Chapter 28.2

Still, Ellin wore an expression of confusion like she didn’t understand.

“If I discuss that with the Marquis about that…”

“Since when did my sister become the sister of the Marquis?”

She nodded in response to Arkan’s sharp words. What harm is there in speaking kindly?

“Here.”

When he held out a box the size of a fist, she looked at it blankly.

“Aren’t you going to take it?”

“No.”

This was an unexpected reaction. At least, he had anticipated that she would accept the box, open it, and say something like, ‘I can’t accept this.’ But…

“There’s no returning back. You lost that precious thing to treat Charlotte.”

“It doesn’t matter since I still have the other one.”

Even as she said this, Ellin marveled at her wit. It was because this provided her with another opportunity to use her abilities once more. However, her answer was also not what Arkan had expected.

“It’s a token of my sincerity.”

“It’s okay. As I mentioned to the Marquis, I received grace at the temple, and I also conveyed that, so it’s settled…”

Even before she could finish her words, he took her hand and forced her to take the box.

“Humility isn’t a virtue. Aren’t you in need of money?”

Ellin’s face flushed red.

“I, I don’t need money. I have no greed.”

The clergy was considered virtuous in their modesty. She had been educated in the same way. It was considered shameful to harbor material desires. Therefore, the priests didn’t openly reveal such desires either.

Later, after learning the cruel truth, she didn’t even have any desire for material things…

“I don’t mind selling.”

Ellin snapped back to reality at that moment.

“Is it because of what happened last time?”

“What?”

“Because I said that, you believed I sold some valuable item to buy clothes…”

“What does this have to do with the incident you were accused of?”

“Yes?”

Her eyes widened. It was only now that she realized that Arkan had mentioned the word ‘accusation’ just before collapsing.

“Your Majesty, do you realize that I have been falsely accused?”

“Yes.”

Arkan made a sullen face.

Ellin fiddled with the box he had handed her for a while.

Wasn’t this person an outsider? So, how did he know that? Was it just mere faith? No, it must be that he found out by spying on her, who knew the secret of the fake saint.

“How did you…”

“Isn’t it obvious? You’re not that kind of person, and if you’re being harassed because you’re a commoner, it’s just a false accusation.”

He spoke as if he was annoyed and was only looking at the box in her hand.

Ellin widened her eyes and looked at him.

“If you don’t want to receive a ‘price’ in return…”

“….”

“I hope you take it as a token of gratitude.”

“….”

“Miss Ellin, allow me to express my gratitude.”

What did she just hear? Arkan was thanking me? The supercilious emperor?

Arkan, who muttered his gratitude, was looking at her.

It was awkward. This general situation was incredibly awkward. Was this the same person who, in the previous life, scoffed at the absurd notion of being a ‘couple’ and gave her disdainful glances every time they met, was now the one saying such things?

Ordinary.

It was unbearable because it was so ordinary.

Ellin struggled to open the box as she swallowed her breath. Inside the box was a pair of peridot earrings, the same color as her eyes.

“It’s nothing special. Just made with cheap peridot.”

Why was this person trying to deceive her? It was even harder to get the workmanship on a small earring.

“You don’t like it?”

She shook her head in response to the quietly asked question. It seemed like he was giving her a new pair of earrings because she wore earrings with divine power. It was a surprisingly thoughtful gift for him.

“Thank you.”

“I’m giving it to you to say thank you. Make sure to remember that.”

“Even so, it’s too much for me.”

Arkan stared at her as if observing her.

‘Is there something else he wanted to say?’

As she thought, she remembered that there was one more thing she had to ask him.

“And about the job, I’m trying to find more, but no one…”

Arkan grumbled, his face furrowing.

‘If you received a gift and were grateful, you should at least smile or at least try it on. What is with this talk about jobs again? Was she haunted by a ghost who died from not being able to work?’

“As for employment… Well, how about being the Princess’s nanny? She seems to be following you.”

“Really?!”

He was rather surprised by her loud voice.

“Thank you, Your Majesty.”

As Ellin smiled brightly, he gazed at that face with a stunned expression.

‘…Unbelievable. Is she smiling because she’s happier about finding a job now than the peridot earring?’

He felt disheartened. This woman was truly strange. Even though he thought she was crazy, it seemed like her personality had gone haywire in a different way. He didn’t think he gave her any indication about her finding work, so why on earth?

His feelings were complicated.

Nevertheless, looking at Ellin, who wore a relieved expression and smiled as if everything was fine, he couldn’t even move.

“When can I start working?”

“Starting tomorrow. I’ll pass the word on.”

What was even crazier was his peculiar attitude, an idiot-like attitude of not killing the woman he was about to kill and bringing her here instead.

…A foolish vow made when he was a foolish child.

It seemed that the oath to keep the person who didn’t avoid his eyes on their first meeting still dominated him.

Well, let’s think about it later.

If he had to, he could just kill her.

That was what Arkan told himself. However, even saying he would kill her, the echo of those words felt hollow.
