Try Begging - Chapter 156.2
“Grace wasn’t involved in that at all.”
“How can you be sure if you weren’t there?”
Joe sighed deeply and reluctantly opened up.
“The adults used to talk about that night sometimes. Grace’s name never came up. Besides, she was just eleven then. Still crazy about merry-go-rounds and playing house, way too young for her age.”
“I know that.”
Even though he knew, he had doubted her… He doubted her apologies and explanations to the very end.
Grace was a victim, too, no different from him.
With eyes tightly shut, suppressing the rage he didn’t know where to direct, her brother’s voice carried a detectable hint of suspicion.
“Why are you asking this?”
As Leon opened his eyes, the other stared back at him as if he were strange. It was clear he had been unaware of Leon’s long-standing connection to Grace since childhood.
“It’s not your concern.”
“Are you trying to find Grace?”
Leon wasn’t in the mood for idle chitchat, though he couldn’t ignore this question. He desperately needed someone to help in his search for her.
“Yes.”
The other narrowed his eyes in incomprehension.
“Why?”
Why he must find her, that simple question sharpened every reason from the simple to the complex, piercing his heart, and Leon found himself momentarily lost for words. After coming to his senses, he was about to dismissively reply that it was none of Joe’s business when he was interrupted.
“Did something you did cause my sister to end up like this?”
Like this.
“This disgusting creature!”
As Leon scowled, a fist flew across the table.
Wham.
Jonathan Riddle Junior’s fist struck Leon Winston’s left jaw. In that instant, Campbell, who had been standing behind his superior, paused abruptly.
‘Why?’
With a punch like that, the Major could have easily dodged or blocked.
‘Why didn’t he avoid it?’
As the onlooker and even the puncher were stunned, the person who got hit seemed unbothered. Leon was deep in thought alone and then muttered something indecipherable.
“No.”
It wasn’t until when the Major let out a dissatisfied sigh that Campbell came to his senses and restrained Jonathan Riddle Junior, handcuffing him.
“Major, are you alright?”
Campbell asked belatedly, but his superior responded unexpectedly.
“I thought it would feel similar… but your fist is weaker than your sister’s.”
There was a tone of disappointment as if he had wanted to be hit by that missing woman.
“Well, the punch might not be similar, but rushing into things without understanding their own situation is.”
Leon chuckled while biting on his cigar, and the woman’s brother struggled in restraints.
“My sister is innocent! If there is any blame, it’s on our parents! Why take revenge on Grace? What has she ever done?”
It wasn’t revenge. Well, maybe once or twice, it was. Perhaps even more often. Now, to deny that affection had at times outweighed hate in his judgment of her would be foolish.
“No. You’re already known as a notorious devil, so what do I expect? Blame the ones who sent my sister to the devil.”
Joe grimaced, spewing curses through clenched teeth.
“D*mn it… My mother hoped Grace would not repeat the same fate….”
At that moment, as Leon was lighting his cigar, his expression soured. Comparing the miserable life and death of Angela Riddle to his woman irritated him further. It was even more unpleasant to hear Jonathan Riddle categorize him as if they were similar.
“I won’t repeat it.”
He wouldn’t exploit her. Moreover, he was still determined to give her everything he had.
“If you just cooperate with me, it won’t happen.”
Joe, who had been resting his forehead on the table’s edge, snorted sarcastically and looked up to challenge him.
“Why would I help you if I were in my right mind?”
“I’m the only one who can keep your sister safe.”
“Keep her safe? Haha…”
His laugh was full of scorn.
“Entrusting jewels to a thief, that makes no sense. Oh, and by the way, Grace doesn’t need your so-called protection.”
The devil seemed to catch the deeper meaning in the rejection as his eyes grew sharp. Knowing it was futile to argue, Joe decided to feign and confide while mocking his opponent.
“…With that money, she doesn’t need anyone’s help. She might have already gone far away. So, just keep your revenge to a minimum and leave her alone.”
When Joe mentioned that his mother had left Grace a substantial inheritance, the reaction from the devil was unexpected.
