The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 75
Chapter 75
But Maximilian’s reply was even more baffling. Selena’s eyes widened. Was he suggesting they go together to meet the supposed Belle in the Herren district of 17th Street?
Displeased with the idea of his company, Selena voiced her refusal.
“Your Highness, the place I’m going to is dangerous. Please stay safely in the castle.”
“If it’s that dangerous, then I must go with you.”
Maximilian was unmoved. He chuckled, raising an eyebrow as he looked down at Selena.
“You don’t listen to me, so why should I listen to you?”
Selena, her lips sealed shut, pressed her hand to her forehead.
It seemed impossible to dissuade the crown prince.
‘There’s no helping it.’
Resigned to his company, Selena decided to first address Maximilian’s ostentatious attire, which would stand out like a beacon.
“First, please change your clothes like me, Your Highness.”
“Like you? You want me to dress like a beggar?”
“Yes, 17th Street isn’t safe, and many poor people live there. Showing signs of wealth increases the risk of being attacked.”
“Hmph, even if so, it would only be an attack by small fry.”
Maximilian scoffed. Selena sighed silently and replied firmly. “If you don’t want to see an article about the crown prince brawling in a slum, then change your clothes.”
To that, Maximilian couldn’t retort. He looked at Selena, plainly dressed, with a displeased expression, then reluctantly nodded.
He didn’t want rumors spreading about the crown prince frequenting the Herren district of 17th Street.
Selena headed towards the Herren district with Maximilian, disguised as a commoner. Due to the unexpected guest, Randy and Lucy were to remain at the office. Not by choice.
‘Do we need this many people?
‘Leave the stragglers behind.’
Maximilian’s disgruntled stare at the two flanking Selena was the reason. Thus, Selena’s expression was far from pleasant as she journeyed to the Herren district with Maximilian.
She only managed a pleasant facade when the crown prince looked at her. As they entered the Herren district, following the address that had been provided, she worked even harder to maintain her composure.
The quiet and desolate streets of Herren, strewn with garbage and devoid of people, were slightly unnerving.
‘Even if His Highness is a marriage candidate, I can’t let my guard down.’
She diligently consulted the address, searching for Belle’s house. After about thirty minutes of wandering, “When are we going to get there? Do you even know how to read a map?”
“Please wait a moment.” After enduring Maximilian’s irritated complaints with superhuman patience— “Ah, I think it’s over there.”
Selena finally located the house and raised her hand. Her slender, pale finger pointed to a dilapidated wooden house that looked on the verge of collapse.
She had anticipated modest circumstances given Belle’s residence in the Herren district, but the state of the house was worse than she imagined.
‘Is she a commoner bordering on poverty?’
Then, reuniting her with the prince would be a greater burden….
“Kyaaak!”
A sharp scream pierced the air. It came from the dilapidated wooden house. Selena, startled, was about to run towards the house. But Maximilian grabbed her wrist, stopping her.
“Why are you running? What are you going to do?”
“Help her! A woman is screaming.”
“Is that your business? Don’t get involved in something troublesome. Come back another time, or just give up.”
Maximilian tilted his head arrogantly. Selena frowned at his subtle attempt to dissuade her from the task and shook off his hand. Was he joking?
Task or not, it was clear someone was in danger.
“Regardless of the request, I’m going to help. I can’t just ignore someone in danger.”
“What a hero. Do you fancy yourself one?”
Maximilian sneered, his voice laced with malice. Selena looked directly at him and replied.
“Yes, I do. So don’t stop me.”
His sculpted, handsome face contorted. Ignoring him, Selena turned and ran towards the house. Click. Fortunately, the door wasn’t locked.
Selena pushed it open without hesitation. “Hand it over now!”
“No! I won’t let you have this!” The scene inside was chaotic. Furniture was overturned and scattered everywhere.
In the middle of the chaos, three menacing-looking men surrounded a single woman. They seemed to be fighting over something.
The woman clutched something to her chest, her body curled protectively, while one of the men practically had her by the throat.
Then, with Selena’s sudden appearance, all four looked at her with bewildered expressions. “Who are you?”
“Let her go.”
Ignoring the threatening question from one of the men, Selena calmly addressed the one holding the woman. “What?”
“I said, let go of her.”
“Ha, who are you? Who are you to barge in here and order us around…?”
“Three men against one woman. Aren’t you ashamed?”
Selena’s gaze swept over the men, filled with disdain. Their faces contorted, flushing red with anger.
