Chapter 28. The Royalist Wife

<Did I tell an unnecessary lie, Lady Perpetua?>

<You wouldn’t have lied if you didn’t think it would work, right? They believed you.>

<…But what if the military police go to Wigmore and investigate the deceased?>

<Wigmore is under the jurisdiction of the border guard. The military police knows well that poking around there wouldn’t benefit anyone.>

Then Perpetua added,

<And I hate getting involved in troublesome things because of my niece and her husband. If it’s necessary, I’ll make sure the undertaker keeps quiet. If Freddie paid for it, he can afford a little extra service.>

<Thank you.>

<It’s best you don’t worry about this anymore.>

<I need to go to Swinton.>

<Didn’t you just say you liked being at Rochepolie?>

<There’s something I need to do there.>

<Fine, do as you please.>

Deirdre hurriedly prepared for her trip.

It hadn’t been long since Lady Heather was found dead, and the family was arrested on false charges. Heather had also been pursued by the military until her death. So, it had to be related to the child that she was carrying. That was the only conclusion she could come to.

How many powerful people could move the military police in pursuit of the child, or the child’s mother? There might be ten, or maybe fifteen if the scope is widened, but considering what had happened to Count Holborn, that number narrowed down to just one.

Deirdre clasped her trembling hands together.

‘…Christian.’

Since Viscount Darnell had never been to Holborn, there would be no evidence. Without evidence, anyone could guess that Count Holborn was framed.

However, the fact that Heather Glenwell, the Count’s daughter, died frozen in Rochepolie, and that Darnell had been in Rochepolie, not Holborn, was known only to her and Frederick.

She wondered if she should tell anyone. If she did, perhaps they could save the Count and Countess Glenwell…

Deirdre hurried toward Swinton, saving time by stopping only briefly at an inn. Thanks to the brief break in the weather and lack of snow, she arrived at the townhouse after six days.

Frederick wasn’t home.

Sir Mark Hartley, who had come to greet the Countess, said Frederick had gone to the club to play billiards.

She sighed, but held it in because of the Baronet’s presence. Frederick couldn’t resist billiards or poker.

“I heard Lady Rochepolie was coming, but you’ve arrived earlier than expected.”

Deirdre didn’t quite catch the Baronet’s greeting.

“I hurried here. By the way, have there been any new updates on Count and Countess Holborn?”

“Oh.”

The Baronet’s usually kind face darkened.

“They were recently transferred to Stoneshield. The trial was conducted privately.”

Stoneshield was the political prison where Viscount Darnell had been held.

Deirdre’s heart sank.

“Already? But… did they find any evidence?”

“I’m not sure about that.”

Sir Mark Hartley answered cautiously.

Frederick didn’t return until after 10 p.m.

He carried a faint scent of alcohol, one that even cologne couldn’t hide. Despite his slightly flushed face, he wore a neat evening coat with a satin collar, his golden hair falling just untamed enough to match the look.

He seemed in high spirits.

As he got out of the carriage, he was happy to see his wife waiting at the entrance.

“Oh, Deirdre. Finally back from Swinton. How is Aunt?”

“Lady Perpetua sends her regards. But there’s something I need to tell you.”

She whispered so that Kingsley, who was standing behind, couldn’t hear.

“Did you get my letter?”

“Of course I did. But, honestly, I couldn’t make sense of it…”

Deirdre took her husband’s hand and led him upstairs.

She had the butler leave, and as she helped him out of his coat, she quickly explained the reason for her trip to Swinton.

The identity of the person they had buried, the false charges against Count Glenwell, and her suspicions about the scoundrel who had impregnated Heather.

A confused expression appeared on Frederick’s handsome face.

“So… what you’re saying is, the King… did that to Lady Heather? I don’t understand why you’re saying it that way.”

Deirdre didn’t get angry. This man’s mind wasn’t the quickest, so it wasn’t surprising that he didn’t understand right away.

“Think carefully, Frederick. Lady Heather was chased by the military police and came all the way to Rochepolie. Soon after Heather’s death, her parents were arrested, and it was because they were accused of helping Viscount Darnell, whom we had hidden. What possible reason would there be to silence Glenwell by falsely accusing them? The man who got Heather pregnant is trying to cover everything up. Before her parents find out about her death and her pregnancy.”

He hesitated before responding carefully.

“…Perhaps Darnell got help from Lord Holborn before coming to me. Surely the military police wouldn’t have arrested Count Holborn without any evidence? It’s tragic about Heather, but just because these two events happened one after the other doesn’t mean they’re necessarily connected.”
