The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 10
Chapter 10
“Yes, Your Highness, I am Selena Irving, the daughter of Marquess Irving.”
“And you’re the boss of some… salad or something, right?”
“…Yes, Your Highness. It’s called ‘Serenade’.”
She bit her lower lip lightly. Could the Crown Prince simply change the name of someone else’s business? She wanted to argue, but as their gazes met, she quickly averted her eyes. Right, he’s the Crown Prince, so it was fine. Yes, yes.
“They say that if someone’s willing, you don’t discriminate against their gender and use them to make money.”
“Ah, yes…”
“I’ll be straightforward. Cancel the request from the Princess today.”
…Excuse me? Selena’s eyes widened as she stared at the Crown Prince. Maximilian, radiant under the sunlight, appeared even more captivating up close. Wow, he’s crazy, but his looks are extraordinary.
“Can’t you understand my words properly? Do I have to say it twice?”
Ah, his temperament was difficult too.
“…No, I don’t understand why you suddenly want to cancel it.”
“If I say so, then it will happen; what’s with all the talk?” Maximilian’s temperament was truly difficult. Selena forcefully suppressed her frustration and wore a forced smile.
Observing the arrogant demeanor of this spoiled prince, she felt more annoyed than scared.
“Unless you’re the person in question, canceling the request is impossible.”
“Even if I’m that person’s older brother?”
“Did the Princess ask you to cancel it, Your Highness?”
“No,” Maximilian answered, as if it were obvious.
What nonsense was this?
Observing Selena’s bewildered expression, he raised an eyebrow and tilted his head. “As the Crown Prince, I could intervene in the Princess’s affairs.”
“Do you think it’s a waste of money? I’ll pay you five times the amount of the request. So cancel it.”
Selena, who had transformed from a lovesick person into someone obsessed with money in her mind, defiantly lifted her chin.
Lucy said she doesn’t care about her sibling’s love life. Consequently, the prince should have no say in the matter!
Selena, feeling wronged, momentarily blamed her maid inwardly but quickly corrected herself. Rather, seeing the prince in person, it seemed like he was simply a strange person.
“Why aren’t you replying? Are you ignoring me?”
“No, I’m thinking.”
“Thinking? Do you think I’m making a request to you?” Maximilian laughed derisively and rose from his seat. Then, with swift movements barely perceptible to the eye, he drew a dagger from his waist. The icy blade grazed Selena’s neck.
“If you wish, I can give you a choice.”
“….”
“Choose. Will you die here or refuse the request?”
He was one of the candidates to be her husband—he probably doesn’t even remember. Selena, lost in thought and unable to circumvent this impasse, met the armed nobleman head on.
“I refuse.”
“Finally, you comprehend my words.”
When Selena promptly voiced her decision, unwilling to meet her end in this place, Maximilian withdrew the dagger with a contented smile. This man was utterly mad.
‘I’m sorry, Your Highness. I promised to fulfill your love…’
Selena mentally apologized to Gabriella before departing, but before she left, she made one final request to the prince.
“Your Highness, please explain the situation to the princess.”
“What situation?”
“The reason why I refused her request—the unpleasant incident where you put a knife against my neck and issued threats—is precisely what happened here.” Maximilian stared at Selena, who was trying her best to appear innocent, shrugged his shoulders, and retorted, “Why should I? You’re the one who should speak to her.”
“…Pardon?”
“Don’t mention me when you refuse. Just say you changed your mind.”
What nonsense are you talking about, Your Highness?
If she were to comply, what would become of her image, reputation, and standing? Selena looked at the prince with a bewildered expression.
“If I simply refuse the request, the princess will not view it favorably.”
“That is precisely why I offered a sum of money.”
“….”
“And besides, aren’t you considered an outsider in high society? It should hold no consequence, even if the Princess was disappointed in you.”
“You…!”
…You bastard. Selena barely held back the torrent of curses that threatened to escape her lips, directed at the prince, who continued his blabbering. Even though she had distanced herself from social activities, wasn’t this too much? She really wanted to sincerely ask if he had any conscience.
“Bastard?”
As the prince raised an eyebrow and asked, his intimidating face made me question such doubts.
“…In this resplendent spring when the azaleas bloom, self-improvement is the best. I recommend focusing on one’s personal growth rather than meddling in the princess’s affairs!”
With a snappy response, Maximilian’s handsome eyebrows returned to their place. He raised his large hand and waved it dismissively.
“Now that we’re done talking, go.”
“….”
“Do I have to tell you to get lost?”
“No, I will go. Please take care of your health, Your Highness.”
She hoped he would contract a contagious disease. Suppressing her words, Selena promptly rose and departed. She wanted to part ways with the prince not a second sooner. Read ahead here.
