“Mary!”
Luciana stood up from her seat as she saw Mary return, clutching the box tightly after her errand.
“Is this the item? It’s bigger than I expected. It must have been heavy to carry all the way here…”

As Luciana began inspecting the box placed on the table, Mary, who had been standing by with a sullen expression, started grumbling about her experience at Rodwell.
“Milady, I hate to say this, but… something felt really strange about that place.”
“Strange? What do you mean?”
Did something happen during the errand?
Mary rarely complained, as she was generally an upbeat person, so Luciana, noticing her maid’s unhappy expression, asked curiously.
“Well, when I arrived and opened the door, the inside was so dark!”
“Really…? It was daytime, so it must have been dark on purpose, blocking out the light…”
Luciana considered calming down the agitated Mary but decided to let her continue speaking.
“I thought no one was there, so I asked if anyone was around, and suddenly, this man popped out from behind me!”
“No sound at all?”
“Yes! It was like he was trying to scare me on purpose!”

Luciana hadn’t heard anything about this either, so she was just as puzzled.

Luciana widened her eyes in curiosity, and Mary pulled a decorative flower from the vase and pretended to point it at her own neck.

“Not only did he point a blade at me, but he also just said, ‘State your affiliation,’ and kept talking like it was nothing!”
Mary mimicked the mysterious man’s deep voice and stern expression before putting the fake flower back in the vase.
“I was so scared I handed over the handkerchief immediately. Only then did he let me go.”
“What?!”
“As if that wasn’t enough, after handing me the item, he practically pushed me out of the alley like I was some kind of rat he was chasing out of the kitchen!”
Already nervous from running an errand in an unfamiliar place, Mary’s rant continued without pause. Though she might have exaggerated a bit, the story was all true.
“He pointed a blade at you? Are you hurt anywhere? Should I make you a warm cup of tea?”
“Milady…!”
With a concerned expression, Luciana checked Mary’s neck.
Feeling all her frustration melt away, Mary collapsed into Luciana’s arms, relieved by her caring master.
‘Even though she’s two years older than me, because of my past life’s memories, Mary just feels like a little sister to me.’
The hug was a bit tight, and Luciana was slightly short of breath, but thinking about how Mary endured her fear to help her made her feel guilty.
“You went through so much trouble because of me. That must have been terrifying. Are you okay now?”
“I was a bit startled, but… if it’s for you, Milady, it’s nothing!”
“There you go again. You need to take better care of yourself. But thank you for saying that.”
“Hehe.”
Luciana patted Mary a couple of times, relieved to see her perk up so quickly.
“You must be tired from your trip. Why don’t you take a little rest? Even though you say you’re fine, it must have shaken you.”
“But what about tending to you, Milady?”
“I’ll just be locked up in my lab today, so don’t worry. There’s no need for me to dress up, and any simple errands can be handled by the other maids.”
With that, Luciana gently pried the clingy Mary off her and turned towards the door.
“Oh, and don’t worry—I’ll make sure to warn them to be more careful next time, so nothing like this happens again.”
“Milady… You’re always looking out for me… there’s no one like you, Lady Luciana…”
“Now rest, Mary!”
Luciana firmly pushed Mary away as she tried to cling to her again, quickly closing the door behind her.
“There’s no other maid like Mary anywhere.”
Shaking her head with a sigh, Luciana reminded herself of her purpose and hurried over to the box.
“It’s finally here.”
Gulp.
With trembling hands, Luciana brushed over the rough surface of the box.
Inside, there might be a clue to untangle the mess between her and Richt.
