The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
[I think that you’re a wonderful person, but it seems that we are not meant to be. I apologize. I hope you find someone better.]
Selena’s hand trembled as she held the rejection letter. It was the fifteenth one she had received so far. Its contents were no different from the previous fourteen, all filled with clichéd phrases. Selena let out a frustrated sigh as she crumpled the letter and slammed her fist on the desk.
“This is just ridiculous!”
“Boss, please calm down…”
“Listen to me, Randy. I really felt a connection this time! We had a mutual understanding!”
Randy, who was trying to calm down the distraught Selena, didn’t know how to handle the situation. How could he pacify his boss, who was previously gushing about her date and glowing with excitement?
Randy wiped his sweaty forehead and sent a desperate look towards Lucy, who was sitting on the couch reading the newspaper leisurely. How could he prevent his boss from going on a rampage after a blind date gone wrong?
Lucy, without looking up from the newspaper, nonchalantly opened her mouth, “Well, lady, maybe you were the only one feeling that connection.”
“Lucy!”
“Was I too straightforward? Let me correct myself. Maybe the feeling wasn’t mutual, Boss.”
Selena’s expression was a blend of sadness and frustration upon hearing her. Lucy knew her situation better than anyone else, so how could she say that? With resentful eyes, Selena looked at Lucy.
Unable to overcome Selena’s accusing gaze, Lucy put down the newspaper and approached Selena.
“Lady, do you know why you’ve been rejected fifteen times in a row?”
“Why…?”
Selena raised her slightly moistened green eyes to look at Lucy. Born into a wealthy family, possessing a beautiful appearance and top-notch abilities—what did she lack in her that resulted in her being rejected fifteen times on blind dates?
Lucy, Selena’s maid and the assistant manager of the matchmaking company ‘Serenade’, opened her mouth slowly.
“The answer is obvious, lady.”
“What…?”
“You already know the answer.”
“No, what do you mean by that?”
Frustrated and agitated, Selena looked at Lucy, who turned and walked towards the door. Just then, someone knocked on the door. As Lucy reached for the doorknob, she glanced back at Selena.
“And now the answers are coming here.”
“No, what answers?”
Selena’s perplexed voice went either unheard or ignored as Lucy turned the doorknob.
Just in time, it seemed that someone had arrived.
“Your future husband is already among them anyway.”
Simultaneously, the door swung wide open. Seeing the grand entrances of the three men, Selena froze in place. No, were these people here together for… her?
Perplexed and bewildered, she realized that it was just her. Lucy and even Randy seemed unsurprised by their arrival. The three men who walked into the office also appeared entirely unfazed.
“Hmm, did you change the sofa? It seems better than before.”
“It’s been a while since I visited this office.”
“Excuse us for a moment.”
The three men who casually settled onto the sofa acted as if they were expected visitors. Without a word, they had barged in together, leaving Selena completely befuddled. Too bewildered to even respond to Lucy’s words, Selena abruptly stood up from her chair. Noel Ratliffe, the Duke of Ratliffe, occupied the left side of the sofa. The Tower Lord Raymond, took the right. In the center, there was Maximilian, the Crown Prince. As she glanced at them one by one, Selena asked in a bewildered voice.
“Why are the three of you here together, holding hands?”
“What nonsense! We’re not holding hands. Where are you getting these bizarre ideas?”
Maximilian’s face showed clear displeasure at Selena’s words, expressing that they weren’t close enough to be holding hands like close friends.
“That’s right, lady. We’re here coincidentally, not as friends.”
Noel grinned playfully, while Raymond maintained his expressionless facade. Well, they were three men for whom the label of ‘friends’ would never quite fit.
Selena, with her arms crossed, nodded slightly as she approached the three men, turning her chair to face them. “Ah, I see. So that’s how it is. Then what brings each of you here?”
“We came because we have something to discuss, lady.”
“Me too.”
“I have something to say as well.”
Noel’s gentle voice took the lead, followed by the crisp tone of the prince, and lastly, the low voice of the Tower Lord. The three men spoke in unison.
Selena’s expression was one of utter confusion. What could these three possibly have to say to her? Their simultaneous visit, as well as the fact that they all had something to say, was quite unusual. Seeing her baffled expression, Maximilian was the first to break the silence.
“I heard you’re currently looking for a marriage partner.”
Nod.
“But it’s not easy finding one, isn’t it, lady?”
Nod, nod.
“You don’t need to bother searching separately, Selena.”
Nod, nod, nod…
“…?”
Selena, almost involuntarily nodding three times, suddenly stopped. She couldn’t help but pause. For someone like her, who was actively seeking a partner and even resorting to matchmaking, the idea of not needing to search separately was strange. So she should counter the Tower Lord’s statement immediately…
‘What’s with this ominous feeling?’
Why did the presence of these three men, showing up together, feel not only strange, but oddly familiar? As Selena was captured in this strange unease, Maximilian suddenly stood up.
“Allow me to speak first.”
Noel and Raymond nodded in agreement. Maximilian reached inside his jacket and took out a small, square case.
