may be possible for Actilus to collapse without Raniero’s death, albeit a rare chance. Still, the only one who could prepare Actilla’s blood was the Saintess of Tunia, Angelica. And in this strange and unfamiliar world, she was the only one who could even slightly empathize with him.

‘Why did she die? Who killed her?’

Two questions dominated his every minute, every second. Did she die from weakness? But she wasn’t that frail.

Did the Emperor kill her?

No, if he were going to kill her, he would have already done so at the Temple of Tunia.

Then, was it another faction? There is a possibility. From the perspective of the high-ranking powers in Actilus, Angelica was a thorn in their side.

‘…So, was it an assassination?’

If Angelica was truly dead, he needed to leave Actilus immediately. Giving up on returning home and accepting his identity as ‘Eden’ in this world would be the best course of action.

Nevertheless, he couldn’t easily say that he would leave. He just kept pondering over and over in his mind like a loose screw. So even while others at the base of operations didn’t like him for spoiling the mood, Eden wasn’t even aware of this fact.

It was because Richard had covered for him.

Even now, Richard was the only one who took care of his meals, even though most of the time, Eden remained motionless with the utensils in his hands, lost in thought.

It was the same now.

The young lord, who had been filling his stomach with uncharacteristically loud noises for a noble boy, glanced at Eden, who remained motionless like a statue. Perhaps because he was slowly getting warmer inside, the sight of the young man sitting motionless became increasingly annoying to him.

The young lord tugged at Richard’s sleeve.

“Why is he like that?”

“You have a bad mouth.”

At Richard’s remark, the young nobleman wrinkled his nose in disdain. Though his heart felt a pang of guilt, his pride as the eldest son of the Duchy of Nerma didn’t allow him to simply acknowledge it and bowed his head.

“Well… What, is something bad happening?”

“Can’t you be polite?”

“Hey.”

The young lord, who had quickly adjusted his tone as if he might receive a sweet dessert, inwardly grumbled about the unnecessary fuss over something so small.

‘If my father were here, everyone would be kissing my shoes.’

The young lord scratched the bottom of his dish with a pouty face. Perhaps interpreting the child’s childish inner turmoil differently, Richard spoke in a slightly softened tone.

“It seems our brother’s heart is wounded because of the news of the Empress’s passing.”

The gentle probing carried a clear intention. Since he had received an answer, some of the young lord’s naive curiosity was alleviated, and he wouldn’t pry further because the story was too heavy.

It was an adult-like, elegant manner.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn from Richard’s calculations. It was because the child in front of him raised his eyes and countered.

“The Empress isn’t dead?”

Richard awkwardly chuckled at his words.

“Is that what they say among children?”

The young lord became very upset with Richard, who treated it as a rumor that the children were gossiping about.

“No, it was the fake empress who entered the coffin. My mother told my father that, so it must be true.:

Up until then, Richard had dismissed the young lord’s words as inconsequential, and Eden was just staring at his cold food, listening absentmindedly to the conversation between the two. The self-conscious young lord couldn’t bear such an atmosphere. Eventually, in a fit of frustration, he blurted out what he had kept tightly sealed until now.

“It’s true! My mother is Dorothea Nerma, the head chambermaid of the Empress’s palace! I’m putting the honor of our duchy on the line! Don’t disrespect me!”

The moment those words fell, Eden’s eyes, which had been staring at the bowl, finally moved.
