The Voiceless Duchess - Chapter 18
Chapter 18
‘Don’t exclude me from my own story.’
Lohengrin’s fingers traced Concerto’s ring on her index finger, hidden beneath her clasped hands.
Had he even noticed this?
She didn’t expect him to. From the moment she entered, the man had been staring intently at her.
It wasn’t a gaze born of base curiosity or desire. It was the eyes of someone observing to confirm what they already knew.
Lohengrin swallowed a sigh.
“Those words…”
The Margrave muttered, his voice thick with anger as he clenched his fists around her arm.
The indifferent purple eyes, as if unsurprised, fueled his anger further.
“Dietrich Gideon, that bastard really…”
“As I said, Lady Lohengrin already know everything.”
The intruder’s voice suddenly interjected. At some point, Carlisle had approached them.
His gaze fell on Lohengrin, who stood behind the Margrave. The Margrave’s expression hardened, not missing this.
“I’ll send her away soon, so wait inside.”
“I haven’t even greeted her yet.”
“Such a thing…”
“I can’t be impolite in our first meeting.”
Lohengrin couldn’t help but scoff at the brazen reply. It reminded her of what happened a few days ago. Seeing her expression, Carlisle’s eyes lit up.
“Don’t you know you’ve already been rude enough? And not just once, but from the North Gate.”
“I had no choice but to do so, since you wouldn’t pay me any attention otherwise.”
The Margrave finally took his hand off Lohengrin and turned around, but still shielding her.
“I appreciate you informing me of the young duke’s deception on my daughter’s behalf. I’ll compensate you generously, so please wait quietly.”
“I’ll decide on that compensation.”
“You dare, you insolent little…”
The Margrave’s face turned red with anger as he shouted.
The Margrave was a giant man, even at his middle age, standing over 2 meters tall. One would be intimidated by the aura emanating from his imposing figure, but Carlisle didn’t even blink.
“I’ll persuade Concerto to add your name to the Sidus register. I’ll also tell Sir Otto to drop the lawsuit for the title, so you should be satisfied with that.”
“It’s too little as I’ve come all this way.”
“You’re an illegitimate child, are you saying the position of Duke of Leimond is small?”
“Margrave Nordvant.”
Carlisle, who had become expressionless in an instant, took a step closer to the Margrave.
“There’s a reason why I’ve come all this way without even daring to go near Nordvantuntil now.”
Lohengrin held her breath without realizing it. Fortunately, Carlisle didn’t seem to notice.
“Didn’t I tell you? I’ve known for years that Sir Dietrich has been raising an illegitimate child, hiding it from Nordvant’s eyes. Why would I tell you now, after knowing it alone all this time?”
Carlisle glanced at Lohengrin over the Margrave’s shoulder. Lohengrin forced herself to meet his gaze without flinching.
He smiled, as if he knew everything.
“Because I’m confident I can get what I want.”
Carlisle’s gaze turned directly to Lohengrin. Her face also showed a flicker of displeasure as she met his eyes.
“You…”
The Margrave’s face hardened.
Carlisle, if nothing else, doesn’t speak empty words. It was difficult to dismiss it as mere boasting.
Carlisle shifted his body to step aside from the Margrave.
“Then let’s go inside. This isn’t a conversation to have at the door.”
“….”
The Margrave stood with his right arm behind his back, looking down at Carlisle as if assessing the situation.
His tightly closed mouth was set, and Lohengrin could see his hand on his back clench into a fist.
“Fine. It seems you have no intention of moving.”
Carlisle shrugged, his face turning cold.
“It seems you’re okay with spreading the word that the Nordvant has been betrayed, right here at this door?”
Carlisle’s calm, golden eyes were fixed on Lohengrin.
She clenched her hands to avoid showing any sign of panic. Fortunately, the Margrave moved to block her from view.
“Ha.”
He turned his head away with an incredulous expression and let out a dry laugh.
