Chapter 71

When Grafton removed his silver mask, the delicate features of a beautiful young man were revealed. As he then took off his wig, a cascade of fine, pink hair tumbled free.

“Haah…”

Grafton ran a hand through his silken locks and sighed again.

“No matter how many times I do this, it’s nerve-wracking.”

Grafton was Diabolus’s closest confidant, tasked with impersonating him and acting as his proxy in the leader’s absence.

As an adolescent omega, Grafton was similar in build to Arlenrose, making them nearly indistinguishable when Grafton wore a mask and coat. He’d often filled in before, but Diabolus’s prolonged absence over the past two years had made the role almost exclusively his.

Diabolus had trained him rigorously for this task. In fact, Grafton wasn’t the only revolutionary trained to impersonate Diabolus in this manner. There were a few others.

“You’re doing just fine. You even look confident.”

Grafton glared at his twin brother, Isphton, who was lounging on the opposite bed, grinning.

“You do it next time.”

“No way. You’re better at it. Why should I bother?”

“Diabolus said…”

“Oh, that? ‘Any one of us should be able to become Diabolus.’”

Isphton’s voice, mimicking Diabolus, instantly deepened, becoming low and husky.

It was a phrase their leader, Diabolus, often repeated.

Demonas must remain unaware of Diabolus’s absence. This holds true even if that absence is due to Diabolus’s death. Even without Diabolus, the Demonas must continue to function seamlessly. For that to happen, any one of them should be able to become Diabolus.

“That’s why I hate it even more. Who could possibly replace him? It’s absurd.”

“What are you talking about? Do you think I enjoy this? I’m only doing it because he said so.”

Grafton’s voice rose. He, too, lacked the confidence to replace Diabolus. He was merely following orders.

“So, next time, you have to do it.”

At Grafton’s sharp retort, Isphton sighed and buried his face in a pillow.

“Haa… Does it really have to be me…?”

“You were better than me during training. Why are you acting like this?”

“I was just trying hard because I liked being praised by him.”

“If you try hard now, he’ll praise you again.”

“I’m not good under pressure…”

“You’ll get used to it.”

“Haa…”

Isphton sighed deeply once more.

“I can’t even imagine a situation where we have to replace him. Why does he keep preparing us for that?”

“I hate to imagine that future too. But unless he’s a god, it’s a future that will come someday.”

“I know that. But the future he’s preparing for seems closer, almost preordained.”

“Ah, I see what you mean.”

Grafton nodded. Their leader sometimes acted as if his death were already a certainty. Being the leader of a revolutionary group was certainly dangerous…

“I wish he’d be more careful.”

“I agree.”

Diabolus’s actions often suggested more than a willingness to die for the revolution. He seemed to hold his own life lightly. Whenever they witnessed this, it sent a chill down their spines.

“I wonder if he’s alright at the Fleurose Palace…”

Grafton’s face darkened as he murmured these words.

It had been two years since Diabolus and Violet had gone to the Fleurose Palace. Even Grafton and Isphton, close enough to know Diabolus’s true face, were unaware of her identity as the Fleurose princess, which only fueled their worry.

Officially, there were two reasons for Diabolus and Violet’s infiltration of the palace.

One: to infiltrate the Fleurose royal family, extending the revolutionaries’ reach.

Two: to uncover a hidden truth.

According to their research, alphas and omegas once coexisted as equals. This balance lasted for a considerable time before shifting at some point. Arlenrose also questioned how alphas and omegas could have been equal in the past.

Alphas dominated omegas because their pheromones overwhelmed them. No matter how much an omega resisted, they would succumb to an alpha’s pheromones, making equality impossible.
