Chapter 95.1

Raniero, who was freed from Actilla’s punishment, momentarily forgot who he was for a moment.

What had struck him was such intense agony.

He sat there blankly as fragments of a porcelain vase had found their way into his clothes, stabbing him sharply and uncomfortably.

Even though he managed to raise his upper body, his mind was foggy. He tried asking the person next to him who they were and why they were there, but the answers didn’t register properly. Then, from across the room, someone’s voice could be heard, and the person next to him quickly got up and moved away.

Throughout this sequence of events, Raniero’s head continued to spin. The sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway as the person left the room, walking down the hallway on their heels. Perhaps the emotions were a little heightened, but the speed was difficult to be considered dignified.

He ran his hand through his hair once more.

Only then did things seem to come into focus. Over there, next to the door, stood Angelica. She clung to the wall and stared aimlessly beyond the door. It felt like her lips, which she had bitten so hard, would burst and bleed at any moment.

He kept her in his sight in silence.

Feeling his gaze, Angelica turned back at him. Her complexion changed rapidly. It flushed red, then drained of color, turning pale. Her legs were also trembling, threatening to give way at any moment if he did anything wrong.

Raniero, who hadn’t been able to think of anything until then, slowly recalled a sentence.

‘My wife is weak and fearful.’

He staggered to his feet, feeling his body weighed a thousand pounds. His fingertips didn’t even twitch. Afraid that if he took a wrong step, he might crumble, he stood still for a moment.

His gaze remained fixed on Angelica.

Despite the fact that he couldn’t remember well what had happened, he felt like he needed to reassure her that everything that was scary was now over and that it was okay now.

That way, she wouldn’t run away again.

Raniero took a step. In truth, his movements were too hesitant to be interpreted that way. It was more like he dragged his toes a few centimeters forward. The next moment, he could see a conflicted look appear on Angelica’s face. Amidst the predominant feeling of fear, he could perceive the smallest, most subtle fragment of concern.

Who was she worried about?

He barely managed to lift his heavy arms and stretched out his hand toward her. At that moment, Angelica’s expression changed as if she had been doused with ice water. She turned contemplative and fled beyond the door before the sound of footsteps faded into the distance.

With nowhere to go, his hands dropped limply downward.

Raniero stood there, alone.

The pieces of the porcelain vase crunched beneath his feet, and his face and hands felt bitterly cold. The fragments collided and separated underfoot, emitting an irritating sound.

He looked down at his feet.

The vase lay shattered beyond recognition. It was like the relationship between Raniero and Angelica. No, in fact, it was broken even beyond repair. It had been shattered like this from the beginning. Until then, he had only seen the vase in his sight.

He staggered out of the room.

A laugh escaped him.

Count Fallon, who returned home, frowned arrogantly.

“Bring me a drink. Something strong!”

He snapped at the butler, who was accepting his coat as if he were taking out his frustrations on him for nothing. In the meanwhile, Countess Fallon, who had been upstairs getting ready and reading, came down when she heard her husband’s voice.

“Why are you so angry?”

Count Fallon, who had been standing proudly with his hands on his hips, seemed about to explain the situation to his wife, but perhaps realizing that there were many eyes watching, he quickly took her by the arm and led her upstairs. After entering Countess Fallon’s room and locking the door, he seated his wife in front of the dressing table and ran his hand through his hair.

“His Majesty doesn’t seem like himself.”

At those words, the Countess’s eyes sharpened.

Count Fallon nervously tapped the surface of the dressing table with his fingernails.

“A minor rebellion has erupted in the southern border zone. In fact, this isn’t the first time. Local friction has been ongoing, far from the capital.”

The Countess felt a slight shiver down her spine.

The rise of a rebellion against the imperial family was by no means a trivial matter.

Actilus was a theocratic state, and Raniero was the only connection to the Gods. Although there were those referred to as priests for convenience, their position was only a nominal title given to them for the sake of protocol. Therefore, the weakening of Raniero’s authority directly translated to a weakening of Actilus’s authority.

Perhaps the Count shared the same thought, as his complexion wasn’t good.

“One of the causes of the problem is that His Majesty has been away for a long time.”

“I suppose so.”

Countess Fallon sighed and stroked her cheek. The Count continued his words as he absentmindedly slammed his wife’s dressing table lightly with his fist.

“In such a situation, shouldn’t His Majesty personally go to the southern rebellion area, display his military prowess, and suppress those wretched individuals?”
